I've got an issue I took a long time to figure out on my old island... the location of the shops 😂 my entrance is kind of finished as well as my resident services plaza area.

I just did long rows of 2 squares, make sure once u get the color you want to separate it from others of it's breed- then clone from there

I also found it helpful to put dirt paths under where I put flowers for breeding- makes it easy to tell which flowers are the originals and which are bred even days later.

Yeah! That’s kinda what I’ve done, I had roads everywhere and I hated them and now I have a much more natural themed island and I think they’re all so pretty!

I just want to have roads on the main area on the island (entrance, plaza and shops) and the rest will be mountains and forests with dirt trails and maybe The Path haha. The only thing that's really difficult to make the roads go kinda natural and not flat so it looks good on the map... 😅

Yes, go for it! I think it’s quite nice to have roads a bit more winding and maybe leading to lil petrol stations and paths or maybe a wee roundabout with a fountain in it!

Depends on which aesthetic you like there are people who block off the plaza with some cliffs to make it look not so close. Or you can expand the plaza like I did (scroll up for pics) and make a main area with fountain @timber pumice

@mossy kernel I would just work on getting three stars and actually decorate after because you might want to add cliffs to your entrance or change it a bit! When I got my new switch I just threw decorations down and followed whatever Isabelle said to get to three stars so I can do as I please

Perhaps add variation to the path your using, The Path is really great for diagonal and winding paths but when its a straight line like what you have it isnt at its full potential

@mossy kernel yeah thats great! theres not really much you can do after youve built the path, i usually put the path down before decorating around it so i can make the path look as natural as possible

I have lots of natural twists and turns on my island but the paths are kinda ugly cause you can’t smooth them out etc like you can with the custom designs. Only reason I haven’t switched to custom only is because I like the 3D depth the mud/dirt paths have and I like how they get wet when it rains

Like if I pan up while looking at a dirt path it has 3D texture to it that’s different than the grass. Custom designs don’t have that which I get why but it’s not as much fun

They are very flat which I totally understand, but I’d be happy with them just taking textures from what’s below them, so if I put a path on sand it takes the sound of the sand, and the texture of the sand if I have see through spots in my design

@red folio I think it does do that? Like I know you can place paths on top of the paths you can buy with nook points and I think it takes over the sound and it’ll fill in the spots of what’s below. Like for instance the custom design that has borders

@quaint oak if you're talking about in game path borders, they are custom codes you can get inside able's portal. You need an Nintendo online acc~ here's one creator code for borders, if you want others you can ask in #custom-design-help🎨

flower breeding (understanding it and getting all phenotypes, and if youre really bored-genotypes)

filling out your catalogue
you can also reset your island if you wanna design islands again

@inner cedar omg same!! That’s one of my favorite designs. I think one thing I do hate is that paths have a separation when placed next to each other. Like that annoying gap but other than that I love it.

It's not they published an unfinished game even if it may feel like it. They're doing updates with new features when they know the community wants these. And if you got everything at once it would be very boring sometime because there's nothing new. I'd like it that way better to have constant new changes that keeps me motivated.

I like having things to work towards, it’s not wholly that right now I haven’t anything to do, but I haven’t things to work towards. I like knowing that there are things that I can unlock in the future, I like having that kind of motivation to play. I didn’t find New Leaf boring, I found it enticing because I knew that there was new unlocks and exciting things ahead.

@vernal oxide I don’t think the updates are inherently bad, but I don’t think that they’re all that they’re cracked up to be. These features would have been better from the start, as they were in previous games.

@spring apex many people who do city themed (including me) make the island pretty flat unless they want to add in cliffs for the purpose of stavcking panels or stalls to make extra buildings, or to have their other buildings elevated~ a tip to start out tho, I would start with the entrance and continue to build from there! I personally added a natural area in the back of my island because I wanted to terraform more natural cliffs and rivers 
but rn I'm tearing my island to make it medieval themed but my da is still in the city~ here is my map if you need any inspo

@craggy pollen I would maybe recommend extending the cliff a little bit more out or just keep the cliff there and maybe add some garden benches and lamps to make it seem like it’s an ordinary path in the map if that makes sense

@spring apex I think for me personally I kind of went with the flow and worked in small areas at a time. When I wanted to place a villager house somewhere I would mark out a 4x4 dirt path and see if I would like it in that spot and sometimes decorate to see if it fits well!

But I lost so much time on planning my island on Happy Island Designer I didnt really enjoy the gameplay anymore. Now I play after work and I just build where I think it would fit right. And until now it kind of works.
Somehow I feel like I can't really play when the island isn't finished or doesn't look good. My villagers are getting ignored again 😔

@mossy kernel Hard to tell. Just put them around where you feel like it would look good. If it doesn't, change it. That's the way I decorate 😅 But I would put one or two trees in the gap of the fences so it blocks them off a bit.
And maybe some bushes in front of the fences in the front.

Okay so I figured something out and idk if im late to it and that loads of people already know but this might be helpful for those who dont know. You can get the paths under the bridge. Mind you this doesnt allow custom paths under the bridge.
You put a base of a normal path down and then put a custom path ontop like I’ve done. And then you place the bridge ontop as you want. This gets rid of the top layer which is the custom path and you are left with the normal path underneath!

I removed an old bridge created a new waterfall to add more fluidness to the map filled in some river portions added a new bridge above to cross the new waterfall, fixed the incline leading up, then decided on a library theme since it's the only thing I haven't added to my island yet in total it took around 10-12 hours maybe 15 but I lost track and started yesterday

@tardy pebble I think it depends on what theme you're going for too. That was my problem too, how to design or what to build around my resident services. But I ended up and happy for it to end up like this.

@rich ivy yea I think my issue is my water me garden below my resident service that is that square outline slightly to the right of my airport, think I’m gonna knock that down and lead up to the front view of my resident service area

@jade laurel you can consider making the entrance to the town hall to its right, so that the area in front of the town hall can be completely dedicated to the shops
But tbh 50k is not that hard to come by. Just sell some fish and bugs and fossils
