@oblique reef It's literally limited only by space occupied. the game will draw 8x8 squares wherever you have furniture. It does its best to be generous about the way it draws the squares. If more than 43 of the 64 squares are occupied, then it counts your island as cluttered.

Scroll up a little and you’ll see some cool examples but basically having two south-mouths is carte-blanche to make things like central islands, I’ve even seen mock-archipelagos if you’re feeling adventurous. Theme is gonna be a real important one here - I’m guessing beaches are relevant to you since you mentioned how smol they are.

I covered a 5x9 space stem to stern with items, it didn't count the island as "cluttered" until it couldn't draw an 8x8 without counting too many occupied spaces. Paths, buildings, fencing, and trees DON'T count against you. It's just furniture.
