looking at your map it seems like you're trying to go for a more natural look. if so then yes round out the edges and make it more smooth. if you're trying to go for a more planned "city" look then i would actually do the opposite and straighten the edges out @stark creek

I've just basically just started getting around to designing my island and I'm at a bit of a loss, my resident services is in a pretty annoying place, pretty close to the airport, and if I factor in 2 tile pathways, squeezing in things to fill in the space between those pathways gets difficult.
can anyone offer pointers? here's my map. pretend the currently terraformed parts (mainly around the resident services area) aren't there. I'm willing to fill in and tear down spaces if it's best that I do so

I actually lucked out and got a fantastic starter map! My map is at least 95% starter. Only changes I've made were relocating a pond, and making tiny changes to rivers so that bridges can fit.

@cedar abyss For me, getting 5-stars happened so suddenly that I didn't even realize I had the rating until I found a lily of the valley on a cliff one morning. At the time, I didn't realize you had to manually ask for a rating, I think I assumed she'd announce it. Anyway, I think what worked for me was putting flowers all over the place (most of my walkways are bordered by them) as well as importing at least 30-40 trees from the mystery isles. Having 10 villagers I feel is a must, as well as putting furniture everywhere. I also instantly put pathways all over the place as soon as I got the tool, so I can't help but feel like that contributed. Overall, my island is so incredibly dense with things whether it be trees, flowers, pathways, furniture, etc. I think covering as much space as you can, and not leaving empty areas is the key to getting 5-stars pretty efficiently.

How do people with 2 south rivers utilise the small strips of land on each side?
I'm tempted to restart but i'm still conflicted.
Also, does anyone have a 4-5 star rated town with 2 south rivers I could check out?

so what i did was make a curvy river on my left side, so it goes inwards to the right side the curves back around so i have a foresty part. Haven't decided what to do with the right side, perhaps another twisty river or a mini boardwalk

its nice if you want a symmetrical town, which is what I originally wanted to do. I still want a decently centered town (around resident services) so i think they're fine

@gritty lantern I used to be annoyed by them, but then I got the terraforming tool and just made sections smaller / reformatted the way the river looks altogether. The two south river outlets are more like waterfall outlets now.

I will admit, two south rivers is probably unideal unless you have a specific plan for it, but the reason I picked this map is mainly because of the placement of the Residential Services building and the airport.

yeah resident services placement is quite nice, the offset from the airport isn't a big deal because I just have my tree orchard in front

so essentially the bottom part my map is more nature and the top is neighborhood, though i think im changing it up a bit rn

made a little japanese theater. it was harder to capture eveything but on the cliffs there's higher level seats that make it all look pretty cool. i was trying to go for like a japanese love story LOL

@chrome prairie I prefer villager houses between a cliff and horizontal river - it just looks so neat.
I was thinking of having 1 residential area but then my town had too many empty chunks of land. Having buildings/houses scattered makes you play across the whole space rather than being confined.

At least you aren’t me. at first I put all my villagers as close to possible to the town hall so I could have the rest of my island then I got terraforming. I ended up doing a cliff for my two pigs and Rex to live as neighbors. 🥴🥴🥴 all the headaches and I suck at terraforming @chrome prairie
