If I'm being honest, this looks as cool as it can be, absolutely love the idea, but from experience I'll tell you that it will be a pain to decorate and move around
(I also made an island in the past where I terraformed by looking only at the map, not very friendly to navigate)

How should I connect my flower shop to my rock garden? I’m at a loss

Start with a pathway you like to connect the two areas. Then fill around the rock garden leaving the pathway more open to make a smooth transition.

I started with a theme, then I started collecting recipes, which is where I'm at now, then I gathered a bunch of designs on YouTube and I'm going to go through them, take some ideas from there then once I have some ideas I like, I'm gonna start with my placement of things. Second of all you can look up ideas on Pinterest, tiktok ,Youtube and there are also guides for how to unlock terraforming for example or how to get specific items, there are even islands that let u pick up stuff for decoration they are called treasure islands u can look them up on tiktok. Sort of flipped, but my plaza is similarly distant. It just means the plaza isn't part of the entrance, lol. I have a river and a bridge, which opens up with a paved area with a fountain, lights, trees, hedges, etc. Eventually a path leads to the plaza.

Pinterest has some great ideas! I completely redid my island layout not too long ago, and just a warning it takes a LONG time when you are moving all the buildings lol. I recommend time travelling if you plan to do that since you can only move one building each day

Yeah I completely flattened my island and started from scratch! It took a bit of time but now I’m starting from the front and working back. I found that working along a path really helps.

I have a dilemma.

I want to seriously give making a themed island a try. The problem is I can never seem to get anywhere with it and the prospect of doing it gets so big and nebulous that I give up before I even get started. Can I get some tips on how to compartmentalize the process so it doesn’t feel so daunting? It doesn’t help that the theme I want to try is Lovecraft inspired, hardly a very easy thing to do. I just feel lost and discouraged and I don’t know what to do or how best to even begin… any and all feedback is very much appreciated!

i’m going through the exact thing, so i’ve decided just to start off with housing, where everything is and not changing much in terrain (play around with default paths, cliffs, ponds and waterfalls) instead building around it. then i’ll get into coloring paths and flowering alongside them and decorative pieces maybe then i’ll see if there’s much to go from there with coloring

I’m currently working out which villagers I want to have. As it’s a lovecraft theme I think I’ll go for like a fishing town vibe overall, sort of a nod to innsmouth. I know the museum will be a highlight and that I wanna make the docks a big feature, and maybe do like an off-putting graveyard and if I can manage it something akin to a church or cathedral, but I recognize that last one’s a stretch.

A little late to the convo, but as someone who gave a city/town theme with plenty of natural elements a try, I found that planning out general map design (like big terrain shapes, villager placements, nooks, ables, etc.) was super helpful to keep things small and pleasing to eye (like a flowing c-ish shape is my level 2). For example, I decided Nooks should be near the front as a non-negotiable and I wanted my house to be close to water. It helped me generally plan out where I wanted things certain attractions, like a little farm, a fake building strip, a parking lot, inclined, etc. based on the general terrain plan I set. This was all put on a piece of paper for me to refer to as a general guideline so I could. I did start with my entrance since it helped me set the mood of the island and then I could connect pieces as I went. Made things less stressful since I was always just adding to what I already had rather than trying to connect some far away design. Anyway hope this helps!

I already designed my island adding so much to the point it started glitching and I absolutely hated it, I don’t think I’m the kind of person to enjoy a overly crowded organized island

Oh yeah for sure. I had to deal with glitching so I ended up reworking/keeping it in mind since city themes glitch bad. I was able to space things out so it only lags a tiny bit on super sunny days if not in handheld mode but not enough to bother me in gameplay. I'm not 100% done but I'm in no rush. I love trash piles/item layering so I try to do it strategically so it feels full without it killing my game

This is a super interesting conversation, and it's something I'm currently struggling with as well. My island is divided in half, with the front half being a small town that is developing into a more suburban area, and the back half is still forestcore. In the middle, I'm trying to blend the two as if both halves are at a standstill. But it got to a point where the front of my island was lagging and the back of my island was empty

I started by having a vague plan for my island on paper, just putting down where I wanted the main areas to go, and I did end up flattening my island because it did not at all match the default shape. I'm not even haply with my river mouths. But I've had this island since 2020 and I'm not restarting lol.

And it's sort of helped me to have a three step process? To put down the majority of what I want in an area, and then go back through and clean it up, and then the last step is to refine it and make it fit in with the other builds around it so it all looks cohesive. I'd say my island is about 75% done at this point, using this process 👍

ooh ! ive made a couple of japanese inspired spots on a past island, i recommend making a hot springs area, a dining area / street food stall ( or maybe even a specific larger area or plaza dedicated to food stalls and dining would look cute too ), some secret alleys with urban decor and vending machines, and maybe a garden to walk through as well ? it depends on what kind of era of japan youre going for ( i.e. historically accurate heian-era, or 1800s edo-period, or current modern reiwa-era japan ) but those are my ideas if you dont mind the suggestions ^^

I feel you, I struggle with it quite a lot too. What I do is add lore to my island, realistically a real life town won’t be 100% coherent, some parts will feel more new than others. For example my island is hosting a music festival, but some strange things are happening and tourists might make weird discoveries : this allows a global theme (music festival) with different areas : normal music festival, witchy area, horror area, etc. But because it’s also a town, I like to include other builds like a forest, library, café etc.

Maple is my second island, started in 2022 on my 2nd switch, still under construction now.

I think the evergreen ash looks cool because it kind of matches the tiles outside of the house, but you’re right the trees complement the fencing really well 😭

if you do the evergreen ash and dont like the fencing you could always try a different fencing 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ve seen a lot of cottagecore islands with really cute camping/ picnic areas with custom picnic blankets that I thought were cool. I have a friend who has kind of cottagecore vibes that made a really cute farm area too!

I used purple hyacinths for a little lavender patch/farm. And u can use a custom pattern of lavender and put it on a sign to place by the farm! mine turned out super cute

If the rock isn't spawning anywhere on the island, then that means the spot you are trying to put it in is invalid. Perhaps the shirt in the bottom left is too close? I'm not sure about custom designs on the ground, but that's probably fine assuming you don't have a transparent design where the rock is supposed to be

Also in case it matters to you, if you don't like the rock shape then you can break them so a different one re-spawns. Best time to do it before you clean up. I did that for my rock circle so the rock types alternated.
