The star makes the bell blend in quite well if that's what you want; if you want it to stand out as a centrepiece, definitely use those candles! It looks like some kind of offering place with those.

I can definitely see why folks would recommend the star because it matches the stars around it, but in my opinion you don't want it to match too much - otherwise it doesn't seem significant, just part of the landscape around. The candles give it a "this is important" label and make it feel more like a landmark, which is what it deserves in a lovely scene like that!

Build up a cliff on the peninsula and put a lighthouse on there on the edge with some while Hyancinths around it.

Have the area on the left-hand side be a wedding-on-the-beach with tables/chairs (wedding furniture)

Hi all - I have a question about what you all do with your Gyroids… I almost have a full collection (missing 3) but I have about 100 of them all in a ‘field’ on my island. I want to collect each one for my item catalog, but I don’t want to keep them all (especially not color variations). Each villager already has one in their house and in their yard.

You can give them away to people online or you could sell them at the Nook's Cranny. It's really a matter of what you're comfortable with.

you can make makeshift stores to fill in the spaces at the bottom right, like a cafe, convenience store or gas station! and if you have any room next to the museum, create a small library :3

with the villager houses, including your home, you can have them aligned horizontally and leave some room at the front to make little gardens/patios for them

Welp I think I am finally starting to see some progress on my island here. Got a basic entrance going on with a waterfall. I think it looks pretty neat so far.

There is not a hard set dimension, normally you start in one point and decide at what distance is going to be your looking point, then you start terraforming, going back to your looking point, and adjust accordingly

You may need more height, more distance, more obstacles around, like trees or cliffs, and once you are happy how it looks from the designated vantage point the rest is just decorating around and depending on the vista, making it impassable

Assuming you've unlocked water terraforming, just dig a hole and expand it like you would if you were fabricating a river. Then just keep cutting away at the ground until you have your desired lake size.

As far as the shape is concerned, I mostly winged it. I think what makes it look natural is how it is incorporated into the surroundings. Such as terrain elevation and waterfalls pouring into the lake. I also included a river running into my lake.

This is the lake from my island and it does take up a lot of room, about a quarter or a bit more in total. And it's extremely time consuming as others have said, basically the only bit of my island I didn't enjoy putting together as it was very very tedious... but the outcome on big projects like those is worth it.

start with 6 and keep returning to the vista to check if it rolls over the horizon in a way you like. that way you can add islands more easily by just not tunneling them out, and it will save you time overall as you'll only be adding water and not covering it back up (speaking from experience there lol)

oh i thought you meant vertically - width is entirely about the view from your vista. Again start with a low number and expand until the view covers your vista from all angles, but doesn't intrude on the rest of your island.

Just move villager houses to anywhere there is space. If you have an unterraformed area covered in weeds you can use them to clear some of the overgrowth by just plonking them right down in the middle of the weed patch.

Weeds, trees, flowers etc get moved to the refuse box in resident services, so you don't even lose them

Just flatten the area that you want to turn into a lake, then start water terraforming. Like what @fiery tendon said, flattening your entire island could discourage you from finishing it.

i have a resident services that is super close to my airport and i dont really like it, but i dont want to restart. what are some ways to hide it from immediate view? i am going for a tokyo inspired area here.

You could have the path meander to the right, for example, before returning to the resident's services. That way, you can fake distance from your airport.

Of course, you would have to place some kind of obstruction to block the view of RS from the airport. Given your theme, I'd recommend the fence item.

See for me I embraced having mine close and in both iterations of my island I've just kinda let it be seen. But definitely pathing/purposely put items to funnel yourself one way helps. For reference on my very first island design I made my small area an outdoor airport lounge/airport gate

Flattening your entire island definitely can cause burnout. When I flattened mine and covered it in sand I really struggled to get back into it for a while. Instead I would imagine what it is you exactly you want and flatten only that space. I had someone help me design a bell bag oasis lake and it turned out huge but I adore it. Sometimes just going for it really helps!

I would use the large magazine rack. You could even layer fencing or partition walls behind it to reinforce the idea of it being indoors.

You could use the vertical-board fence or the iron fence, intermittently broken up with hedge fencing. You could make a more utilitarian entrance with boxes and luggage surrounding a break in the fences. Equally, you could design a classic airport entrance with a road nearby for guests to be picked up by taxis. Just go for whatever you feel would fit your island theme best.

I’ve had my island since launch, and over the years one of my favorite things to do was decorate according to the seasons. This year however it’s starting to seem less and less worth decorating as less people are playing. So after finishing up my island last summer, I’m starting to think my time might be coming to a close. I’ll still come on from time to time, but I doubt I’ll redecorate again. It takes some messing around, but I had to terraform a couple temporary blocks of cliffside beside the 2x4 cliff. After using the ladder to climb on to the temporary cliffs, you can place all the storefronts on top of the 2x4 cliff.

unfortunately you aren't able to put items in rivers or ponds or the sea unless it's a modded switch but what you could do is create the illusion of one which I've seen people do with custom designs on their island

They're not mangrove as things in the water, but second image is what I was talking about, creating an illusion with the wheat fields so that they cover the area, or with the first image, creating levels and then you could put a river water custom design at the bottom creating that mangrove illusion

You could embrace the short distance to the beach and design the areas in front of the villager homes in a sort of LA beachside house style. Such as a boardwalk with lampposts and benches. You could add trash bags for an extra level of detail. Just go for whatever fits your island theme best, and of course you could just move the house XD

Craft a portable storage shed and carry it in your inventory. Just place the item and you can retrieve any furniture you have in your storage without having to run back to your house. You can also place items in your storage the same way. If you don't have the DIY recipe to craft a storage shed, you can redeem one from the ABD.

it can look a bit off if not utilized well
another thing you can do is add a bit variation; if you somewhat randomly add water on the sides of the cliff it can actually have a very nice effect

Custom designs help more then you would think. What's underneath your items is just as important if not more important then the items themselves. Also, trees can help fill out the area, especially in the vertical direction.

You should try find a border pattern or half square so they align down the side! And add a cute lil food stand/food cart and cafe tables with umbrellas, and add seats. And I would also put some potted plants
