Hhp allows you to decorate your villagers exteriors and interiors, makes it far easier to get items because later on you'll be able to order purchasable items from an NPC if you have unlocked them in hhp, let's you use pillars and partitions in your home, and let's you decorate homes in the dlc of course

It also makes it much easier to get vines and glowing moss and their recipes

You can design a house for each villager in the game, and all of the npcs (if you have their amiibo). You can infinitely redesign their homes though if you did manage to make a house for every villager

You can also make a hospital, restaurant, Cafe, clothing shop, and a school

Though the requirements for those buildings are very minimal, so you could make them into almost anything else too
