flattening is a method that a lot of people do. It's where you essentially get rid of everything and with the terraforming tool you flatten down the island (no cliffs etc). And move all buildings to the beach/sides.

There were some tests made by I think it was Stoney (or BigfootMG?), where it was more or less determined by shape and proportions... But a good way to test is to use your fishing rod: if the bobber moves in water, it's a river, otherwise it's a pond

Don’t know if it’s been answered but you can either ignore them and wait for them to get a white cloud over their head signaling that they want to move. Note that this can take about 2 weeks. Also, you can go to different islands to find different villagers
