Someone told me that I can just buy one and redeem an animal ingame

But there are NPC cards and others..

You can start using amiibo cards to invite villagers to your island once you have at least 6 villagers on your island. In order to have one more in you need to use it on three separate days in the game and fulfill their requests.

The NPC cards can be used with the DLC Happy Home Paradise or to invite an NPC to the coffee shop once you unlock it.

You can also just use them at Harvs if you want to play around and order their posters.
