I replaced the O2 sensor, CEL went away, did brake pads and rotors, full fluid flush, got an 07 WRX exhaust on Marketplace for $100 and slapped it on, threw on $600 Raceland Ultimo coilovers, got a free Impreza hood with no scratched and got it color matched, got the fender matched San Remo Red too. Did a decent DIY job on the rusty rear fenders..

Then finally got it road-worthy and looking decent in just a few months (added some Hella lights lol)
Then I decided to do pull the motor and replace the clutch, flywheel and motor mounts/pitch stop.
Things were really coming along with the build, and I was keeping everything OEM. I was trying to figure out if I was going to flip it or race it in Autocross.
I ended up adding a ram air intake, then I painted the OEM wheels gold.
I ended up signing up for a few Autocross races in Connecticut to test the car.
Did 3 Autocross events in 2022, finished about mid pack in each of them, but beat a couple fast cars in each of them too.
Then I learned about RALLYCROSS at an autocross event, and I did a bunch of research and signed up for a couple in Vermont.
I ended up grabbing more OEM Subaru wheels too lol
I raced in 3 Rallycross events in Vermont in 2022, finishing 5th, 3rd and 3rd. I was pretty addicted to rallycross and sliding around in the dirt, so I made this my main focus for the car.
More recently, I added a lightweight crank pulley, catch can, new Rallycross specific tires, sway bar end links, new front wheel bearings, new axles and ball joints.
Now im pretty happy with the build. I rallycrossed it last Saturday at an event, but came in 7th (a lot of fast drivers in my category). But i have at least 3 more Rallycross events this year in New England, so it should be a fun year!
Nice to see someone actually get a car together and go beat the piss out of it like Odin intended
That said I'd look into putting a box around that air filter so it's not just eating hot air from the engine bay, and personally I wouldn't touch one of those lightweight crank pulleys on an engine I cared about
You’re reading my mind! I’ve already been looking I might fabricate my own 🤙🤙
Yeah get that lightweight crank pulley out if you care about the engine's longevity.
Noted on the crank pulley, thank you guys
Yeah, it's an unfortunate thing with subaru engines. We've got super lightweight crankshafts (subaru EJ25 crank = 20lbs, honda K24 crankshaft = 37lbs) that are also super short, so without a real harmonic balancer they're really susceptible to harmonic vibration, which tends to kill the thrust bearing eventually. If you see an EJ with thrust bearing failure it's almost always got a lightweight pulley
That said, a lightweight flywheel is a good way to get the same effect, plus faster free revving, without killing damping ability
I did find that info about vibrations when researching.
At the extreme end I'd go with like a 4lb flywheel and a fluidamper, personally
Tho finding a 4lb flywheel is quite hard
Ended up coming to the conclusion that its worth it.. it feels like it freed up some power, but im not diggin my heels in that sand about it. My opinion could change
(and they're also hilarious to drive with)
I mean there's plenty of people running that perrin part - most are turbo guys who blow their engines so regularly that they never know the difference
On a 251, it might be the difference between making 300k and only making 250k. Really just depends on how you feel about your engine. Personally I have a shed full of spare engines, but I still draw the line at the GDT "light enough" pulley with an 11lb flywheel
Yea i figured with a NA id be safer
Probably a bit. 251s are tough bastards, I've done nothing but abuse them for a decade or so now, and they take it like champs
