All i can say is never travel without it. Sone credit card companies have travelers insurance already so check
Lots of things will make price go up. Age, destination, duration and coverage. 288 does sound a lot though.
Maybe for muricans. My yearly fee was ~80€.
Then again, it was same for single trip too. Getting yearly was thus no brainer.
But i would expect to pay 150 or so if you’re going for a long trip
Sure but most people dont travel out of the country every year
True. But if yearly and single trip is same, taking yearly gives you that opportunity for a random surprise trip.
Travel insurance rates vary by country of residence, age, country(ies) of travel, and extras if you do special activities like bungee jumping, white water rafting, mountain/forest trekking, etc. Check the terms of the travel insurance policy. If the extras are not covered, getting injured doing those activities will not be covered by the travel insurance policy.
Actuarial assessments that determine rates are based on demographics and associated incidents of your country of residence. Thus, irrespective of what nationality you are, you can only buy travel insurance policy from the country you're residing in.
There is also difference coverage levels of travel insurance. Alliance offers I believe 3 tiers of plans and then add ons for things like “no questions cancellation”.
I also get travel insurance for anything international.
My blueshield medical has global coverage. Downloaded their app which shows what doctors and hospitals take the insurance. I’m going to call to confirm I’m covered.
I’ve heard that but haven’t read exactly what they cover. Going to see if I can find the information on their website.
Be careful and read what the policy covers because people have been dinged before not realizing that they weren't covered for something that they thought were covered for... some companies have traveller's insurance and they also have traveller's health insurance... other companies just have traveller's insurance that only covers certain parts like flights and hotels but not Healthcare... others only covers certain health and other emergencies but not hotel cancelation costs...
You also need to keep in mind about any liable health conditions before traveling because there is the possibility that your coverage could be denied after or during the claiming process.
A B.C. woman, who was on vacation in Florida, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her trip.
RoseAnne Timbrell ended up in a Florida hospital and thought she was fully covered by her extended health coverage through her employer. However, she received an unexpected USD $108k hospital bill months later.
She thought she was covered by her h...
Just giving another perspective since it's pretty one sided so far. I'm generally healthy and don't need to take daily prescription so your experience may vary.
The only time I brought travel insurance was my 3 weeks in India. Everything else I've gone without insurance. Some of those kinda adventurous I would say. Like trekking in the Himalayas, cycling a round for a couple of days in Easter Island, trek in Peru to Machu Picchu, hiked all around in the Dolomites, etc. Do at your own risk but if you take the precaution to minimize the risk then it generally should be fine. Obviously anything can happen out there but for now I'm taking that risk to not have insurance (besides for India).
Hm.... It's a little bit of a dumb risk 😂 but you do you. You only say that because nothing has happened YET.
Considering the fact that insurance was 0.5% of my trip budget, it was really not a big deal to take it. Odds on me catching anything is low, but if the poop hits the fan, just an ambulance flight back home costs 100k+.
Sure, it may…or it may not. I’m well aware of the risk. There are some things that I don’t take part in that regular people casually do so that alone reduces any of my risks significantly. And I think I’m too old now to scale down a cliff randomly 😅 no risk from that anymore 😂
Insurance can easily cost 25% of my entire trip
the older you are and the more pre-existing conditions you got the worse it gets
and there is no point in lying as you may as well throw your money away as your claim will never be accepted unless you declare EVERYTHING like even a headache - whatever you seen a GP for in the last 2 years or so
if we are talking about medical cover that is
they quoted me 500 something quid for a 7 days cruise ithat was worth 700 - I done a dumb thing and went without but it worked out OK. although I would never recommend going to USA with no insurance as the heathcare system there can easily bankrupt you
in Japan... not so much
Do be aware that Japan is facing problems of foreign tourists requiring medical treatment with no insurance and absconding after treatment.

For travels to the US, travel insurance with full medical coverage is essential.
