#

That sounds horrible. But I'm confident I can help you

twilit badger
#

Thank you!

#

So much

#

I get this error

lusty forum
#

when doing what precisely?

twilit badger
#

Clicking on "new project"

lusty forum
#

what does the error say?

twilit badger
#

this

lusty forum
#

It seems it may be a Firewall issue.
Are you using a particular anti-virus or Firewall software?

twilit badger
#

No

#

I even disabled windows

#

antivirus

lusty forum
#

hmm. you are the admin of the PC?

#

your account, is it an admin?

twilit badger
#

yes

lusty forum
#

kk

#

can you screenshot your Unity Hub?
Alt+Print Screen only takes the active window

#

in Unity Hub, click Installs (left pane) and screenshot

twilit badger
#

okay

#

wait

lusty forum
#

alright

#

now, open Task Manager

#

go to 'Performance'

#

screenshot and post

#

Just to make sure your hardware isn't being preoccupied by other stuff

twilit badger
#

k

lusty forum
#

and after that open Windows Explorer, and tell me how much Free Space is Left on C:

twilit badger
#

Hello?

#

Are you there?

lusty forum
#

✅ Storage Space
✅ CPU

❌ RAM
❌ Harddrive IO

#

Yes

#

How old is your harddrive?

#

is C and D the same physical drive?

twilit badger
#

I don't know

#

What do you want me to do?

lusty forum
#

Ok. Do you know how old the PC is?

twilit badger
#

5 years

#

Just asked my dad

lusty forum
#

I wonder if the process cannot start, because there aren't enough resources available.
We might be able to check if that is the case.

But either way, your computer is struggling at the moment.

#

Alright

#

you need a new HDD

#

they work for 4-6 years, and get slower over time

#

HDDs are the bottleneck of PCs

#

it is otherwise in good shape

#

Another thing to consider is more RAM

#

for a new HDD I strongly recommend an SSD, since they are much faster than traditional mechanical drives

twilit badger
#

Okay?

#

Is there any way I can use Unity?

#

I would do anything

#

Please I just want to code

lusty forum
#

We can try.
Go into Task Manager -> Startup

twilit badger
#

k

lusty forum
#

Sort them by Enabled / Disabled by clicking on that column

#

and screenshot

twilit badger
#

Okay wait

#

here

#

Are you there?

#

@lusty forum

#

okay

lusty forum
#

Show me Task Manager -> Programs

twilit badger
#

I dont see a programs

lusty forum
#

Processes

twilit badger
lusty forum
#

my bad

twilit badger
#

yes im back

lusty forum
#

sort it by Disk usage by clicking the column

#

and show me what's using all this stuff

twilit badger
#

k wait

#

one sec

twilit badger
#

what column

lusty forum
#

click the Disk column

#

to sort it

twilit badger
#

like this?

lusty forum
#

the other way around, so I see which programs are using the Disk

twilit badger
#

srry wrong ss

twilit badger
lusty forum
#

click the Disk column name
so that it puts all the processes using Disk at the top

twilit badger
#

here

lusty forum
#

Hmm. Your harddrive is about to fail completely.

twilit badger
#

Um what

lusty forum
#

As I said before - harddrives last for 4-6 years

#

over time they become more slow, until they stop working

#

at 100% your IO speed is 2.9 MB/s

#

about 2-4% the original speed

#

I reckon

twilit badger
#

Again.

#

Is there any way I can getunity?

lusty forum
#

always at 100% means it's not catching up with the system requirements

twilit badger
#

*Get unity?

lusty forum
#

I'm not sure you understand.
Your harddrive will die soon.

twilit badger
#

Okay.

#

So no?

lusty forum
#

I imagine it's already taking 10-20 minutes starting WIndows

twilit badger
lusty forum
#

if it is possible, you need to let Windows Update do all of its things, then stop all unnecessary programs, to free up resources, and try to start a project in Unity

twilit badger
#

I dont have anything except for discord and google chrome

#

So, not possible.

lusty forum
#

We can try

twilit badger
#

Thanks for ur time tho

#

okay what now

lusty forum
#

But I fear your first project will be lost with the harddrive, unless you use Unity Collab with it, so it's uploaded online, but that's also more of a strain on your harddrive O_o

#

Before we begin trying

twilit badger
#

not a problem

lusty forum
#

a very good Plan B for you, is to learn programming C# in Visual Studio. If you haven't already done it, you should start there first either way. Get the basics in.

Several people I've spoken to have made this exact approach, due to hardware limitations, and invested good time in learning C# beyond the basics, which gives you an incredible advantage.

twilit badger
#

Okay.

lusty forum
#

Now, let's try making Windows more performant

twilit badger
#

Okay

lusty forum
#

Start -> cmd (run as Admin)

#
net.exe stop superfetch
twilit badger
#

okay

#

wait

#

I get this

#

net.exe stop superfetch

lusty forum
#

lol, must have been wrong windows version for the guide, or an old guide

#

sec

#

go to Start -> Services

twilit badger
#

okay

lusty forum
#

sort them by Status, so that 'Running' services are on top

twilit badger
#

where

lusty forum
twilit badger
#

in the services app?

lusty forum
#

yeah, click the Status column to sort by it

twilit badger
#

my services is not responding

lusty forum
#

well, that's ironic :)

#

when you get a new harddrive, your computer will be 10 times faster

twilit badger
#

k its back

twilit badger
#

YES

#

um ok

lusty forum
#

harddrives are cheap tho

twilit badger
#

my services is responding

lusty forum
#

doesn't have to be good, just new

#

once you've sorted them, find Windows Search

#

right click -> Properties

twilit badger
#

donw

#

yes?

lusty forum
#

Startup type: Disabled

twilit badger
#

done

lusty forum
#

and also, right click -> Stop

twilit badger
#

k done

#

its loading

#

its stuck

#

its done now

lusty forum
#

Windows Search keeps indexing files on your harddrive. It can still search when you ask it to, just slower. This way, your computer won't keep entertaining it in the background.

twilit badger
#

K

lusty forum
#

I'm reading online right now to try to find other services to turn off

#

I used to do this a lot before, for optimizing

twilit badger
#

Oh nice

lusty forum
#

ah one thing

twilit badger
#

Yes

#

what

lusty forum
#

fk where is it lol

#

meanwhile, go to Windows Update and make sure you have turned off Automatic Updates, or limited the time when it looks for them

twilit badger
#

k

lusty forum
#

Windows Update will make your computer completely unusable at times, at least for Unity stuff

lusty forum
#

I'll show you once I'm done with my current focucs

#

but before I do that, here's a Plan C

#

if your harddrive fails

#

and you are unable to get a new one

twilit badger
#

yes?

lusty forum
#

you can get a USB Flash drive, with at least 4-8 GB, pref much more.

#

you can learn C# coding and perhaps even Unity by running Linux Live from the USB

twilit badger
#

do I have to buy it?

lusty forum
#

Linux is free. A flash drive ofc costs money, but some have left overs laying around.

twilit badger
#

so thats a no

#

gr8

lusty forum
#

can you shovel snow or mow a lawn for money every now and then?

twilit badger
#

Um no

#

I would love to

#

but I just cant

lusty forum
#

I'm not sure about your situation, but as long as there is some way of earning a dime, what you need doesn't cost much.

#

Alright.

twilit badger
#

okay

twilit badger
lusty forum
#

harddrive, USB or Linux?

twilit badger
#

usb

lusty forum
#

what's a site you can buy from? ebay? amazon?

twilit badger
#

Amazom

#

Amazon

#

my budget is like 20$

#

Are you there?

lusty forum
#

You can get a decent USB drive for 8 USD

#
  • shipping, maybe
twilit badger
#

k

twilit badger
lusty forum
#

Yes, it would be a more complete solution

twilit badger
#

Okay

lusty forum
#

and your computer would literally be faster than ever before

twilit badger
#

Ill see

twilit badger
#

Nice

lusty forum
#

Yes.

#

Right now your harddrive is at most operating at 5% its original speed

#

an SSD is faster than any Mechanical HDD

twilit badger
#

of

#

oof

twilit badger
#

Do you have to open up the laptop

lusty forum
#

so if you can't afford an SSD, at least look at a Mechanical Harddrive

twilit badger
#

to put it in or smthn?

lusty forum
#

Yes, the harddrive is the easiest component to replace on a laptop. There is usually a dedicated plastic lid for it on the bottom side of your laptop.

twilit badger
#

k

lusty forum
#

Now that you say it's a laptop - do you regularly clean the CPU fan for dust particles?

twilit badger
#

Okay.

twilit badger
#

I started using it in the start of 2020

lusty forum
#

oh, you're on a Stationary PC right now?

twilit badger
#

I don't know what that means.

lusty forum
#

are you currently on a laptop?

twilit badger
#

Yes.

lusty forum
#

okay, not Stationary then

#

have you ever cleaned the CPU fan of Dust Particles?

twilit badger
#

No

#

not at all

#

And my laptop heats up very quickly

lusty forum
#

then that is something we can fix!

twilit badger
#

and makes a sound louder than a fan

#

Nice

#

how tho

lusty forum
#

either a Vacuum cleaner or Pressurized Air for Electronics, or a Compressor will do the job

#

make sure the laptop is turned off

#

and the battery is plugged out, if possible

#

unplug everything

twilit badger
#

Okay

lusty forum
#

then you try your best to soak up some dust from the fan

#

even better:

#

unscrew the lid on top or beside the CPU fan (on the bottom side), so that you can clear more of the dust inside

twilit badger
#

Um.

#

I have a laptop

lusty forum
#

Yes, this is for a laptop

#

what model is it?

twilit badger
#

its a windows 10 laptop

#

How do I check the model?

lusty forum
#

Manufacturer and Model number are stated on text on the bottom-side of the laptop, or at the edge of the monitor

twilit badger
#

k wait

lusty forum
#

if the laptop has Not Been Used for 4 years straight, then the harddrive might not need replacing.

twilit badger
#

Can't find it sorry.

twilit badger
#

I don't remember

lusty forum
#

kk

twilit badger
#

he said it was used for three years straight

#

1 year break

#

and then I used it

lusty forum
#

ok, then it sounds like it should have a few more years

#

the thing about laptops and heat

#

is that when it gets hot, the CPU clocks down

#

and everything goes slower, to fight heat-generation

twilit badger
#

Like every app stops responding.

#

suddenly

lusty forum
#

That means the CPU reaches 100 degrees Celcius or lower, at which point the hardware decides to Shut Down

#

oh

#

if it all stops responding, then the above is almost what is happening

twilit badger
#

Okay.

lusty forum
#

if any normal computer's CPU reaches 100 degrees, even my own, the PC will automatically instantly shut down

twilit badger
#

Isn't that the boiling point of water

#

-_-

#

I'm pretty sure that my pc doesn't get that hot

lusty forum
#

well yes, but that's merely a coincidence, I believe

#

it could be laptops turn off at less than 100 deg

twilit badger
#

Okay.

lusty forum
#

if a graphics card reaches too high temperatures, it is permanently broken in some ways, usually by broken vertical lines called "artifacts"

#

Anyway

twilit badger
#

I don't get that.

lusty forum
#

You need to remove the dust from the CPU fan

lusty forum
twilit badger
#

k

lusty forum
#

If you know the model number you can find the PDF Manual online. Or maybe you have it somewhere.
Or you can just go by... hoping you know what you're doing.

twilit badger
#

What should I look for?

#

I have 2 things

lusty forum
#

Basically, depending on the laptop, there should be about 4 standard screws holding a lid together, above the CPU fan, on the bottom of the laptop.

There may be several lids.
They will be marked with icons, which may or may not make sense \o/

twilit badger
#

A service taag

#

*tag

lusty forum
#

you can simply look at the sides of your computer, and visually identify which Lid it should be

#

based on where you see the fan

twilit badger
#

I see the fan on only 1 side on the laptop

#

the left side

lusty forum
#

once the lid is unscrewed
you have access to vaccum the CPU fan

Note these things before you do:

  • Always keep one of your hands in physical contact with part of the laptop metal frame (to ensure electrical grounding, and no unexpected static electricity)
  • Try to not physically touch the laptop with the Vacuum cleaner. Curl your hands around the intake, if you need to vacuum close. This is also to reduce the risk of static electricity.
twilit badger
#

Okay.

lusty forum
#

If you have a way to blow air instead, that is more effective, though makes everything fly all over

twilit badger
#

k

lusty forum
#

Well, this dragged on longer than I anticipated

twilit badger
#

🤣 same

lusty forum
#

I am very certain that once you have cleared the dust, your laptop will be much faster.
Once that is done, go to #💻┃unity-talk and ask for any further assistance.

#

beginner code was the wrong channel, but I saw no harm in making a thread for this case

#

We're eager to welcome new developers :)

twilit badger
#

I can't tell you how much I appreciate this.

#

Thank you so much.

#

I definitely came to the right place. :)

#

Thanks again.

lusty forum
#

You are most welcome.
Let me know how it goes.
You can DM for that case, but I won't respond to other requests there. My life is rather full :p

twilit badger
#

lol

lusty forum
#

Clearing dust should be done every 3-6 months, depending on the environment.

twilit badger
#

Hey @lusty forum
