in doom eternal you are shown by a video on what the ability does
then you test the ability in a test chamber
then the level tries to give you forms to use the ability
and then the next 3 to 4 levels (or less depends on your game) you use that new ability progressively more until you are as comfortable with it as the other ones, you need enough levels depending on how complex the ability is and how much it will be used, like grenades 2 levels will be enough, but a flame thrower weapon needs 3. More complex and not usual = more levels
Ability = one world
So bascily let’s say 10 worlds
Right and each world is focused on a different ability
if you were to put 5 abilities i would recommend to give one space between them

each ability is not the same, and change the gameplay

A thing where you can switch between abilities
well that's more player actions, so it will result in a general gameplay where the abilities can't be that different

but i can't give a very deep advice, until you have more gameplay ideas
