press 1 on your numpad
with the numbers on numpad you can switch between different angles
1, 3, 7, 9 are the four directions
and with Alt+Y (or Alt+Z) i dont know which is correct for your keyboard layout) you can toggle the X-Ray mode
then you can select all the faces with the rect tool
!
Now you can do that
go to material, klick on plus, klick on new
nice thing to now is, that you can increase the selection by one if you press CTRL and + (on numpad)
Now choose acolor in "base color" and click assign
