you missed a whole bunch of other regions.
also a game jam strictly for people above 18? good...
The first list is obviously sanctions. I suspect the latter is some law on prize money.
Can't we participate without aiming for prizes?
it's a game jam. just pretend those laws don't exist and deal with them later. obviously someone from Iran understands that
putting it upfront is something totally different
I see, thanks for your answer
Yeah you could. Just risk being disqualified if you actually win the thing lol
I think that's the whole point of game jams anyways? it's just that corporation (and youtubers sometimes) usually make things too much about the end result.
so you get this.
There are people who compete in jams "competitively" and people who come there for the experience
As soon as you combine prices + international community you cannot really include non-adults, thats opening a legal can of worms ๐
I usually just join them to test out some new tech
Nowadays I mostly join because I enjoy teaching beginners, I code all day at work and my personal projects so helping people achieve their first own game is a better feeling than coding myself ๐
That's really cool
My first gamedev job was hyper casual mobile games, so basically 1 game prototype a week (+2 weeks if the numbers were right). In my time at that company I created around 90 prototypes
So basically one solo game jam a week ๐ - with a stricter topic
I've done the one-game-a-week thing myself yeah. Stops being a challenge real quick.
The only thing that stopped me from going insane was the occasional game reaching top10 on the mobile stores
its really just a throw stuff at the wall until something sticks type of game creation
the biggest one i created now has around 300m downloads on android + ios combined
It's probably the easiest way to make some money from games these days. Especially on web. But I can't bring myself to do it anymore ๐
Nowadays you could probably vibe code them too so it's basically just data entry.
mhh idk, after the apple changes that whole thing really took a hit
Yeah, webgames are the new shovelware frontier
I'm looking forward to this, but I'll only be able to be 100% active if I'm looking for a job. This leaves me wanting to secure my next job, yet at the same time, I don't want to. ๐คท
Does anyone know if there is a short list of themes we can see? Like Ludum Dare does? I.e. they usually listed 10 themes a week before hand, which gave us time to consider the potential for each.
in #1429766624403132416 are we supposed to make posts or just message under the pinned thread?
I imagine a thread would be more organized.
@noble anchor hey is it okay if I DM you? it's about the jam
You make posts only if you have a team (and use the thread for management, discussions and such with your team). To look for teams, use the main thread
It's all in the Forum Guidelines
Is there any place where we can see the past unity jams? I'd like to see what the briefs and winning games look like
There has been no past ones ๐ซ
Yea, this is the first one we're doing ๐ซก
oh- ๐
im excited for this jam it will be my second jam ever tommorow will be my first :)
I've never been in one. How long did it take to complete your first jam?
Well It Starts Tommorow And Its Gonna Last A Week But It Depends On The Jam SomeTimes Its 2 Days Sometimes A Month
iโd imagine its gonna take me the full week bc of school and work
@haughty cove I already have a team, Should I fill any form or tell anyone to finalize our team?
Also are there any prizes
Hey @wicked jasper ! No Prizes! Just jamming for the vibes. ๐๐ฟ But I will note, we do have a special category titled "Most Creative Use of Anniversary Assets" where some of the Unity peeps will be selecting their Top 3. No prize for that but will be featured on the Unity Live stream.
Oh cool
Also I saw that there is no limits on team size
Does that mean I can even have 10 members
Yup! Skies the limit
Note that more people usually means less gets done ๐
Speaking about jams specifically. Keep it small.
Related to the team, you can just create your team thread in the #1430582118165119108 with your team infos (participants, whos doing what etc) so we know who's participating. Yu can use it for planning, chat with your team, etc . Only one thread per team.
Ah okay, Is it compulsory though that we communicate over there after forming team?
Should we also create a thread in team hangout if we're jamming solo or with people off of discord?
Sure yeah. It's a space for you to have discussions or updates.
lmao so there are literally no prizes at all? what's even the point of entering? you get 5 minutes of fame if you win?
For F U N
Why? like there is no prizes or anything
This rule also seems a bit extra, so if a new version of unity drops while the jam goes on, we have to update to the latest alpha version of unity and publish our game with that?
Anyway wish you all fun ๐ Wish it was a bit longer game jam for a 20th anniversary I only have limited time on those specific days
Unfortunately, no monetary/tangible prizes this go around. Definitely something we will consider for possible future Game Jams we host. ๐
Just for the fun of it
Haha! Def don't have to update to the latest alpha build. haha. Definitely make sure your on the latest LTS though.
Why is that for?
then why this rule #archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 message if not regional sanctions?
Well, i may be being a bit general by saying "Latest LTS". Sorry. Definitely want to make sure you are on the latest version updated to patch the recent security vulnerability.
For real, feels pretty gross and out of touch to restrict participation from younger devs and devs of certain countries, especially for a game jam meant to be fun and celebratory
This is interesting too especially d which Unity may claim your game saying they made it before you without having to prove it and also dont have to credit you
The contest rules specifically relate to being eligible for the contest ( for example, eligibility for the "Most creative use of anniversary assets") . We recently updated the jam page to make it a bit more clear. Sorry for any confusion.
Anyway good luck and fun and hopefully they'll revise some rules (like the one's mentioned already and more jam time)
i see alright
oh yeah that may not be credited is a weird one
Iโd imagine a lot of this is just a big company covering their ass and wonโt actually happen
That's all it is. There's nothing wrong with those points.
Itโs really odd that a jam with no prizes has sanctioned countries
This is corporate as hell, just go to itch.io, thereโs plenty of jams to join there
Idk what business a game engine has picking sides in global politics, Id imagine no one would care if someone from the united states 'enemies list' participated in a game jam with no prizes. I'm sure there is some reason but it was probably made by someone that has nothing to do with actual game development or maintenance of the engine which seems to be a common theme in unity decision making.
I'll need to know who's part of the team so I can grant the game jam special role so it's not compulsory, but I advise to create at least an info thread about your team
Might seem like a totally smooth brained question, but is it perfectly fine for me to participate in this as a solo dev without a team?
Yes
Yes ofc!!
Thought so, just wanted to be sure, cheers!
Iโm new to game dev and have been enjoying the Unity learn programmes. I would love to take part to push my learning. Looking forward to it. Happy to team up with other new game devs.
Hey friends! Joy here, part of the micro-team behind this jam! I had some technical difficulties with Discord so was MIA for a minute, but I'm here now and I'm so excited!
First things first, I want to acknowledge the concerns around the contest rules. We hear you loud and clear, and we're hard at work in the background trying to get things clarified and comprehensible for y'all. At the end of the day much of the language included in the contest rules is there for legal and compliance reasons. This isn't something that was drafted because of this jam specifically, but rather standard language that's included in all of our documentation for events in this vein. Please bear with us on this front, and we'll come back to you with news ASAP!
Next, I just want to share how overwhelmingly amazing it is to see you all here with the jammer 20 role next to your names! Putting this jam together has been an absolute passion project, and I am just so honored that you guys are here to participate. It makes all the long hours, late nights, and nightmares (yeah I had a stress dream about this!) more than worth it. I started using the Unity engine in 2010, and it completely changed the trajectory of my career and life. I downloaded the engine because of a gig, but I stuck with it because of the community. The Unity community is made up of some of the most welcoming, kind, and supportive devs I have ever met in my time in industry, and it makes me so happy to be able to put something together to help celebrate such a significant milestone with you all!
Thanks again for joining us for the jam! This is gonna be SO COOL!
If I understand correctly this 20th Unity GameJam, it will be for 2 days only ?
It's a 48 hour jam, yeah
this is my first game jam so like how this work
A theme will be announced and then you make a game using that theme.
I guess technically it is 43 hours since it will start 20:00 7th and end at 15:00 9th Nov ๐
More of a 18 hour jam for me, since I'll be at work for the rest
Looking forward to seeing what emerges, though; it feels like 90% of the progress in a jam is in the last 10% of the time after all!
Was kinda interested in the jam but then it says you must NOT be a resident of Quebec, Canada; Brazil; or Italy;
...Why?
iirc that's only for the most creative use of anniversary assets contest
For Quebec, at least, probably because the Quebecois government made laws which require contests that include Quebec to file in advance with the government - in Canadian French - file for special insurance, and allow the RACJ oversight over tbe contest, even for folks outside Quebec. Most of these laws were repealed in 2023, but lots of companies just find it easier to exclude the place than to deal with them.
Guessing that the other excluded regions have similar issues.
A quick check online shows both Brazil and Italy having similarly difficult to deal with laws.
@jovial plover
If you will be here a modrator I will think youre a god
Oh okay thanks for the info. Yeah must be a hassle
?? that's random lmao
dang, thanks! 48 hours! I have never done that. It is so short. One must be really prepared
Must say that it is quite underwhelming.. 20 years anniversary seems like a big thing, feels like actually a reason to celebrate and create some great memories.. Lots of devs entered gamedev industry through Unity many years ago.. Yet it's just basically a regular game jam. Unity market value is about 15 billion USD, by the way. This just makes me sad, idk.
Would you really rather have something massive, corporate, and soulless?
From the official rules:
The Contest begins at 5:00:00PM UTC, Friday, November 7, 2025 (the โStart Dateโ) and ends at
11:59:59 PM UTC, Friday, November 9, 2025 (the โDeadlineโ).
Time travel much? Friday November 9 won't happen until 2029.
No there is just no weekend that week and you have to work 7 days instead of 5
no this is just small and corporate
Hey, how does the ranking work on itch? Is there an overall ranking calculated from the others criteras? If so does it count the one where you need to use Unity assets?
Hey, to join 20th game jam do i need to do something more than click join jam on webside about it?
but like
what's the point of this
cuz like there's no reward or like incentive to actually participate no?
Most game jams have no "point" if that's what your motivation is. Even the largest jams that take place such as Global Game Jam have no "point".
Nope! Just click "Join Jam" on the itch.io game jam page to join.
Hey Unity Peeps!
I know there has been some discussion around the Jam's contest rules, so I wanted to share some background and share some exciting updates about the event.
When @north geyser and I, along with the rest of the micro-team, originally began envisioning this jam, we really wanted it to be all about the vibes (aka no prizes) specifically because we wanted to keep things as simple as possible.
But, because it was important to us to have the opportunity to highlight some of the cool stuff you will all end up making during the jam (through sharing your jam projects on the Unity Live Stream and by creating a post-event Sizzle reel), it was key for us to include contest rules, in order to respect global law.
And though we didn't originally plan to have monetary or physical prizes, after hearing your feedback and listening to your voices, we did some work behind the scenes and we are excited to share thatโฆ
The Top 3 winners of the "Most Creative Use of Anniversary Assets" category will now have the opportunity to win some cool prizes!
Check out the prizes on the Itch.io Game Jam Page (https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam)
We pulled this all together in short-order, so we can't promise the world, but we hope this makes the event even more rewarding for those involved. ๐
To echo Joy, I cannot explain how excited we are to make this Jam happen!
I'm a HUGE fan of game jams and have participated in (and supported) quite a few over the years. Since the first time I picked up Unity after hearing about it at GDC 2012, it's been a big wish of mine to one day see a Unity-hosted game jam truly happen.
And with this game jam coming to fruition, my literal dream has come true. ๐ฅน
Thank you all for joining in on the festivities, for supporting this event, and for your patience with us throughout this process!
We are super pumped to see the games you create throughout the Jam!
Happy Jamming y'all!
Really excited to participate in the jam can't wait see what everyone makes. Thank you Bradston and Joy for hosting this event!
Yooo !! Is that Christian!?!! ๐๐ฟ Thanks for the words and pumped to have you join!
Ofc! Wouldn't want to miss the official Unity game jam!
Thanks for clarifying everything. Really excited to get jamming ๐
<@&502884371011731486> sorry for the ping but I didnt see a support channel or the likes:
1409830157031702550
#1161868835423526933 or you can DM a mod directly for issues in the future.
Sorry, will do, usually used to the opposite that the mods don't want to be DMed outside of the server ๐
I feel like i'm gonna regret this ๐
Anyways hi, I'm a XR dev for several years now and what better occasion to try and make my first game than a 48h no-sleep crunch ? Gotta catch up with the industry ๐ค
That is awesome! You're gonna love it. Game Jams are something special๐๐ฟ
Just be sure to pace yourself and stay well hydrated. There is no sense in speed running burnout as well
Yes I know, 'twas ironic
But thx
Hey Unity, you have different closing times and dates on every platform where you announced the jam - including an error in the official rules. Please coordinate it, so we can get certainty on when the jam closes.
Hey @stark hound! Could you share where those differences may be (on which platforms) so we can fix them, if possible? And, could you let me know what the error is in the official rules? Definitely would like to fix that as well.
Also, if you ever have any confusion, use the Game Jam Page on Itch(https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam) to get the most up-to-date info.
The jam-announcements channels lists the closing time as "November 9, 2025 7:00 AM" (with no timezone associated) while the itchio page lists it as "November 9th 2025 at 6:59 PM" (itch converts it to local time, EST for me) while the official rules state "November 9th 2025 at 11:59:59 PM UTC" which would convert to 7:59 pm EST.
Ah okay! Will look into seeing if we can update the jam-channel listing with a time zone. The other issue is daylight savings time. It should work out to 6:59 EST on the 9th of November after the time change.
Oh? iitch doesn't convert the time to local on my side. Yesterday I saw the UTC time
!!
There's no command called
!.
If it's showing 7AM for you in the #๐ขโjam-announcements , it's selecting your timezone. Sadly I cannot add the timezone stamps, as this is a code and will show different times for everyone.
For me shows 5pm for example as I'm in UK and same when I go to itchi.io page
I'll try to update it as it's weird not converting to your timzeone auto
Updated
Hey, have anyone made an overview or screenshots of the anniversary assets? I curious what's inside, but I don't have time for now to download and check what are those...
Yup! You can check out some of the screenshots on the game jam page (https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam).
If you scroll to the bottom of the jam page, you can see previews for each of the packages.
Lol, can't believe I didn't scrolled to the bottom, I looked at that page like 10 times ๐
Thank you โค๏ธ
Haha! Totally understand๐ And my pleasure to help how I can ๐๐ฟ Happy Jamming! ๐
@clever heath This is #archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 , if you are looking for specific command you can use the search feature, or ask in an appropriate channel. Don't spam unrelated channels.
be made using the most updated version of the Unity Engine
I think this warrants clarification!
Does this mean we can use 6.0 but it must be the latest patch release?
Does it have to be 6.2? Does it have to be the latest patch release?
Does it even have to be 6.3 beta or 6.4 alpha?
Just pointing out that this is unclear wording.
Already answered
This clarification should probably be added to the itch.io page. Not sure how many people will see this random discord message.
i'm guessing you didn't read much in that thread then
hint: the information is linked in literally the second message
@cursive plover This is #archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 If you are unable to read the forum message use at least the google search.
any jammers need a programer ? im here
yo yo yo!!!! hyped for the jammm
i have a small question!!
i live in romania, this is what i see on the itch page
i thought it would be 48 h? it's longer? that's really good, it's 55 in total from what i see here?? but i saw some people complain above in this chat that it should be longer? did i come here after the change or is this wrong?
i'm just a bit confused after speed reading through this chat
@rocky meadow you are reading that absolutely right! Because we wanted to give as a many people as possible a chance to jam across the globe, regardless of timezone, we extended the jam a bit beyond 48hrs to hopefully help. ๐
I want to join a team but I don't have a portfolio
Definitely check out the #1429766624403132416 to find a team!
Hi all, Iโm shei and Iโm an associate artist looking for a team, please check my post on the #1429766624403132416 โจ
#1434524724523831316
Hello everyone, do you know if we can use fmod for the project ?
Hi! I have a question about the contest eligibility, specifically about what counts as country of residence. I am a citizen of a country that is not eligible, but I currently live in another country that is eligible. Which country counts for the purposes of these rules?
Yes
You cannot be a resident (someone who is currently living in) in any of those listed countries.
Ok great so since I currently live in an eligible country all is good
Thanks
Does the phrase 'be made using the most updated version of the Unity Engine' include the recently developed Unity 6? Which version should I use?
clarification here #archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 message
Thank you!
Hey all. Two quick questions:
- How do I join channels that aren't available on the left right now? I don't see jam-announcements and jam-resources mentioned on the itch.io jam page.
- Are our entries required to be started from scratch or can we use existing code / base project?
(oh team-hangout isn't on the left as well)
I wish the Events page would have linked these as well since they're mentioned on the jam page
Was just looking through that. Thank you!
For anyone else, click on Channels & Roles on the left, Browse Channels tab
To answer question 2, you can check out the details in the Submission Eligibility section on the game jam page but here are the highlights:
-
The use of pre-existing code and art assets are allowed but you must have the legal right to use those assets. Please credit external authors of assets in your project description, where possible.
-
All games should be original games that were not created prior to the event or during other game jams.
Thank you! I appreciate it
You guys ready for the game jam? ๐
Looking forward to it - my first one and new to dev
so unity is turning 20 on nov 7th?
Technically it was back in June
ah ok
Hello people!
exicted for this game jam !
Hello everyone
Anyone have any guesses for the theme ๐
I can't wait to see the theme reveal.
where is these
thanks @high dove
if you use only a few anniversary assets can you still win top 3 for the Most Creative Use of Anniversary Assets
Are #1429766624403132416 only for the anniversary jam?
Yes
ok thanks
hello!
This is going to be my first game jam ever and I am pretty much a newbie on game dev, but would be fun to challenge my self and learn at the same time with the time window.
I don't expect to win at all but was wondering does the game need to have a completely finished level?
If you're talking about winning, then naturally something playable would have a better chance.
mainly just talking about for participating if it is required to have a completely finished game, I don't really care about winning ๐
There are no requirements for what the game has to be or what state it has to be in
Awesome. Thank you!
sorry for ping, but im a bit confused about "Entrant Eligibility", are people from Russia allowed to take a part in it?
There's written in the rules: You are eligible to enter this Contest if you meet all of the following requirements as of the time
and date of entry: You are NOT a resident of the Crimea region of the Ukraine, Cuba, Iran, North Korea,
Sudan, or Syria, due to U.S. Export Regulations (and any other regions or countries
prohibited under the U.S. Export Regulations);
so belarus or russia can participate
I'm currently in italy but my residence is officially in Turkey, am i eligible?
thx
Hello!
Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone know how to get the bagde "Jammer 20" here on discord?
If your country of residence is on the list of ineligible countries then no, you cannot be chosen as a winner. You could still participate though, there's no way to restrict anyone from doing so.
I think you gotta post in team hangout but Iโm not really sure who/when/how theyโre given out.
Guys, where and how I assamble a team?
where can i create threats for it? it has been closed
that specific thread has been closed. but the channel is still open
yeah sorry
thanks
Feel free to make a post in #1429766624403132416 (#1429879403164467262 message)
"You are NOT a resident of Quebec, Canada; Brazil; or Italy;" Why?
#archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 message
#archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 message
-# honestly one, or both, of these should be pinned to (hopefully) stop this question from popping up over and over
any team looking for game dev ?
You can still jam if you are from those countries/provinces, itโs just limited to the anniversary asset competition as their is a prize that has โmonetary valueโ and those locations have local laws (language, etc) that make it quite difficult to run completions
But donโt let that discourage you from jamming, the experience trumps any prizes/rewards you could get!
Yeah for me is more the fact that part of my team is in Brazil
Yo guys, how to get Jammer20 role? Do I have to register my team?
aa got it
Is there a team up channel for the jam?
any tips for how you got it? haha
hellooo
hi
hello

hello guys
good morning, until when is regestration for upcoming jam?
It should have 1 more day to register, its through itch so here is the timer: https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam
wow idk i just enable jam announcements and resources in id:browse
Do we need to post in #1429766624403132416 to get it even if we aren't looking for a team? ๐
hi
Oh man, super excited. I wonder if this is the first ever game jam Unity hosted themselves, just dont remember if there was any before.
The url is also wonky with a "Get tarted--"
This is the first official Unity game jam they are hosting themselves.
Then I'm glad I won't miss it. Heard about this literally last night.
What will the theme be like? Is it just a word like other jams, or is it more a set of rules? Any previous jams with themes?
hey, i'm new here. i have unity version 6000.1.15f1. is this ok for the jam or do i need to update?
Depends on your team. ๐ You can make it in any version you want as a solo developer.
But within a team you want to sync up with other jammers to make sure you're making it in the same version
got it, ye im joining as a solo.. thanks!
You're welcome! ๐
Just as a heads up @trim stream ๐ I just noticed that the provided assets are in the most recent version. So might be something to think about if you're wanting to use them.
oh, didnt know that thanks.. i was actually thinking to use them.. damn it ๐
Try to open them in your current version. Maybe it all works out... ๐๐ซฃ
Maybe just the number 20 ๐
GGJ used to do just sound or images or abstract concepts
Hello
should it be webGl build ? or executable will work
i think its going to be related to Halloween
Nah Halloween is past and gone ๐
Good Catch @viscid pewter! As many times as we've reviewed and fixed typos, we TOTALLY missed that ๐
Nope. It doesn't not need to be WebGL. Executable is fine. But, WebGL is more accessible to people. I always encourage people to make a WebGL build (along with their executables) if they are able for itch Game Jams.
Yup! As far as we can tell, we have never hosted our own Game Jam before! We are soooo pumped about this!
Sound fair, thanks
Is there any sort of press kit for the jam? Id like to make some custom stream graphics

where can I see the details for the jam?
sorry I knew I saw it somewhere but couldn't remember ๐
As far as I know, just what's on the itch.io jam page
Yep
Hey guys, quick question, do we have to use Unity 20th anniversary assets for this game jam or is it optional?
Answer: (You are not required to use these assets throughout your jam, but we would love to see how you might creatively leverage them in new and exciting ways)
that's covered on the jam page
Hey
thanks
"To create an Entry, you must develop a game using the most updated version of the Unity Engine and
incorporating the Unity 20th Anniversary Assets provided for the jam". It is from this doc referenced on game jam itch page: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MC38N4ilRuqgQ2Mi4MrsiKtWkZK0rd6q/view
that is specifically for the entry into the most creative use of the anniversary assets contest. not the jam itself
thanks for clearing that up
Can we prepare a sampleproject for the gamejam ?
Sure, why not?
You don't know what the theme is, so there's only so much you can prepare. But setting up a project with your common packages and stuff would be a good way to get ready.
thank you
Hey all, it's almost time!!! Get hyped, the countdown to the theme announcement has begun!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qxvTW9hS4M
The time has finally come for the 20th Anniversary Jam theme announcement! Watch the video, get hyped, and get planning!
There's still time to join the jam! Check out full details on itch.io: https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam
Hey guys which channel do you search for teammates in
Exactly how much time after now will the theme be announced?
Sorry the timezones confuse me
Click the video, it will tell you how many hours remain and what time it will be for you.
(At the bottom left, this is for where I am, for example)
I'm looking to join in the jam solo, posted my current project in #1180170818983051344 if anyone wants to see what I can do
quick question, to form a team I have to submit it somewhere?
You don't have to submit anything, no.
You can use the #1429766624403132416 to look for people to create a team with, and use #1430582118165119108 to create a thread for you and your team to interact with/update your project on. It's not mandatory.
The only thing you need to submit is your actual game on Itch as part of the game jam itself.
great! thanks for the info
can we modify anniversary assets if we want to be allowed entry into the most creative use of the anniversary assets contest category
Yea, so they can be modified but they have to be easily distinguishable as one of our 20th anniversary assets
Another question, I'm from Brazil, I understand that I'm not legible to participate in the 20th anniversary assets category, but may I participate in the Jam at all? With my Brazilian team
Other than glory ๐ค
Anybody making AR game for jam?
Isn't iitch.io only accepting PC executables or webgl?
I'm guessing web games would get played more
what's the license for the anniversary assets like? I'm assuming we are free to do whatever we want with them but I want to make sure
My hunch is use is only for the Jam - someone asked earlier and you can edit if they're still distinguishable as one of the assets
I think that's more about qualifying for the category rather than legal
but not 100% sure
rip I'm going to have to install yet another unity version ๐ข
I'm guessing that's 6000.2.10f1 - I'm installing it right now
oh man I looked at the assets and my brain isn't coming up with anything interesting ๐ญ I hope the theme gets the gears turning
@north geyser @small mirage would it be possible to get a page up showing the assets included in each of the Unity 20th Anniversary Assets? Or maybe links to their Asset Store pages so that we can see what they are before downloading 1.55GB? ๐
there is a preview on the itch page
Like this image?
Download the one called "20thAnniversary All Assets"
yes
That 1 zip has content of the other downloads (no need to download them twice)
it splits them asset by asset in there
Hey Jeremy, scroll to the bottom of the jam page to see all the assets
Yeah, that's another note. I clicked "Download All" at the top, which downloaded a Zip of each asset plus a zip of everything.
@north geyser could you confirm that 6000.2.10f1 is the version we have to use?
also do you know what kind of licensing the free assets have?
You can use any version of Unity so long as it has the security patch! The 20th assets have the same license as those on the Unity asset store!
So it doesn't have to be the most updated version? Making sure because that's what it said in the rules
I think I have to make use of the banana ๐
Yea, you can use any version of the Unite Engine (e.g. 2017.x, 2022.x, 6.x) but we require you to use a version of the Unity Editor that has our latest security patch applied. For more information about our Unity versions and security patches check out this link: https://unity.com/releases/editor/archive
Sounds good, thank you for clearing that up guys ๐
Yes thank you for that clarification
This is my new favorite skybox
Fun fact! I preserved the original naming conventions of the assets wherever I could, so those skybox names are the same as when they were first launched. I'm not sure why that one is called cliche. If anything, I think the one called dream is more cliche? ๐
That banana saved my sanity once, true story.
NEED team
How can I get the jammer20 role??
Need a partner for jam
Hey, i have a quick question about games posted on jam, i arleady join jam on itch, do i have to do anything more? Also where i should post build of the gmae i made during jam?
There should be instructions on the jam site for that. If not perhaps they will update them once the jam starts?
same question !!!
Are we allowed to go and make something like a character controller before it starts and then use it in the jam, or would that be against the rules and not just "reuse"?
considering you can purchase a complete character controller off the asset store for monies I don't see whynot
2 day jam, you can't expect creating systems from the bottom up anyway. I can't imagine even creating new assets in that timespan
where is the forum . I cant find it ๐
Good question ๐
Looking-for-a-team
Once the jam officially starts, you'll be able to submit a project through the game jam page (using the "Submit" button). In order to submit, you will first need to upload your project to itch (on your page/profile). When you select "Submit" on the game jam page you will be allowed to select the project you uploaded on your page.
Hey folks, depending on what comes out of the theme I am planning to work on a conversational AI game, either with smart NPCs or voice commands. Wondering if anyone wants to join? Also if you'd wanna make something on your own, I have a small gift for anyone who can easily integrate Smart NPCs in their games.
https://discord.com/channels/489222168727519232/1435933299414667325
So the general answer is yes but here is what we say about that topic on the game jam page for more clarification:
-
The use of pre-existing code and art assets are allowed but you must have the legal right to use those assets. Please credit external authors of assets in your project description, where possible.
-
All games should be original games that were not created prior to the event or during other game jams.
Channels & Roles tab, down there you should see it.
god damn people doing some scary ass stuff
Join it let's do it together ๐
this is my first game jam so i wanna do something by myself sorry
No worries, good luck!
This ?
Yes!
which version should i get for the jam, the lts or the newest?
any one that has had the security patch applied
so it doesn't have to be Unity 6 necessarily
why do the rules say that it is required for submission then?
seems to just be poorly written, but @small mirage clarified it yesterday
I'll try to find the message one sec
oh aight, thats at least easier and more comfortable, also could you link that clarification for me? nvm ur doing that
eyy
if not using Unity 6 though test the assets they give you beforehand because (and I may have hallucinated or dreamed this) I think I saw someone mention something about some of them being made for Unity 6 only? but idk what that would even mean considering they seem to be sprite/model assets only
thats fine, thx for the warning but im using LTS unity 6
and im also not really planning to use much of the assets... its my first jam and im likely gonna keep it as simple as possible
which means, no assets at all that i didnt make, and the ones that i do make are likely just boxes orginized in a way for the player to hallucinate a shape out of
What are the allowed exports? PC, VR, MOBILE, AR ?
i think they need to be able to play it in the browser of itch, so webGL at least
WebGL...?? i dont remember the last time ayone did anything with webgl
it's great to directly publish games to itch.io with WebGL
thats just how itch wants it, and also its nice for people that dont want to download something right away randomly from someone they dont know
I am using 2022.3.62f2 which is the second latest release for educational use as I can check here https://unity.com/releases/editor/archive...
So I think we need to install 2022.3.62f3?
Ill refer you to this: #archived-jam-chat-20yrs2025 message
And just to add to my initial post, If the editor on the archive page does not have a "Security Alert" tag, it's good to use during this jam
good comms!
Thank you! I just cancelled installing 2022.3.62f3. Our team just finished other project with 2022.3.62f2, so I think we will keep this version for this jam ๐
Anyone else looking for a teammember?
I'm a Jack of all trades, but mostly skilled as an artist, and I can program the stuff no one wants to do, like Menu, save System, sound if needs be
mainly because I have all that stuff done in other projects and can easily reference those but still
Please use #1429766624403132416 for recruitment. Otherwise this channel will just flood with it.
fair enough, things are just segmented oddly here I've noticed
Question about the Most Creative Use of Anniversary Assets, Is it limited only to the Unity assets in the Unity 20th Anniversary Assets link? Or would it also include other Unity project assets like Lerpz, the hard hat guy and the lady from the 2D/3D Game kit?
2 hour left ^u^
does anyone know what the propper way is of importing all these .unitypackage files? im just dragging them in one by one rn but thats a bit annoying...
Iโm super excited for this game jam! ๐
Itโs been a while since Iโve had time to join one ๐
I donโt think I can pull off a full 3D game project in that time ๐
Are you guys planning a 2D or a 3D project?
i need a team because this is my first jam sooooo...
im planning on a 3d project but thats just cuz the mejority of my games are 3d made so it will literally be easier for me to do 3d instead of 2d as it would otherwise be more to figure out...
this is my first jam too, but im not doing it in team, imo i think im better off trying this out alone first and if i fail then thats that, but if i would be with a team, there are other vactors that can fail that would not be in my control, which might demotivate me for future events.
though i get your perspective too though, if you think you can fair well in a team its objectively better for progress.
This means we cannot partecipate in the jam from italy?
Hello, I only see "jam-chat" channel in the AnniversaryJam section. How do I see the others or get the Jammer20 role?
You can participate. You just can't win the contest
idk about the role, but if you right click the server icon in your server sidebar on the left, you should be able to check "Show all channels"
if you dont want that and just like some select few, go to id:browse
thanks
In most cases, if your project is open, you can double-click the file and it will open automatically in the editor. Sometimes my computer doesn't like me and I have import them directly by right-clicking in the Project area and selecting "Import Package > Custom Package...". ๐
and i assume i would need to repeat this for each file to import right? or can i select all at once in some way?
Brazil getting no love, dam
Yup! Rinse and repeat. Since each package has it's own files, it's good to do them one by one to ensure you can review the files being imported
alright thanks! and thats fair
someone want to be team?
can y'all postpone the jam by a day? i'm sleepy
mood
Hi
someone?
Check out the #1429766624403132416 Channel! You should be able to find a team or possible teammates there
thank you:)
I'm down
ok can we add each other
Hello
Do we need to make a webgl build
Or a exe file pacakage is fine too?
Which people will download?
Guys sorry for dumb question but where is theme gonna be revealed?
Youtube i think
On itc io site or on ds?
maybe also ds
thx
^ see above
It will be shared on the Game Jam Page (https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam) at the start of the jam but you can also watch the premiere live when it is announced on Youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qxvTW9hS4M)
Does anybody know how do i get the Jammer20 role?
I think you have to chat in the intro for that
You can check the itch io page to be sure
That's why I didn't get that role
"By joining the official Unity Discord and participating in the conversation in the Anniversary Jam "team-hangout" (and following the channel guidelines), you will be eligible to receive the special "Jammer20" role in Discord."
I have created a thread and joined the chat in the thread as well ๐คทโโ๏ธ
I dunno how i got it, i joined the server, went through the rules and joined the chat
@small mirage Is it okay to share a link to my UPM package that I'd like to encourage some people to use for the jam?
So if you're a solo dev you can't get the role?
That doesn't sound right
so if i already have a premade team do i need to post it in team-hangout?
I want the 20th anniversary badge too!
Oh, I already have it.
Sorry I haven't answered this earlier.
I'm not 100% familiar with Discord and how roles work. I need to chat with the team. But i think we'll be updating the verbage on how you get the role a bit later. Just need to confirm some deets.
We'll try to work to make sure that everyone who has participated in the jam and wants the role will get one.
Sorry for confusion.
I am not a solo dev ๐คทโโ๏ธ i have created the team thread in the team-hangout but i still don't have the role
I want the 20th anniversary badge
Sent you a DM in case y'all need any help ๐
livestream starts in 20 min?
Hey Everyone! Updates on the the Jammer20 Role
We plan to give everyone who has participated in the anniversary jam chat or forum the badge. It takes a bit of time because we have to do it manually but those those who have chatted here or in the forum will receive it in time.
It will be granted gradually over the next week.
Yup! Coming soon! Edit: Not a live stream but theme announcement video ๐
I'm looking forward to the jam!
so excited !
good
I tend to lurk but I'll reply to this for the sake of getting the role ๐

am so sad i canโt join the jamโฆ I was looking forward to it
Hype
On itch, in the edit game page you can select the admin tab. There you can add collaborators.
The game will appear in their dashboard as if they published it as well.
Anyone else nervous lol

@small mirage

Hey guys looking forward to the theme release. This is my first jam
there is a first for everything.
I even went to all the trouble of making a custom countdown video and then found out YT doesn't allow that...
dont worry mate, all good
advice: don't waste time over-perfecting stuff
Guys,what's the theme?
Thank you, will keep that in mind.
not announced fn

The theme is thymeless
The theme is Timeless!
we're cooked
wtf is that
so it seems i wasn't that far from my time comment
thyme as in the condiment? ๐ญ
Awesome theme!
i think its still a joke?
yes strange choice!
or where was it announced?
unity youtube channel
youtube, its "Timeless"
Unity 20th Anniversary Official Unity Game Jam Theme Announcement!
oh i just had to reload :/
Good luck everyone!
bruh i was still stuck in the premier
TIMELESS! Good luck guys!
lol goog guess
is that all we get? a word?
wait so they leaked the theme in the asset files?
completely unintentional
the folder is called timeless...
guys Iโve been looking for the theme everywhereโฆ could someone help me out. whatโs the theme?
timeless

Timeless
The theme is TIMELESS
The Official Theme is TIMELESS
amazing thanks guys
Nice graphic!
Almost there
What is the jam's deadline?
Awesome idea for a theme...Timeless!
Time to put that brain on overdrive.
Good luck everyone!โ๏ธ
i already wasted 10 minutes
I can't find these channels shown on itch anywhere ๐ค
I could say that what I am thinking of is timeless, amiright?
am I just blind?
Do we get an announcement too?
ah thank you! I thought the Game Jammers role would show it automatically
I missed it too, dont stress on it๐
at least wasn't just me then ๐
timeless? what does that mean??
Seem to be a game where player is not time and the game play dous not depend on time
Well, that's the question
Depends on your interpretation!
you can interpret a game jam theme however you want. there is no single definition of what it could mean in terms of your game
I have to sit with my thoughts and think.
how do i find an idea
Your brain, usually
just thought of a funny definition of timeless
you do not use Time.deltaTime in your code
Hello, quick question, as the instructions mention, we should use the latest unity version. To confirm, is that 6000.2.10f1?
its any that has the security patch
So it'd be good with 6000.0.58f2?
https://unity.com/releases/editor/archive here you can see list of versions, its any of the ones that have security patch
just to confirm, can i use paid assets?
as long as you have the license i believe
So long as you own them then yes!!
fuck, i am dumb, do y'all have any advice on how to find good ideas
man that theme was such a curveball for me, I'm stumped lol
same
seriously
Think of games you played, or simple mechanics you've done and make it a tiny version of that.
i have some fun ideas brewing, not sure if i could do it in 2 days tho
trying to think of something that isn't so insanely out of my ability, and can complete within the weekend
planing out the entire game that can be done in 48h is insanely hard
keep the scope in check, jam games are not "complete" games but more of verticle slice of an idea based on theme
thats what I mean, the idea has to be in scope
ChatGPT is great if you know how to use it
It's a brainstorming partner, not a slave for ideas
stop thinking for a second, let your brain open up all those clusters that it closed off a little ago to give you space to think way to hard about this.
does sacrificing a new born kid work ?
depends how new
somtimes, but only with the right altar
shut
dont tell us
tell your game design document
I think good or bad ideas are subjective anyway. If you like it, do it
5 hours work ?
maybe an ancient artifact that is used by generations and generations and still usefull
Just Do It
Hey everyone. I was looking on the submission rules, and along with the other requirements, it says "All necessary game files and builds for players to play your game MUST be a part of the game files on your itch page. Users should not be asked to download additional files not packaged with your game build." Does anyone know if this means that its needs to be in- browser on itch io? I see that theres a bunch of Windows games that can be downloaded straight from itch io. Woudl this qualify as being packaged with my game build? Basically Im wondering if it needs to be in-browser or not. Thanks.
Someone here said earlier that WebGL games (in browser) are preferred, since executable games can contain malware
it just says dont make the game download additional files or require additional files other than what is downloadable in your ith io page
my brain hurts, i have no good ideas, help, all the time i have good ideas but this theme really limits me honestly
both Browser and exe works, but browser gets more plays as it is easy and risk free, many will be not willing to download stuff
like i said, stop thinking about it for a little bit, relax, take ur mind of it for like 5 min and then try again, repeat until you get anything.
anything that you get you should write down for later to review, even if its just single words
ok
Cool, good to know. Thanks guys. Last question : Does anyone know if the judges will have access to a Quest 3 or VR headset? I might pursue an in-browser VR build.
What channel would I use to ask a question about data between scenes?
what they primary mean is that if your game needs additional downloads ex roblox or core then it's not okay
Both are allowed in the jam however just like others said WebGL is preffered! for safety reasons โค๏ธ
I suggest you to go for non VR too, as more reach
Hey Everyone! Just wanted to let you know that the #๐โtroubleshooting is officially open.
If you are running into issue in the Unity engine or need general assistance throughout the jam, that's the place to post.
We will have some awesome Unity employees trying their best to support throughout the jam and we'll be monitoring there to try and support.
Pumped to see what y'all build and best of luck!
loki mentioned?
holy shit a shitpost has given me the greatest idea ever
your welcome
jams are great way to learn, get some tutorials on I guess
there you go, i should start charging people for my peak advice
what do you even require
what do you mean
no i was talking about my own shitpost
you'll find some good get started projects from unity
an illegal immigrant never being caught by ICe
I can't say bruh?! What kinda automod rule is that
could have contained something that may have looked like something else you did not mean
Please use full sentences
- The bot message you just ignored
bruh was the full sentence
like how the word "flag" almost is the f slur.
it's just useless noise and doesn't contribute to the conversation in any meaningful way
ah yeah that also makes sense, anti spam like method
all I can think about changing timescale mechanics and time loops
where are the original ideas???
hey question, can i use old projects?
don't limit yourself to the obvious
your take on an idea will make it your "original"
no*
i dont think its against the rules to copy minor things from old projects, but a full old project with a lot of things already done may get disqualified as the spirit of a game jam is to start at the same time everyone else does
the problem is not finding ideas, its making it doable in this timeframe
Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/LofiCinema
We often think of creativity as the need to invent something completely original. But the truth is, great art isnโt about invention โ itโs about interpretation.
In this video essay, we explore how some of the most iconic films and stories werenโt born from groundbreaking ideas, but from perso...
Even in a jam don't overcomplicate things, think of a small idea and make solid gameplay loop with nice feel and look juice๐คท
buenas
about this.. then what version unity that i really need to use?
any version that doesnt have the security alert
@high dove Is it possible to make it public if you wanted to?
I'm guessing not since it will contain the anniversary assets
thats actually a good question... also, i think you will be fine to even if the assets should not be public, but then you would need to add them to your gitignore (assuming you would use git)
i personally wouldn't commit anything to a public repository you don't have the license to distribute, but whether it's allowed will likely be up to the license
fair, do we know what licence it applies anyway?
๐
Hi
Isn't those assets free and public on the asset store?
thought about doing that, but like if you ignore the assets then the project will be broken if anyone tries to clone and use the repo
Gotcha thanks.
The assets did not come with any licenses packaged with them
yeah i just had the same dialog with myself and did not ignore them, but im not making the repo public yet anyway so if it does get confirmed that im not allow to republicize them the repo wont be public or i will ignore them afterall...
Can't ignore them afterwards unless you do some fancy git magic I think. Cause even if you remove them from the main branch, the files will still exist in an accessible commit history branch
which is usually strange indeed, but that also sometimes means that the person who put it there was permitted to put it up unlicensed, and now we are at a weird split, cuz now they can either be unlicensed and free to use or unlicensed and all right reserved, and if the latter is the case, we are not even allow to look at them...
thats a fair point, but you can do some git magic that gets rid of that even in the history
but thats usually not recommended as its a pain in the a hole
haha yup
Would love an answer from @small mirage or any other Unity Dev on this subject!
i asked in #๐โtroubleshooting
Never used it before. Now I wonder is it an option for the game jam?
You gotta upload it on itch
usually you would just build it to a local folder, then zip that entire folder and upload the zip to you own itch page
hey all ๐ I work on the core engine team (with @twin flax !) ans will be around intermitently to help out as well
Yeah, I uploaded webgl builds before. I just though maybe since this is official jam from Unity maybe this might be an option too. But maybe I will try it anyway. Just curious how it works.
can you come up with ideas? ๐คฃ
Official Unity Jam, still hosted on Itch and community voting will be on itch
ah yeah fair, that would be funny, i also never seen that button before...
Hi Penelope! Wait... why does the sky look like that
I think they added this in Unity 6 for WebGL, for Unity Play (the website to host webGL Games by unity)
ah thats pretty cool
@gleaming osprey #๐โtroubleshooting message
Well, we're in it now. See you in 2 days. ๐ซก
ball x pit but the arena is a circle
vampire survivors but you play as the monsters
chess roguelike where taking a piece means you have to give a power to the other player
chess but its an mmo?
sounds reasonable for a jam
still analyzing ideas
I want to try to think out of the box this time
who's making his own assets/using the ones they made for the jam/ mixed?
I'm not sure yet
HELP ME I NEED AN IDEA OH GOD I SUCK AT FINDING IDEAS
floppy fish?
Take the old robot character and make a walking sim that traverses through the history of Unity.
how do i find good ideas, i have no idea appearing at all and on the rare case i do it absolutely looks like steaming hot garbage
and i only ever made one game, and its not even that good, its just pong but worse
everything is in the execution ๐ you can make a game about mega bonking and make it a great success!
dont overthink
Make a puzzle game where you fix clocks
Lmaoo
my game idea is that you play as a detective investigating a murder and you can interact with the clues and see them "rewind" to when everything went down
idk I think I might be overcomplicating this
Ladies and gentlemen, I have found my idea. time to complete task: 105 minutes
make a game where you lost your pocket watch and finding it
Do a game based in Alice in wonderland but you are the white rabbit
bad ideas create brain conections that lead to good ideas xD
Hey guys, what are you using in your game? I am using this opportunity to build an epic battler game, trying to build my own ECS-lite system. Just got a custom pixel animator working!
just to double-check: we don't have to do anything to do with the unity anniversary, just the theme "timeless", but the anniversary stuff is for an extra category?
curious about this too!
Themes don't have to be literally taken.
Timeless can mean anything - nostalgic, repetitiveness, empty
This is harder than i thought
It's must easier if you just come up with a game you want to make from a mechanics standpoint. A puzzle, a point click adventure, a platformer. Then fit the theme around that.
It can even be twisted and become Less time
it literally revolves around time
fuuuuuuuck i really need to find an original idea
I am gonna build a prototype first, then mess around with timeScale and see how I can build it in as a mechanic
Hey folks! Should i be opening up a post in https://discord.com/channels/489222168727519232/1430582118165119108 for my team entry as well, aside from the itchio profile?
What should we focus on for the game? As in, what should be the finished product, uploaded for the game jam?
There's no way I can finish the game with the entire idea and plot developed, but I'm not sure if I should focus on the story and underdeliver on the mechanics or the other way around
I've made this scene so far for my game
For jams, I like to use the MVP (Minimal viable product) concept. What is the small chunk/vertical slice of gameplay, narrative, visuals design, etc. I can put in my game to make it clear to the player what the game is about and what it could become. Doesn't have to be a Full game experience but enough for me to go "Cool! I get this idea. I wish I could play more!!".
Feel free to upload your project to Unity Play! That would be super cool but for the game jam you ONLY have to upload to itch
So instead of developing the whole story / plot, just give them a little taste of the beginning and focus on mechanics instead?
Also, what are the restrictions on NSFW content in the submitted game?
No, NSFW games in this jam. Sorry.
Yeah but where's the limit?
What a goofy fellow
is that an alien shrimp
it's a goofy fellow
it fits some genres
Check out the Contest eligibility section on the game jam page (https://itch.io/jam/unity-20th-anniversary-game-jam). that'll give you more guidance
Does bringing your characters to a evil underworld break any rule?
I did, but it's still a little vague
Like the screenshots someone sent above. Some might consider them NSFW, blood, underwear, etc.
What's the limit on gore? Is blood allowed? Are organs? Explicit death scenes / animations?
What's the limit on indecent / sexual content? Underwear allowed? Sexual jokes said by characters, GTA style?
The rules say that the game should not contain unlawful activities. What does that mean? I can't teach players how to cook meth but can I put them in the shoes of a criminal?
I'm not tryna be picky I just.. I'd like to know ๐
My game idea is a half life kinda game with machines n stuff but also quite a bit of gore and fighting so.. there's that
Those are some good questions. My encouragement would be to check out some projects from other Game James like the GMTK game jam (https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2025/entries) and see the range of projects there and kind of see where they fall. It's a bit hard to quantify what the limit is. Games with blood may be fine but if it's excessive that might cross the line. Hard to give a definitive answer here. sorry
Well take it as personal challenge. How can I take my current concept and make it more "kid friendly". You could learn a lot from the experience
I believe the plan is to highlight some of the games(winners?) during Unite. So i would keep it family friendly
I really liked my horror fighting machines game though ๐ญ
Don't let that stop you though.
For context, my game idea is techinally horror, but it's more on the FNAF level then say a gorey horror game
I don't want to spoil anything else, other then I have inspiration
We're actually running a dedicated Livestream to showcase the winners on November 25th! So the week after Unite. We need a bit of time to judge all of the Unity Asset games ๐คฃ
Ah!! To avoid confusion:
-Game Jam Recap Livestream is November 13!
-Game Jam Winners Announcement is November 25!
Ya'll get two livestreams on this!
How can I see the rest of the AnniversaryJam channels?
You guys are soo ahead, i am just getting started.
If you go to the Channels and Roles section up here, you can add the entire Anniversary Jam category and see all the channels!
do you guys use any framework for planning games?
Thank you!
I thought I had a good idea but turns out its lame
I've been using Codecks.io for a few years now. And just Trello before that
I normally use Milanote to organize my ideas. And then use paint or google slides for a basic layout / flow chart of the gameplay or progression. Then just get to creating stuff!
I use Canva. It works well with my iPad and PC.
for random sketching i'm a big fan of tldraw.com
I'll also use figma to do design/layout stuff, but probably overkill for a jam
but the whiteboard app in figma is also very nice and collaborative as well
nice way to plan out features with people!
canva for the win. mostly during a game jam, i usually avoid any big software / framework
I use a standard GDD, and just put down my ideas
Yes, I am on canva right now, trying to polish my idea before jumping into Unity.
I was more interested in the process rather than the platform ๐
uhh games gotta be uploaded to WebGL, right?
one thing I usually do that is silly is that I write out the gameplay idea as a big paragraph, and for words that are things that need to be implemented I make them all caps. so regarding the roguelike chess game I mentioned above it would be something like:
- PLAYERS move PIECES on a random BOARD
- When capturing a PIECE, players can exchange the piece in a MARKET for a POWER
- POWERS make the opponent stronger
This helps start to shape the work of the stuff I'm trying to build, while also acting as a rough guideline of the rules and game itself
ideally web builds, but exes are okay
if you're starting out, I'd say just start building for web as soon as possible
even with an empty project - try to build at least a few times a day so you aren't trying to debug your build at submission deadline
I design from the bottom up. Staring with just a single mechanic first. Then I'll think about playstyles/camera angles. Finally locking in art style/story
web builds are pretty sturdy surprisingly, but the compile times are quite big so don't think you're compiling and submitting in the last few minutes
I find dev builds do seem to compile much quicker so make sure you're using them to debug
a lot of brainstorming and then just removing everything and keeping one core idea that is fun. I did a presentation using a game I did at a game jam as a case study, if it helps: https://www.canva.com/design/DAGmeKOfDlA/XST251B_0EKX1T3zbRSWZw/edit
yeah I think a key part of a jam is to focus on basically a single mechanic and build around that
I just updated the Game Jam Page with some additional detiails in the "Submision Eligibility" section to hopefully help everyone. Also, I plan to slightly rearrange the game jam page so Submission guidelines are more easy to see/find:
"Submissions can be in WebGL or packaged executable files (an executable file that can be run on Windows, Mac and/or Linux). If you do build to Linux, we ask that you also make a Windows and/or Mac build. And if possible, we encourage teams to include a WebGL build on their itch page (but this is not mandatory); WebGL builds on your itch game page increase accessibility to your game and the likelihood that your game will be played by other jammers!"
Also, I made a note about Linux as a Linux only projects will be inaccessible to large amount of participants and we would like to maximize the opportunity for everyone to play your games.
haha just saw that and thought I was getting mad
could've sworn that I didn't read that before
but thanks!
haha! You aren't mad! Definitely just made the add. ๐
Anyone else struggling with 6.2? Just had my 3rd crash in 2 hours. Hardly have ever crashed before.
Not me I always use LTS version can't update unity weekly it will hurt my project progress
just to dovetail off this as well based on my own participation in past jams, I think the uptake difference of games with web builds vs. downloads is something like 85% increased engagement.
feel free to take it to #๐โtroubleshooting ! happy to help if there is anything specific
I think my gorilla has a headache...
Im making time โ
I need a sanity check - is the interpretation of "timeless" as "out of time" valid or nah? I don't mean in the sense that I'll get disqualified, just like does it make sense?
My moto is, if you think the interpretation works, then it works. No need to overthink the theme!
And as a sanity check imo "Out of time" is 100% valid!
haha thats awesome! Reminds me a bit of the creatures from Spore
You don't have anything to worry about regarding disqualification. The theme is merely a suggestion. The contest is about creative use of the given assets.
I thought it was the opposite - that the theme has to be followed, but the given assets are optional for an extra category?
Themes are extremely open ended. Don't overthink it.
Technically everything is optional. The prizes are for "Most Creative Use of the Anniversary Assets" and that's it. I'm sure sticking to theme will help among the judges though. But yea, don't overthink it.
Ah okay, thanks guys!
It looks it could give others some headache if it headbutt others... XD
definitely
Hi, is there a # or jam-chat for Unity/spatial.io toolkit somewhere?
not here. pretty sure spatial has its own discord server if you need help
this is my first game jam and im doing this all on my own lol this is hard but really fun
Is chatting here must required to receive the Jammer20 role? (Sorry for bad English)
I don't think its required but it will help since adding roles will be a manual process by the admins
First Game Jam and actually first ever game made without following a tutorial just using my notes. Been great watching others on twitch / YouTube.
Timeless
I am an experienced Unity gameplay programmer looking for a team to join on this game jam that I don't want to miss.
This will be my first game jam and hopefully first game i can finish, still new to everything game making so it will be a challenge for me but im excited. No idea if i will even get it done in time but the journey is where the fun is
Hello. I'm not sure if this is the right place, but I have few questions. Can I use plugins like Playmaker and third party character controllers (not game template, just controller)?
Good to see fellow Guardian here
Always good to see fellow Guardians out in the wild, Never know where you will stumble into them
Has anyone tried to make a game on HDRP? I wanted to, but I couldn't solve the problem with pink textures, it takes a lot of time manually.
I was able to get root motion working with the provided animations! Also I'm able to toggle sneaking with animation layers! This Jam is officially a success for me, since I learned something new
You can use anything that you have the license for. Free or paid assets. I'm using the Starter Assets Character controllers
Window -> Rendering -> Render Pipeline Converter can convert your materials automatically
I used automatic conversions, but they didn't help either.
Yup! You are good to
Everyone I'm so stoked to see y'all jamming away and extra special welcome to all you first timers!! Game jams are some of the best things you can do to help improve your game dev skills and I'm so proud of you all! ๐ฅน Obviously I can't participate in the jam myself but I'm gonna be devving right along with you this weekend on my own personal game! GO JAMMERS GO!

Working solo as I have a lot of health problems and dont want to let anyone down if I have to stop. Working on a very silly Game Dev tomagotchi where you feed the developer coffee, clean up bugs and keep them motivated with a store of items. Very early so far
Everyone knows a dev is an organism that feeds on coffee and produces code ๐
Make sure to check out the #1429766624403132416 . Might find a good team to join
Most of the art is done! Some minor elements tomorrow and then unity, unity, unity! :D That will be a crazy weekend.
Wait...you did those all today!?!!
damn someone got skill
Yep! I started around 6h ago :D
But for today it is really time to sleep haha :D See you tomorrow everyone! :)
I just keep getting same errors in mine im going to break something XD
Just cant attach my scripts so now its going through trying to figure out what i did wrong
We've remaked the teddy bear a bit hehe
his parents are also on the way! (maybe some other creatures too but i guess you'll have to wait for us to finish the game to see them hehe)
I can't find a good team to join at the moment. Or at least I haven't heard from anyone who I can join with.
I dont know how much help id even be to a team XD i wouldnt want to slow anyone down
I feel im too new at stuff to be much help, im using this as a challenge to learn new things XD probably not smartest but here we go
We revamped Penelope
That's so impressive!!
So cute!! ๐ฅน
after 4 hours of making my scripts, i realised Unity wasn't doing the compiling it had always been doing when i save a script and it just wouldn't at all when i was working on project no matter what i did so i had to make a fresh project and start again... at least now after a bit of test it is so now its just making scripts again
WOW!! Penelope for a new generation!!
Oh man, that's a big bummer Tomz! Remember that if you run into any challenges you can ping us in the troubleshooting channel and we can try to help you out! If that starts happening again, there are some great suggestions in this reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/1gj7lsc/unity_doesnt_seem_to_compile_my_scripts_its_been/
Will deffinetly check that out for next time, Thank you ๐
remember to sleep people, remindng you cuz i just forgot the time and now its 5am...
good night!!
Im lucky its only about to hit 3pm was 4am when this started and I was dead asleep
Hey all, so are people from Quebec banned from entering a project into the jam, or just banned from "winning" the contest?
This is gonna be fun!
From winning
Thank you! A lot of people are confused on that here ๐ซ
There're So many talented here
Timeless Genre: Retro Shmup ๐ค ๐ถโ๐ซ๏ธ The Time Crystal ๐ Jammin
Anyone else still looking for a team?
Retro Shmup definitely would be timeless
Hm... How about time manipulation for 2D platformer? Sounds good for me.
man, i wish things are real
Are there gonna be boo scripts in this museum? ๐
Now that you said it
This is actually coming together so much better than i hoped, If i can get my terrain to be just what i want I then I can start adding the details ๐
Oh my god, that's incredible. I am using Penelope as my main character as well, but tbh, the original look is all i need for my artstyle
Then theres me not even got a character model or assets XD
I got terrain ๐ Many scripts
Im glad we can edit the assets to fit our need because i got some ideas that i hope i can perform in time
Fun fact, I have the honor of working with the guy who removed it from the engine ๐
Ahaha amazing! I remember when Boo left, and I feel like collectively a lot of devs were like
Now when unityscript went away..
haha that one stung a bit more
Yeah it sure did. Unityscript was my first language and I really resisted learning C# because I thought it would be too hard. ๐ But I still only identified as an artist back then!
awesome job, was thinking about cleaning em up too.
I'm still looking for a team. Are there still any teams available for a programmer???
I am going all out with all original assets ๐
I just update to Unity 6 from 2023. I notice there is not Scene Gizmo that i use to have in previous version of Unity. From where can i turn it on?
I am talking about this one:
Found it
Made some great progress tonight, doesn't look like much, but it's the start of an incremental game about keeping clocks running in order to escape time prison!
Anyways, heading to bed. Good luck everyone!
the clocks look so alive ๐ฅณ ๐
dotween goes crazy
that sounds kinda fun
Mine is manipulating objects by weaving time. More to come cant spoil it all ๐
Sounds super intriguing! Excited to hear more ๐
a sneak peak on a enemy
haha, I'd have so much fun with him in a game ๐ฅฐ
Hey !
Do you think I can use Learning Template from Unity for the Jam ? The "Get Started with Unity" one
When you decide to go with a different approach for terrain because you decided to change aspects of your game
๐
and now you need to change quite a bit
Yes I think you can, as
The use of pre-existing code and art assets are allowed but you must have the legal right to use those assets.
And templates are fine as they are provided as "starting point" projects
*just jam tales *
Thank you !
I was not sure because I coun't find information about the legal right
I'm not sure, but I think they have the same licence as that of Unity Companion License or Asset Store License
Progress on our island curse game, what do you think?
Anyone know how to make a texture be rendered with colour there but also see through? Making a cube world and trying to figure water into it
yeah i do
with a material setup like this:
might help to tell what render pipeline you are using
just 3d built in render
then its ok with transparent material type, and the colour transparency determines the glass type look of the thing.
I dont have Rendering mode showing on my inspector...
Do you think a block type world with non block objects would look stupid XD I have an idea for one thing but its changing the states of an object and want to apply this to some assets of Unity
Good Morning Vietnam Meme
Music: Fortunate Son - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40JmEj0_aVM
some good old floating appearing steps here
noice
You can change the surface type from opaque to transparent, probably just different Unity versions
love the art style
Wooow so trippy ๐
thanks!
A little sneak peak from my side. Going all in with Unity's original assets.
This cube is one of the ingredients for infinite energy ๐
This is URP, not built-in.... Change the surface type to transparent; then you can set your base color with lower alpha for it. You can also look into some water shaders for urp for better water, there are few free ones on asset store
That's cool
Woah, that looks awesome!
one day left ;-;
A little bit of progress made last night, looking forward to getting more done today!
oh wow quite literally losing time
super creative and cool interpretation
this looks like it's going to make a great rage game
it'll hopefully be fun with too much rage ๐
Good Morning, 6am here, time for coffee and development.
whats behind the door
another door

Secret information
Who else has the Beats going as they go? I got a hype playlist going XD
At this point, you'll need to make the mechanic beyond simple
night bar, v1
uploaded my full plans for the jam to #1436687148433674423
any suggestions would be appreciated!
alright i made good progress today we get loops and etc
My child seems to be deciding whether to sleep tonight or not.... like plz stay asleep i have things to do
Me trying to figure out getting it to work how i want but it just won't and so now idk if I can even use my mechanic
sometimes a rest and a fresh head can really help solve those issues!
I mean, I've got a mechanic per se, but I'm unsure how to fit it into gameplay
especially with the lesser time I've got now
looking good so far!
Thats pretty much what I am doing atm. Im on a VC with a friend watching random videos just to relax before i jump back in
Im still trying to figure out fitting mine in... I know what I want to do but i dont know how it will fit in the gameplay entirely
But I finally got a terrain roughly done
Now I need to actually get my player model in, Make the spawn, Assets that work with mechanic
Im guess I dont really need a story persay, I doubt I will technically get a full thing done but I just hope to get the Main part of game actually working and things reacting how i want so I have something to submit
Went to sleep for a little bit and see y'all are cooking!
!! Keep it up y'all. Love seeing what y'all are creating! ๐๐ฟ
I have a question : if I use the 20th anniversary assets, can I apply shaders and distort them a bit to make it fit a certain cartoon style ?
pretty sure we can do what every we want to with them to suit our games
How do i stop Pink textures when imported.... I have textures linked to materials where i can but it isnt rendering them
you need to check if the materials correspond to the render pipeline and change the shader if they don't. you can also convert them automatically
How do i convert auto?
Progress so far, Got the "Fake" Baked Animations in to be able to smash the meshes and pixel look
ty, backing up before i do it XD
damn 50,000 files in a project XD
you can usually skip the Libraries folder when doing a backup, that is just something generated by Unity and it will generate automatically if it's gone
I was just thinking 90% of it would be the libraries
exactly
You need to use the gitignore if you're going to be committing anything.
auto didnt work so now im manually doing it all XD
Only think I dont know how to fix are the PolymaskTint and PBRMaskTint
Are there screenshots available for the official assets, so that you don't have to load them all into a project to see what's included?
gm
