Agreed, I cannot detect any sound from the piano. And the trumpet does not sound like a trumpet. Nor the violin. The microphone sounds .. hard to describe, two quick notes and hard to make out if it is voice or not. The drums go one for quite a while.

I'm guessing some of these sounds are just stand-in place-holders until they find a sound they like better.

We have a packed beta for you this week, 21.45, on Steam, Android, and iOS. It has Beyond Episode 21, improvements to the Good Vibrations event, Neural Network, and new Logit prizes.

Beyond 21 - Find Earth’s Twin - Follow Semblance’s search for an Earth-like exoplanet with 3 new exoplanet generators, 8 trait cards, and 6 achievements. Note that this is a very early beta for Episode 21, so there is a lot of placeholder art - many icons and textures are not yet final.

The Beyond Jump has been turned back on, so once you have played Episode 21, future updates will reset your progress in the Beyond to the end of Episode 20. Your Darwinium will not be reset.

Note: Episode 21 and the Good Vibrations music Event are not yet translated. To play the Beyond or the Event you will need to set your language to English and restart the game.

Good Vibrations Event updates:

• You can now tap for songs in the tree view once you have unlocked the instrument generator.
• Updated tooltips for nodes and generators.
• Updated music that plays in tree view.
• Added sound effect for piano in garden.

Cells support, some early feedback. And now that I think about it, this might be generic for all of Beyond, and maybe even other parts of CtS, but I only thought about it now. How do each of the objectives help Semblance towards the overall goal? For example, in Episode 21, how does ranking up Neptune help Semblance find another earth-like planet? How does ranking up Alpha Centauri help? I'm trying to connect the dots between the in-game mini objectives with the overall storyline of the episode theme.

One of our team was just asking this exact question yesterday during a playtest! Using the same example, even!

The answer is that we try to line them up narratively, though often we can't. The main criteria is that the pace is good: we pick goals that will have the right cost for where your production is likely to be. We prefer goals that deal with more recent generators, and try not to go back more than a few episodes. However, missions like the one you mention are the exceptions. Sometimes, there IS a connection!

Exoplanets get compared to planets in our solar system a lot. Awohali was a Warm Neptune, and Enaiposha is sometimes described as "Neptune-like" or a "mini-Neptune"... so we decided that could be a good early mission.

As Semblance is learning to model other solar systems, sometimes she wants us to go back and improve the simulation of our own, or of other stars, because it's relevant to the new models!

I've been chewing on this, and I go back and forth. Yes, the nodes make sense and they are interesting; overall, it feels more accurate. Personally, I still want to dive deeper into the mechanics of how sound works (specifically, the math and layering of harmonics), but I am wondering if that is outside the scope of the event. Part of the reason I want to focus on how exactly harmonics work is that the background image for the event has all these interesting sound waves, yet once we get past the Harmonics node, we don't ever really come back to how all these sounds layer on top of each other (I don't think), and how some layering sounds good (you touch on this with "The color of sound"), while other layers don't appeal so much.

Maybe I'm looking for an example of harmonics - like, when we pluck a guitar string, what exactly are we hearing? (piano keys are more complicated by far, but also interesting)

Lastly, I think I felt like the event could use a node that answers the question "what is music?". @vague basalt, thank you, seriously. Your feedback has been incredibly helpful and I'm glad the nodes feel more accurate and interesting. It's true we don't dive as deep into harmonics towards the later half of the tree, and that's mostly because there's so much to cover and we wanted to find a balance that had a little bit of everything, while also maintaining the single arc of where music was and where it is today. We agreed with your thoughts though that there definitely wasn't enough of the science and harmonics before, so we did our best to sprinkle it in and expand further wherever it seemed fit.
And as for that question of "what is music?", I think that's super interesting. The team actually had a discussion about that, because we realized there are multiple ways to answer that question, and that shaped the direction the tree took. Now that we have that shared understanding amongst the team, I think I can find a place to discuss it in the tree 🙂

This was one of the earliest ideas we included in the tree, how Pythagoras believed in Music of the Spheres, and how it wasn't true but is similar to the fact that all of these planets are giving off frequencies. Beta 21_51
-New Garden Look. we're particularly interested in your feedback on the new look of the garden.
-Changed Music in Tree view
-Updated Tooltips
-New Rhythm and Pitch Nodes

This beta doesn't have new beyond E21 content and we disabled the beyond reset on this update.

**Note: **Episode 21 and the Good Vibrations music Event are not yet translated. To play the Beyond or the Event you will need to set your language to English and restart the game.
