I guess it's a question of familiarity as much as anything; if you've not done STEM stuff recently then scientific notation can seem a bit arbitrary/unfamiliar, but the only real difference is how big a step you're counting in (in thousands for each successive "-illion" vs in tens for each successive E##)

Tbh even being familiar/comfortable with scientific notation and using it regularly for other things, I do tend to leave most games on the custom "-illion" setting, or the "M B T aa ab ac etc" notation that quite a few games seem to have adopted lol, it just feels nicer somehow. Maybe it's the milestone feeling of hitting a new multiple of 1000 that does it?
