For example take sirius, the brightest star in the night sky

Its Apparent magnitude is -1.46. Thats a little bit dimmer than jupiter

But its absolute magnitude is +1.4 so around saturn’s brightness

( turns out absolute is a distance of 10 parsecs )

Its a very arbitrary scale

Its based on the brightness of Vega, meant to be 0, actually 0.03 though
