If you beta tested previously and went back and forth between prod and beta you will have a corrupt save. If you go to your save manager and go to local backups you can try downloading some of those to see if it fixes the issue

@shrewd rampart Basically, you'll go through Civ up to about Rover before you'll be able to buy Stonehenge, which opens up the second batch of nodes for Stone Age. Each ancient generator has a second round of upgrades, which are unlocked by buying the trophy attached to each generator. (Catalhoyuk for Neolithic, Ziggurat of Ur for Bronze Age, etc.)
TL;DR: Yes, buying upgrades for ancient generators is a good idea!
