@agile mortar I'm not a dev but have some familiarity with computer arithmetic systems. What's being displayed is a symptom of a bug. 'NaN' means "Not a Number" and is the name for a particular bit pattern that represents the results of undefined mathematical operations such as division by zero, log(0), etc. The defining standard is IEEE 754 and you can read all the gory details (and trust me, they're incredibly gory!) in, for example, Wikipedia. To make this a bit more concrete, I'll give an incredibly simplified version of what a 64 bit floating point number looks like under IEEE 754. There are 10 bits for the exponent, 53 bits for the mantissa (called 'significand' in the standard) and a sign bit. This allows a range of approx 2x10^-308 to 2x10^308. There is also a representation for infinity where all exponent bits are 1 and all significand bits are 0. An all 1's exponent with at least one non-zero significand bit represents NaN, so there are multiple possible NaN representations (~ 2^53 of them in a 64 bit system!)

So there are two ways that NaN can show up. The first is legitimately as a result of attempting an undefined mathematical operation. This should always be checked for when executing an operation that could potentially return NaN. The second way is corruption of a number such that it accidentally just happens to match one of the many NaN representations.

@wraith terrace So let me first just say that if you're trying to do math with a computer, there's tradeoffs. If you have 64 bits, a straightforward representation is as an integer in the range +/- 2^63 which is about +/- 9x10^18. That works great for a lot of problems, but if you need more range, you can use a computer version of "scientific notation" where you give up some precision for range. That's what floating point does.

Regardless, there's always going to be the question as to what the computer returns when you ask it to divide by 0, take the square root of a negative number, and so on. It's got to return something and there's been general agreement throughout the world of computer math that the IEEE 754 standard is a very well thought out one and so if you ask for the square root of -4, you're going to get NaN. So it's not about a value being too big (if it's just too big, the computer will return infinity), but that the answer simply does not exist.

Just following up on a couple of the math comments.

There are other systems out there for representing numbers in computers. The language Smalltalk has what are called Bignums which work by just appending more bits. If working with a 64 bit system, just append another 64 bits and then another and another. You can represent insanely large numbers with full precision but doing so is slower than using IEEE 754 Floating Point because the CPU has hardware built in to handle that.

It's also quite possible to represent complex numbers which comprise a 'real' and 'imaginary' part where the 'imaginary' part is the portion involving the square root of negative numbers. If doing physics or electronics or a whole host of other math related programming, you just use the appropriate code that still uses the built in FPU (Floating Point Unit) in the CPU but just keeps track of the real and imaginary parts and implements the rules for combining those numbers.
