It's just as in real life, always go for "the best bang for bucks". Sometimes you need to count a bit of a next milestone of a planet / moon is worth the time saving for it or just investing it in the 2nd best. In the end the goals you need to achieve per lvl are a good guidance to know what to upgrade.

I'd say it'd be a purchasable game
i might be going way too far with that one but there will be an alternative: give the game an exclussive dlc (only purchasable if the game stayed free) simulation/artifacts that would give darwinium instead
when it comes to simulation each time you'd complete a rank you'd collect darwinium / when its artifact make it produce randomly between 1 - 4 per 1,5 hours since you could make more of these in the future
also maybe as an alternative maybe as a boost option, turn the comets in the main sim planet garden not give a 30 sec boost since its useless to a free darwinium, its already quite rare so yknow would be nice
actually i've not come up with an alternative so an alternative is that nothing gets changed i guess
