Ultimate audio trolling experience
But well, if anyone ever stumbles upon this convo.
- The cheapest and acceptable modern audio interface is 49$ (M-Audio M-Track Solo)
- The cheapest acceptable modern XLR condenser microphone is 24$ (Vigilant VA92). Dynamic is 20$ (XM8500)
- The cheapest reliable USB microphone is 45$ (Seiren Mini)
- If you try to cram the whole topology of an interface inside a slightly longer XLR housing, you get turbo cringe
Lol
I buy once things
Which is why I bought a hq mic
And the cable is shit but I can upgrade
Compare to having to buy a whole new mic
The best way to spend 85 bucks in this case would be buying the Seiren Mini, proper accessories for it and ghetto treatment
Or just a better USB mic and a boom arm
Cos it's not really the mic that will be a bottleneck in most people's sound
By the way, do anyone here has experience with the moondrop chu, I'm looking for an iem (I never owned one before btw) and my favourite fat Asian crinacle made a video about them q while back, and I want to know if they are good enought to replace my dy240 pro that I use for day to day task, or if there is like a big flaw or whatever, because graphs says that it's better, but tuning is not all (and I have no idea how to read the others audio graphs, like the water fall one, and crinacle said they are useless, and has the dumb viewer of his audio dreams, I just assumed he was right, and idk how to read the other ones) so idk, is it good enought to replace my DT ?
(And also, I'm looking for a neutral 300-500-ish$ open back or not headphones to replace my actual sundara, but only if it's actually really better, like enought better to pay a whole new headphone, I use it for content consumption, gaming, music and video editing)
i have a psvr2 are there any head phones that are bone conduction earphones that can connect to it ?
You can just connect whatever you want to it, it support Bluetooth (their dirty headphones are Bluetooth, so take whatever you want, it should be ok, but it's better if it's via jack, because there is two on it, and wired is better than wireless
Chu was made obsolete by Truthear dropping a bunch of stuff like Zero and Hola
DT240 Pros aren't anything special so they're not hard to replace but maybe not with IEMs
Cos IEMs sound like, you know, IEMs
Also, as mid as Sundara is, replacing it with something in about the same price range is definitely more of a sidegrade
So don't waste your money
You can exchange with someone and get a better headphone this way or sell the Sundara and then get a better headphone but like
Sidegrade
Yes, I know, it was my first "hi fi" headphones, and I only bought open back after it, so in public places, I was stuck with them
Can you send links to buy them in Europe ? I never really know where to buy headphones, because like my sundara I bought it on headphones.com and I had to ask a friend in Canada to ship it to me, it's quite a mess
It's why I insisted on the "if it's worth buying a whole new headset", at what kind of price range will there be a sizable upgrade ? (I mostly use them to listen to deezer)
I never had one before
Hello again, How much would it cost for a good (but not stupid expensive) pair of ears on a stand to record frequency response graph ?
Should be on Amazon
ok
I never had iem before, so I prefer to buy a budget thing that is still pretty representative of the "middle high hend" to know if I like them or not, instead of throwing away hundreds in something I'm not sure I will even like
Which zero ?
Ok, I thought you where talking about truthear zero, that is a bit to U shaped for me
Same with the salnote,
Truthear Zero is also not far from Sal Zero in tuning
So in the IEM world that's vastly different I'm guessing
Cos tbh to me they look about the same until 4k
no, he is right, with db that is a log thing, you can feel each decibels of difference, they both folow an harman ish target, but they have noticable dips between one and another
is may not be night and day, I get it, but it is there
nice source, me I own the chu, it just arrived in the mail
no you don't
I was more thinking, how can you see what's happening in my house, cause if you could, it meant you either are somebody from my direct family (wich I know you aren't), or you have a camera in my house, wich would be weird
do you use text to speech then ? or one of the weird keyboards for blind persons ?
ye, works too
can you teach me
how do you type with telekinis, if you are blind, and you use telekinesis to type, how do you know what you are mooving ? also you are a liar, it does not work
like, what if your keyboard shifted a bit to the right and your wrote like that instead ; jrmmp; ùu ,zùr od zuùrtov, you couldn't know it ?
Looking at the graph, they deviate by like 3dB at most in midbass and I personally don't think I will always hear that
Decibels are logarithmic but in practice hearing a narrow dip that is less than 3 dB really requires some attention. I can do it when editing audio cos I have an ear for it but casually listening I might miss it
It works wo a stand
Not ideal but it does….
And like I’m pretty sure I already said
I dont do « buy cheap buy twice »
I try to just buy some good stuff from the start and never have to buy it again
i just got porta pro 😎 i put ksc75's on it 😎😎
Found a pair of headphones while moving a bunch of stuff out of the old house. Curious to see how these sound.
Update: they sound great
is it sarcastic ?
also, i'm looking for a pair of bookshelf speakers, and I wonder how much it would cost me ?
No. Its actually pretty decent soundimg.
surprising
Not necessarily. Some headphones like KPH30i look like dog also
But sound quite nice
Also, entry-level powered bookshelf speakers can be had for 150-ish
for one, or for both ?
For both
yes, I know, there is the one that clips on your head too, but thoses look exeptionnaly poo poo
ok, and for 200 maybe 250 ish €
Yes, but like, what speaker exactly ? For between 200 and ~250€ ?
Not much of a speaker person but R1280TS/DB is ok for that price
ok, thanks
I hope you don't mind that I'm saving these to use them as meme templates
@wild token Sound Speeds april fools thing is priceless
Yes, this is an SM7b
Also I ordered Wan'er
Engaging in coper activities once again thinking it's gonna change smth
Well
I hope it decently fits
Might actually start using IEMs outside again if it does
I wish i could use my iems again
:(
You're trolling tho so why not
First driver completed. This build is quite stressful. I don't wanna mess up.
I might have fucked up
Yeah as soon as I go a little too high it crackles
I have some news, it might be my PC. They seem to sound fine on my other PC
Clueless as to why
Possible that its the cable
Or no might just not work great with my own amp
Unfortunate
What is this tho
DIY ploopy headphones
Interesting
Looked em up but there are no legit reviews
150 Canadian tho so it at least has to compete with decent closed-backs for the same price
150 is for DIY. If you build them correctly they easily compete with 400$ stuff
Yeah people have just now started to get their DIY kit and others are waiting for the prebuilt kit. Reviews should come in a couple of month. I'm hoping someone like Crinacle gets their hands on one. I think it would be interesting.
Only disappointment so far are the issues I had with them when paired with my DAC/Amp
super cool. nice job
Forgot to post the final product. Not perfect finish but as far as I can hear the sound isn't impacted.
Thank you!
Hello people, do somebody knows good closed back headphones ? I'm looking to upgrade from my dt240 pro to something better, I need it closed back because it is the one I use in public, and I'm looking for something that has kinda the same sound signature has the hd 600 or sundara, just with some existing sub bass
It looks amazing, I did one too a few years ago, it was not has nice, and it's actually in a box because I moved recently, if you are interested, I the day I find it if it's not broken I could show it to you
Hey sure
About 200€, I don't really care how they look or whatever, I just want something that sounds good, and is reasonably comfortable
Ok
Also, while you are here, I saw recently the ltt video about the abyss expensive edition, and I wanted to know why crinacle don't give a crap about it (it's c- on his list I think) where has dms praise it ? And is it any thing close to a good bang for the buck or are equally priced tower speakers better ?
ok, because I search some good realistic headphones, that are cheaper than the he1 because they are stupid expensive, and when you look at the ltt video, it makes you kinda think about it has some kind of "ultimate headphone experience" and I think joshua valour also found the abyss (I'm not sure he reviewed the expensive one, but he did show the less expensive ones in a couple of videos) good
sure, but it's mostly for short to medium session, I have an hd600 for longer session, and for the shorter sessions, I have lcd5, I can't run them for more than an hour because after it my neck breaks
it's so stupid heavy, but the good side of it is that now my index feels like a little feather on my head
sure, but it doesn't avoid me from trying to find better
yes, I really like it, it reminds me of my sundara but in like super sayan form
well, I don't want something stupid, I mostly want something that is still not too dumb to buy
eh, 20k perhaps
with the amp and dac, mine is actually not really working, so it's been like 3 month since I used my lcd, so now I only use my hd600 and sundara with a topping dx1
it was the big dac amp of sennheiser, hv800 I think its called
ok, personnally I got it because I bought an hd800s from a friend and it had it too, so he made me a price on the two if I took the dac amp and the headphone, so I had both for about the price of a hd800s alone
only the amp, but the only other amp I had, my topping is a bit too weak to use my hd800s, so i'm sad
yeah, and it's not really just this one, but whatever, I will just learn that I will need to have a second dac amp for the futur
I'm curious, do you all think the reason I can't run my Ploopys be that my AMP (topping L30) may not be powerful enough?
Ah yah know what, I did a bit of EQ and I don't seem to be earing the crackling or cliping I was earing
Although its definitly not EQd as well as the Ploopy dac
You know what. It might have been a bad connection. I didn't insert the right jack in enough and fixed it the other day.
do you have the ohm and sensibility of your headphones ?
ok, so you don't need help ?
and EQ don't really make that your headphone need more power has far has I know
I don't think he was asking that ?
yeah, but it's kinda hard to do it right, but yeah, if you have loads of time, and some knowledge, you could, it's surelly a good thing to do to really make it has you want it, and perhaps make better imaging or whatever I guess
also, while i'm here, do anybody has some thoughts about the DCA Aeon Closed X ?
what is the price ? and is it closed back too ?
yeah, it's a bit of a different price point, aeon is 500
I think so
well, that dude from headphone.com declared them the best sub 500$ closed back, so idk, I did not look at the graphs yet
ok, and, do you know what is the connector on it ?
ok.. I was thinking mini xlr, but I think it just has 3 pins, where has there it is 4 pins
wow, I never saw a headphone with only 12.5 ohms
with 80mw of power requirement, can it run off a phone you think ?
also, is break in the same has burn in ?
That wasn't what I meant. I thought the dac/amp it came with had some EQ done that alleviated the clipping/crackling I was hearing. Turned out i'm dumb and it wasn't the case.
They seem to be a tiny bit more demanding than my 250ohm dt770 but not by enough to make my amp struggle. Now that they appear to work fine I just need to slightly adjust the EQ cause they sound "thumpy" I guess, compared to the one it came with.
I know, it's a stupid thing to do, it's why I ask if that guy is talking about that
the 80mw power requirment for the headphone is from that website, i'm asking how much I can have out a usb c dongle
yes
ok
It's fully open source so pretty sure i can
it is that one https://www.amazon.fr/UGREEN-Adaptateur-Écouteur-Compatible-Galaxy/dp/B08TR7LWQH/ref=sr_1_11?__mk_fr_FR=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&keywords=ugreen%2Busb%2Bto%2Bjack&qid=1680634776&sr=8-11&th=1, and I have a pixel 7
Well, I'm french, so I will have it, what is the difference between the two ?
nice
Josh is deaf fyi
Also some convo you guys had up there
I don't think I would ever spend more than like 2k on source gear
I've heard a couple sub kilobuck cans from a Prism converter and Neve RNHP and I don't really think any headphone would need better
Except maybe power-wise cos stuff like K1K exists
As for headphones, with this much cash you just get whatever your ears like
Stuff like Abyss or Final Audio is a meme tho
I finally demoed ADX5K and a couple Focals fairly recently. I feel like they're all my sensible endgame that will actually work for dailying as opposed to monstrosities like HE1K that I can't even begin to imagine sitting on my head for more than an hour
Based
shhould I?
Rate my audio setup
What am I looking at
yes
What the hell is that/10
Is that a speaker ? A microphone thing ? What is it ?
It's the speakers of a salvaged beats mixr headset shoved into a custom made pillow
What kind of amp do you use to drive them loud enought to make you ear them ?
No need for an amp they're plenty loud as it is if I use my tiny mp3 player
And I only use about 60% volume to hear things pretty loud
You know that speakers drivers are just a few bucks ?
I did not know that. Although I never had a need for it
You never had the need for it, but you took out the guts of a headphone to do a speaker
Oh right well I kinda got around that by just 3D printing a shell to cover the back of the speakers
and then the front cover is just the default one
What do you mean ?
gimme 2 secs
Ok
wym?
Might be a bit more practical than stabbing a pillow
Like... Little tripods I guess
oh I gotcha. nah. If I did that I wouldn't really be able to use them for sleep and they would be super quiet given how I would need to place them much further away
What ?
Well how would a tripod set up work in this case?
My idea here is by sticking them in my pillow I can get stereo sound and keep it comfortable for sleep
Ohhh you sleep in it, that explain why you made it out of a pillow and why there is a big hole on the center, I was thinking you just used it like a computer speakers or whatever, and I did not get why you would put them in a pillow then
Makes a bit more sense
I didn't know people do that, I just bought earbuds personnaly, it's the only reason why I bought my moondrop chu
yeah no I may be stupid but I'm not insane enough to turn it into my speaker setup lol
Yeah, I just did not get why you would put it in a pillow
I never could use earbuds for multiple reasons. But the main thing is I like to side sleep so that would just result in me pressing the earbuds deeper into my ear as I slept and waking up with intense pain
tbh I just can't use earbuds in general anymore
my ears are too sensitive
Idk, the internet is full of... To put it nicely, crazy people so idk, litteraly 3 days ago I was talking with a dude that tried to change a fountain in a speaker
I mean too be fair I've seen fountain speakers before they're pretty cool
Personnally I just did a trip to IKEA and bought the squishiest pillow, and problem solved, 12$ and I don't have the mutant baby of a speaker and a pillow
He was using the drops of water has the thing that did the noise, idk how the other did it, but I found it kinda cool, has far has I know he still did not make it good
well those are nice too but I don't like those pillows and since I had this block of foam sitting around for like a year in my closet I figured I may as well use it. Also I wanted to make this custom one because I find myself going through all 3 different sleeping positions while I sleep so making sure my neck is properly supported and not bent at weird angles while I sleep played a big part in the design
oooh that's neat
It is extra jank and it sounds like crap, and you need to be real close to hear it, but yeah, he used a broken electric water gun to just shoot water in the air, and because aerodynamic and crap are a thing, the droplets don't all fall at the exact same time, so you need to know the music to recognise it
sounds like a complicated project
Well, personnally I have ideas to make better, but I'm not exactly at my home, so I can't have acces to my computer to do a model of it
He finished it I believe, it just sounds like shit
lol fair
I said him that making the gun shoot down might be a better bet, because then the water will not have to go up then down and having to fight aerodynamics, and add something to give some resonance, and he did not respond
Well that's a good point, maybe he wants it to be more visually cool looking though hence why he would want it to go straight up
Probably, also, while you are here, do you have an idea where I could buy some tiny keyboard switches ?
keyboard switches huh
Fraid not. Unless you mean something like those tiny buttons used in things like gameboys
Idk, I'm trying to put a raspberry pi in a calculator with a trackpad and keyboard, but regular switches are too fat to go in
ah sounds like a super tight fit
I know, but vacations are coming, and I don't really have anything to do of my life
Sounds like you'll want something like this
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832644127721
or even smaller these
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832643469975
Well, I have a screen, a raspberry pi, a trackpad, a full keyboard and hopefully a battery in it, so yeah, but it's one of the chungus calculator, it's like the big TI ones, but because I'm on the other side of the world in France, it's from Casio
ugh I was never good at removing the extra bits from links but it's these buttons
Can they be hand wired like regular switches you think ?
They operate like any other button I've used
It's just you might want a cheap usb microscope to solder with because the terminals are a bit hard to see with the naked eye
Yeah, but if I wire them like keyboard switches, will it be recognised like any other switches ?
Ok, I have the Ifixit helping hand, and until now it was good enought, do you think it will do the cut with it ?
yeah that'd probably help. just keep in mind you'd probably want to get like twice as many as you think you do since they're pretty easy to mess up
also lol
while we were talking I just finished putting doom on my mp3 player
How much SPF ? (Second per frames)
no clue but it's actually pretty smooth surprisingly
How ? I put it on my calculator (the sacrificial one that will have its guts removed) and I had like 5fps
beats me man this mp3 player is from like 2005 ¯_(ツ)_/¯
And, how do you control it, it looks extremely small
Ok
What is happening to the screen ?
it's emulating the position of everything
bit difficult to do when there are only two colors available
Why is it just dots like that ?
low resolution screen
Yeah, but It's not doing it when you select the game
yeah that's true. but it's doing more than showing static text on the screen for doom
Fair enought
Why use your pc when you can have a worst experience on a MP3 driver old enought to drive and be even happier
Ok, ye it would be good, for me it's 9:50
Managed to get the Ploopys to sound less BRRRRBBOOMBOOM on my Stack. They sound very poggies.
Amazing
What do you mean by that ?
Without EQ they sound like bombs are dropping in your street
Which is why it also comes with a Amp/Dac ootb. I just wanted to use the ones I owned already so I needed to EQ them.
ok
Started making a test rig. Random head and silicon ears. 711 coupler from China. I think we’re in business
I wanna use it for testing VR headsets and headphone accessories (including the ones I make)

nice
Crying for my bank
OOP
can someone recommend me a wireless headset, preferably 2.4ghz but low latency Bluetooth is ok. good battery life (50+ hours) with good noise isolation and/or cancelling, good enough sound (idc about technical shit, if it's decently flat then good) and I'm not paying a premium for hifi or brand or anything like that. idc if it's a gaming headset or whatever. budget is like 200-300$
have fun
so far the ones that I've found that fit my criteria best are Logitech G pro x 2 lightspeed, razer blsckshark v2 pro 2023 or on the Bluetooth side, audiotechnica m20xbt but I'm hoping to get more recommendations cuz, there has to be more than like 3 headsets that aren't annoyingly bad
comfort is also a big deal for me, good padding in the headband (no floating thing) and nice fluffy earcups
i ended on the Sony xm5
i want avantone mixcubes or auratone 5c or an ns10 rake
Alright, what do you guys think about those DIY headphones, the Ploopy headphones. They seem like a good thing to build?
You wouldn't believe what I pre-ordered when they came out
Fun project but not perfect. I have 4 issues with it.
- They require quite a bit of power (supplied through the DSP but hard to run through other amps) so make sure to have a USB port that can supply the power. I've seen report of people having issues with that. (perhaps through a powered-hub it would be a non-issue)
- This might be because of me since I built themThey sound good however I had clipping issues with mine, mostly when watching videos on Youtube.
- They don't get loud.
- If you don't wanna run the DSP and have a powerful enough AMP you will need to tune them yourself cause they otherwise sound terrible.
TLDR: Use them with the DSP.
I generally like them though. I still use them from time to time but I main some OMEGA by DMS now.
For 150$CAD they are pretty insane value imo
I hope they make a V2 that fixes those issues though I would 100% build a pair again.
Oh also they don't clamp very hard so I can't headbang as hard with them 😩
Did they ever say they intend on making a v2?
I don't think so but I would like them to
Now my finger is just hovering over the buy button. @solar swallow do you know if there is a community where I can find other headphone designs people made?
No idea, I was watching the Ploopy subreddit and found out about it but I know there are a couple other designs. I haven't checked them out though.
The one thing I wish they would do is at least sell just the hardware without the 3D printed parts
Just adds on extra costs when I can just print that myself and save that money for a proper headband that looks better like this
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805119713589.html
The reason they don't is that they lose almost nothing on the 3d printed hardware iirc.
I guess, but I still feel like they'll add that on to the overall cost just because of the labor involved
It is what it is. Also from what I've seen some of the parts are hard to print.
But I'm aware it's been mentioned a couple of times in their reddit
Welp I caved
Time to see if they sound better than my AKG k240 studio
Hate the headstrap though, I'm going to see if I can modify that to be a lot better
have fun with it 🫡
Cool tool once you've built them. https://github.com/george-norton/headphones-toolbox I like the default tuning but it's nice to have 🙂
Ah the tuning software
I'm not sure if the default firmware supports it now so you might have to change it but it's super easy.
Sounds good I appreciate it!
Oh that reminds me
I heard from some people that the headphones are a little on the quieter side is that true?
Yes, they do get loud-ish but not as much as other headphones I had. They'll start clipping really quickly.
hmm
I wonder if this mod is any good for that then
Nah my household isn't too loud thankfully, but I figure being able to make it a little louder would help for some songs with quieter tones or games possibly
Oh wait do you know the size of the earcups by any chance?
Just want to figure out of this headband I'm going to get would even be compatable
They have STL files on their repo https://github.com/ploopyco/headphones/tree/master/hardware
gracias
The cups are large though.
thats fine, the headband is for very large headphones anyway, Just want to get an idea of what kind of modifcation I may need to make
And of course the build guide is here: https://github.com/ploopyco/headphones/wiki/Part-1%3A-Introduction
all appreciated thank you!
Also a note with my unit. The cable doesn't seem to be entirely standard. I have the L/R channels on different rings. I believe it might have been fixed in hardware now but I thought I'd mention it in case it wasn't.
good to know!
So on the ploopy it would sound fine but on other headphones both L/R would sound like they were from the Left channel.
ah
well that should be alright, chances are this will be the daily driver and I'll just give my old headphones to my sister or something
I hope you like them as much as I do (I'm not a Ploopy shill I swear
)
lol, I'm sure I'll love it
And it totally wont be buyers remorse causing me to be forced to like them
Well at least it's not that expensive of a project for 129CAD
I suppose so
There we go, headband arrived before the headphones did but I found a good way to make them compatible.
Exactly, unfortunately I won't know for sure if it works until next week.
Box!!!
tyy
So far loving the sound
just going back and forth with my normal headphones now to heard the difference

Time for a volume test!
So how are you finding the volume
what?
one post above
WHAT?
also yee volume good
Not sure what people were complaining about when they said the audio was low
The only moment where I wish they were a bit louder is when I had lots of noise. In somewhat calm environment they are definitly fine if you have undamaged earings.
