My biggest issue with the 50 1.2 right now is it feels dated lmao

But yeah the 50 1.2 right now is great but no dual nano usm motors feels bad. Like even the 50 1.8 I was testing focused faster lol

Like once you use dual nano usm it's so hard to go back to lenses without it unless you're using a camera with LPE19 batteries and even then the throughput isn't always enough

Like the 50 1.2 focused the exact same on my r3 as it did on my r5

You wouldn’t have survived the dslr days if you don’t like the RF 1.2. The EF version was half the speed and was only accurate with focus maybe 1/3rd of the time.

Yeah the cameras with the LPE19 batteries I don't mind the focus speed on those. I used those with the fast glass lenses like 400 2.8 even the one from 1999 and it was fine. The 50 1.2 is just so slow

But it feels bad looking at Sony and theirs is so much faster because it has dual motors

So I'm definitely expecting it from Canon atp

But yeah 1500 I'd absolutely buy that if it has dual motors

Curious what modes you're using for focusing if you're having issues with RF system, it's been insanely accurate and fast for me across the line from the cheap 16mm 2.8 up

I use zone focus with servo on shutter button, eye tracking on rear button

the interior of the 35 is wild, especially since they kept it relatively compact at 1.4

I mostly just had problems with the R5 that I had and when they updated it to the new af in the R3 and all cameras after just got too used to that lmao

The biggest problem I had with the R5 even using the 100-300 was it would randomly just stop tracking whoever i was shooting

my god the amount of times the R5 focused on an idol's hand instead of their face is infuriating for me like it happens like idk 1/3 of the time when I'm in korea lol

idol like puts their hand up near their face and it's like yep let me focus on their hand instead

R3 I never had that problem

would just be doing a series of burst and suddenly it focuses their hand instead

I lost so many shots cause of dumb shit like that

also yeah doing run and gun like actually following the idols there was just some lenses I straight up couldn't use because they weren't reliable and every time I had to do that I didn't even reach for my r5

was funny my friend up to even had the same experience in korea. I took photos of the same idol as another person and we both sent the photos to my friend. I was using r3 and 100-300 and the other guy was using r5 and 70-200

he up to messages me like a day later and he's like

"... bro you have so many more photos in focus than the other guy I got photos from"

and we were both using relatively the same settings since it was bright as shit outside so our shutter speed was really high

Not uncommon to be at like 1/2000 at music bank if not more

When I had my 28-70 f2 jesus I did not trust that lens on my r5 whatsoever because it was just slow lens and not enough power from the r5 to keep up with moving subjects. Definitely really good for studio work or people stationary, but usually that's not what i'm shooting

not to mention too short for me like in korea 200mm is not enough for a lot of things so 28-70 definitely isn't unless you're going to like the airport or something for idols arriving lmao

Shot a lot of weddings with the r5 and 50 1.2 combo and never felt it was slow, same with using it on the r6 at concerts. I can share my AF settings, I did customize the subject switching sensitivity and all

so then I ended up like getting rid of my gear and wading that out

I just rented it again in like late july with the 24-105 2.8 because I didn't wanna just be shooting everything at 2.8 even though shooting wide open on the 50 1.2 is prob not a great idea in kpop lol

once I found out I would have to recalibrate it every time I went to a new lighting scenario I just gave up

only took the r6 last night and wanted a tighter shot sometimes, crop mode to punch in at 1.6x at 200mm worked great. Cuts the file down to 7mp, but those 7mp still look great and more than usable.

I like shooting lower resolution for the cleaner noise performance. Actually another reason I've been put off of the r5ii

but 20mp is about the limit for me where I don't feel like going under that regarding resolution well even though 12mp is still 4k but

well hey I did think initially I needed 45mp and then I ended up liking less resolution anyways so who knows maybe eventually i'll get to that point lmao

My first dslr was 8mp and my first full frame was 12mp and I was doing large prints for clients with those. 7mp of a modern full frame will still look great on screens. And you can always use super resolution in Lightroom if a larger file is needed, big part of why I’m not scared of using it so much.

I always preferred the lower megapixel FF too, going back to the original 5D vs the 5D II/III and the Nikon 750 vs the 850.

And I’ve always paired it with a crop sensor body to get more versatility from primes and long lenses.

Yeah I remember kitzen in here talking about the c70 having a certain look and that's when I started realizing what it was specifically and that it was just that I didn't like the look of high resolution. It's nice if I need to crop but otherwise I don't really like the look because like kitzen said it just looks too digital

image quality is great when they are in focus but it just cannot keep up with moving subjects at all

If yours is slow and not accurate I’d send it in to CPS and get it checked

But kpop doesn’t have a lot of scenarios like that in korea in the chances you actually get to use the lens cause in korea basically anything under 200mm never gets used 95% of the time you’re here

Basically can only use this lens at birthday cafes, airports, and the off chance that idol actually does daily fan manager or something

I’m certain it’s just a limitation of older motor design which started changing with dual nano usm

At least in regards of having a higher hit rate

Not in a sense of “oh how did we ever survive without this in the past”

Canon primes are just such awful run and gun lenses until they use dual nano usm though I guess cause sony’s uses their equivalent of that tech and you can see it in videos it focuses in the same scenarios more than twice as fast

Nah. The RF primes are fast and accurate and great for run and gun use. I use them daily for photo and video and even for a full wedding day or fast action I have no problem relying on them for pro work. If they were slow or awful at anything they wouldn’t be used.

This is it tracking my dog running at 1.2 in very low light (12,500 iso) and it nailed all 3

If you have issues with those focusing quickly or tracking you’re doing something wrong

Yeah it’s naturally easier to nail focus if you just isolate the subject with zoom but that doesn’t mean the wider lenses aren’t capable. Just gotta know how to use focus zones and tracking settings.

If there’s some scope for comparison the lenses with dual nano motors are going to beat out the primes every time in hit rate and especially focus speed

Like focus speed it’s not even close we’re talking like milliseconds to like a half a second to even a full second for the primes to focus

Especially when you get into cameras using lpe19 batteries even canon themselves says those cameras focus dual nano faster than those without it

It’s called dual power auto focus

It’s probably less noticeable on cameras using lpe6nh but it’s night and day on lpe19 cameras

These probably aren’t the greatest examples, but if anything this just kind of fits the uselessness of primes in korea because the only way to get closer would be like getting into space that’s controversial kek, but that being said these are not the levels of sharpness i’d expect out of a lens like this

I’m not saying other lens designs aren’t faster, I’m saying you’re splitting hairs about specs and wrong about them being awful for run and gun or slow. Plenty of pros use them in demanding situations without issue. The RF L primes are some of the best performing lenses ever made and that includes autofocus performance. People walking around is not a scenario where you should struggle with them at all. Even going from minimum focus distance to infinity doesn’t take a full second. They’re also sharper than zooms so no clue why you’re having trouble.

I mean even that argument hasn't been true for the last decade or so with modern lens designs. Well it has, but thats also splitting hairs too saying they're sharper. We're talking like less than 1% differences primes vs zooms in regards to sharpness. Even the 50 1.8 I couldn't tell a difference between the 1.2 and 1.8 stopped down. I'm not saying they're not good, I'm saying they're overstated their performance

Like my friend sent a photo some days ago at 52k iso on his A1 and 135 1.8 and it was still sharper than some photos I've seen from the rf 50 1.2 like the ones above

And that's even with factoring in that past 6400 iso the A1 shouldn't be sharper at those values

Because the other two lenses I have are considerably sharper and more reliable

Youtube camera people don’t really have valuable insight about gear for people actually working with it daily. They’re workhorse cameras for working pros that have worn out the prev models. it’s definitely time to upgrade and the improvements are significant for them. Precapture alone is worth it for a lot of people that will make use of these cameras in a working environment.

I’m on my third r6 body (well II now) and I know a guy with an r3 where the top shutter button doesn’t work anymore after 500k shots so he fires it with his pinky on the portrait shutter lol

Also incorporating an ipad into my work flow instead of sending them to my phone and letting my phone throttle

Just rate in camera, transfer with canon app and filter by rated photos and import only those and then just bring them straight into lightroom

Make sure exposures are correct or just make a slight edit and add on the adaptive preset and it’s done. Had photos out in like 20 minutes the other day. Was fucking amazing

Actually unironically one of the reasons I ended up getting a 1.2 for those scenarios because I hated having distractions in photos in some of those cases. Like god the other day I took a photo of an izna member and there’s just some guy with his finger in his ear in the background lol…

But I think the ones I have are just generally more for portraits.. studio work etc

I actually went and looked at the mask and it’s just what I was originally doing anyways and it’s just like masking the skin on their face and then lowering the texture and clarity slightly

Detects teeth and eyes separately and will like slightly raise exposure and lower saturation to get rid of yellows stuff like that

It just gets me like.. 90% of the way there which is good enough for me. I fucking love it lol

You're on the more professional side so I'd trust your opinion more. I assume you shoot xfavc right? I'm looking into the different codecs right now and looking at some videos and there was some comparisons and the xfavc in a lot of scenarios actually looks better than the canon raw lite so I was curious if you ever messed with any of this

Yeah, raw is noisier since it has no baked in reduction and almost never used or requested except for really high end graphics work.

Depending on client and use I’ll do intra or long GOP XFAVC since they’re indecipherable for web use

Davinci handles canon raw fine in my experience but again, never needed to use it and it’s just more work for every stage

yeah, xfavc is the highest quality wrapper for mp4 but still compressed, but still gives the option for higher and lower bit rate for space savings

its somewhere btween raw lite and hevc on the c70, but that quality limits frame rates to 30 for the full sensor read out higher bitrate

yeah the modern m chips have made that choice a lot easier. used to record to prores raw on the atomos just because the mac chips could handle that easy since it was apples codec. other option was to make proxy files in 720 which took forever

the moving water thing is if you're doing long gop instead of intraframe. GOP does a compression where it picks key frames and fills in the ones around it which is bad for motion like water or sports, but intra is a full sensor read out each frame so you dont have to worry about it. the c70 has both options depending on file size needs

Yeah always denoise for raw as the first node in davinci (or second after any CST). Iirc GPU is used more for noise reduction and vram is the biggest factor there.

My m3 pro mac with the 14 core gpu handles denoise really well, whereas my mid tier pc can’t really handle raw + denoise in 4k at all lol

The ones I got from lenscoat and rolanpro were so dogshit

The one from lenscoat I had to go and cut the fabric myself because they made it too long for the barrel on my 100-300 like it was gripping the non moving part of the lens

So it made the barrel extremely difficult to turn I was like what the fuck dude

The one chasing birds made has the numbers only visible and they didn’t have it grip that part nearly as tightly so while there is a small amount of resistance it’s not anything near what the lenscoat one was + having the numbers visible

Just felt like there’s way more thought put into it
