The enthusiast and professional level mirrorless cameras have been using incredibly high density viewfinder displays for a while. Scale that up to a large postage stamp (as Apple referred to it) of for example 3-5cm diagonal, and you get essentially the displays Apple is claiming to have in its AR headset. They said 23 million pixels across both displays, which puts it somewhere between 4K and 5K resolution per display.
Apple invested early and heavily into both mini-LED and micro-LED tech, making sure they have first pick and large scale access to the fabs that make them.
