Open ended chat in search might prove to be a bad idea at this time!

Bing's implementation, despite all these obvious bugs related to how far its training data goes, is a lot more "human" sounding and it's hilarious and terrifying

eager parrot
#

hopefully we're heading towards the end of that kind of search result page, 3 ads followed by specially prioritized results before you find what you wanted in the first place at the bottom or the 2nd page vivikek

#

it took a bit of getting used to, but duckduckgo generally does well enough 85% of the time for me anyway, but sometimes google is still needed...

trim flicker
#

I think the idea of implementing chat bots on search isn't actually bad but unfortunately corporate interest may and will fuck it up

#

Expecting news on ad implementation and stuff soon babychoerry

eager parrot
#

they'll figure out a way to monetize it better for sure. ask for a proper recommendation for a 3-course dinner meal for a party? it'll include "prioritized" recommendations involving some company who paid to have their products come up first

trim flicker
#

Yep

charred fulcrum
#

Ain't that just modern day SEO?

eager parrot
#

yes but chatbot makes it sound a lot more friendly and human rather than just a link to a recipe

trim flicker
#

Yea they'll actually recommend you while sounding like a person

#

Hopefully

#

Which shouldn't feel as intrusive as an actual ad, in theory

eager parrot
#

the sample on bing's side

#

now just replace some parts with sponsored products and tada! paid chatbot advertisements

#

the possibilities are endless really, and for once, while Google's SEO is cutting edge, they're somewhat behind on this

#

mainly because they can't figure out how to push out a product and support it past two years without thinking about putting it in the graveyard

trim flicker
#

Google is a weird company

eager parrot
#

between their decision for chrome to move to Manifest V3 soon, which limits a lot of extensions and addons like adblockers, and their new "Privacy Sandbox" for Android coming, which is ironically named as it is another tracking and ad targeting system, I've been slowly moving away from their products.

I doubt people could have predicted the impact of fossil fuels burning at the start of the industrial revolution lol

#

I'm not sure we fully understand its impact even today with all the precision instruments and constant measurements all over the world either.

#

There's certainly enough people will will fight tooth and nail to deny it altogether as well.

oak lodge
#

Mmmh not too sure if muckrake journalism wasn't already a thing. Plus they knew that burning leaded fuels was bad in the 1890s though they persisted into the late 20th century

#

perhaps the idea of concern was not on the environment first is valid. As it was always the people who were made ill that they drew conclusions from first. I understand your statement completely

eager parrot
#

Also regarding the gas vs. electric thing,

#

people would have wildly different perspectives on this bit depending on where they are from and what their locale's infrastructure is like.

trim flicker
#

Yea

eager parrot
#

Having a stable power grid is a huge privilege.

oak lodge
#

mmhm

eager parrot
#

And we've seen in recent months what simple infrastructure sabotage could do in the US.

#

Or with the recent winter storms.

#

It's all very vulnerable, even in stable parts of the world.

oak lodge
#

Infrastructure sabotage happened decades ago to the states if I am not mistaken

eager parrot
#

It's been continuous thing, but also continuously ignored.

trim flicker
#

The thing is that this entire thing is just a grift of them trying to imply that the woke liberals wanna get rid of gas stoves, it's not really a commentary on infrastructure because these people are also against bills that would better that off

#

But yeah

#

Infrastructure is the most important thing

eager parrot
#

Oh of course, nobody's having good faith arguments and discussions on any side.

oak lodge
#

ignore the dumbass takes and there is no sensationalism mystique to snag anyone on the fence about an issue

eager parrot
#

It's all about owning the other side with some idiotic platitudes, which could have been legitimate if they had properly laid out their arguments and platforms, but they don't.

oak lodge
#

however that's it's own dynamic and media is fond of that.

#

eager parrot
#

We had the Ohio disaster recently, and so many vocal voices on social media were basically saying we deserve it because we voted red.

#

Like if that's the attitude... nothing going to get done

#

Yes, Trump removed the certain regulations and guidelines for rail safety

#

But Biden could have placed them back on at some point in the past two years yeojinshrug like everything else they tried to reverse (except border policies apparently).

trim flicker
#

Unfortunately US politics really is mostly choosing between falling down horrendously OR falling down just a bit slower since both sides are completely aligned with corporations

oak lodge
#

schism is not exactly humanitarian.

eager parrot
#

for the most part they just have slightly different social perspectives, otherwise they're basically overwhelmingly aligned the same way, on foreign policy, on corporate policies, etc.

this got recommended to me

#

honestly it's hard for me to disagree with these points

Honestly one of the only phone reviewers I feel out there that is objective

just kinda some interesting points

#

actually funnily enough though very last point is what made me hate iphones lmao

#

based on comments though seems like I wasn't the only one

hoary charm
#

why would huawei getting banned in the west make one hate iphones

keen nest
#

that feels downplayed

#

no GMS is a death sentence to android phones

kinda goes in hand with the other point he mentions about apple essentially doing incremental upgrades but now that innovation has plateaued they're just all about even

ive had an iphone since the 4 and it never really bothered me

I think this is a really solid video that explains both sides really well cause android fans kinda dumbasses sometimes too but man been arguing the plateauing of tech for like 3 or so years now with phones

#

not really making leaps and bounds anymore

#

really felt like huawei was actually pushing the market though until that ban

#

sucks a lot

unborn echo
#

I think it's just the phone cameras for now

that's kinda the thing though there's physical limitations

hoary charm

lots of those chinese brands just throw in specs that fool people that dont know better though

like, take any 500usd and up priced phone right now, and a casual phone user wouldn't even bother with differences

hoary charm
#

when an iphone 48 or pixel whatever it has is better

cause its all software nowadays

keen nest
#

it's definitely not entirely software

#

I had the mate 40 pro, s20 pro and iphone 12 pro max all at the same time

hoary charm
#

well yeah not entirely but the software is where the improvements are coming from now

keen nest
#

huawei was absolutely demolishing the other ones it wasn't even remotely close

unborn echo
keen nest
#

ye you shouldn't for sure

#

wasn't implying that just using this to further prove the point that phone cameras are.. basically as good as they're gonna get now

unborn echo
keen nest

i'll say that iphone has had the best video for a while that's for sure

#

samsung video is just yikes

#

idrk what samsung is doing their cameras have just never really been there

#

wish they would go yoink that leica partnership

#

that was like half the reason huawei cameras were so good

keen nest
#

went back to z fold life cause I saw a z fold 3 on ebay for $500

#

only upgrade on 4 was 50mp camera

#

kinda dumb

#

pay $1800 for z fold 4 or $500 for 3 hmm

hoary charm
#

i thought about swapping to a flip instead of getting an iphone 14 pro

#

but my mums been through 2 already with screen issues

keen nest

ye I think the flip was more prone to screen issues

#

fold never had an issue with

#

which... I guess makes sense since it's a much more expensive phone

unborn echo
#

I'm using a handed down galaxy note 10 right now and all I can actually complain about is the battery life

keen nest
#

ye my friend had a note 10 too up until like a week ago he finally went to the s23 lmao

unborn echo
#

it's so low by todays standards lol from 3000mah batteries to around 5000 in a span of what 3 years

keen nest
#

he was talking about how it wasn't like thatttt much of an upgrade though I'm like see kek

unborn echo
#

you can really use phones right now the whole day

#

remember when most people are carrying their big ass battery banks

keen nest
#

z fold life still gotta do that

#

LMAO

#

unlucky

unborn echo
#

oh lmao true

hoary charm
#

yeah it probably depends on what you do with it all day

#

sometimes my 14 pro max doesnt last all day

keen nest
#

ye if you're on inner screen all day it'll go through it eventually

hoary charm
#

cause i have the always on display on and keep it on high refresh

#

although idk if high refresh can be turned off

unborn echo
#

one thing I do like about iphones that idk if was said in mrwhosetheboss' vid, is the software support and updates

#

if you're not one of those that changes phones every year and get the latest ones, you're for sure gonna get the price you paid just for the software

hoary charm
#

that’s gotten a lot better for androids hasn’t it

#

like it used to be the case where you’d only get 2 years of os updates

#

whereas the iPhone 7 was still supported until recently

valid magnet
#

i was always an android user i can't use apple very well

keen nest
#

iphones retain their value really well too

#

mostly due to the brand

unborn echo
keen nest
#

got apple discount on my iphone 13 and then went around and sold it like a year later for same price I bought it for

#

is the one thing I really wish I could say about other phones

#

also I'm pretty happy to see that albeit it's a niche that macro photography has come to phones

grave shore
#

apple is the embodiment of everything I hate the most; status items, brand loyalty, anti consumer practices, walled garden ecosystem, no right to repair, not thinking about power users... the list goes on. My life long boycott for apple products will continue

keen nest
#

🤝

#

Macbooks I feel are genuinely good products if you're not doing anything gpu based. For creative work it feels really unmatched in that field at the moment for mobile work

#

Outside of thatttttt though ye

#

kinda feel like I could recommend apple products but be like "there's also an android product that does the exact same thing"

#

I was looking at razer blade laptops for a bit because they were like... the only other laptop out there with a SD card reader lmao

grave shore
#

like even if they had the best laptop ever with crazy specs i cannot support that kind of a company

keen nest
#

ye it's the anti consumer stuff that's super off putting for me

#

holy fuck

#

I would simp apple so hard if they just let me fucking expand my storage on this macbook

#

but ye can't do that

#

I will say though just really driving home that other point that as I've gotten older and started looking at things as investments and learning about depreciating assets that was one thing I came to appreciate about apple products

#

kinda trolling to sell your phone back to apple though that being said to upgrade

#

legit just go sell it online you'll get like majority of what you paid back kek

#

it's a bit silly how much brand loyalty there is in it

#

apple would go buy it off of you for like 1/4 of what you paid though

grave shore
#

there's no point upgrading your phone every year anyway

unborn echo
grave shore
#

and it's not like i buy things with the intention of selling them later

keen nest
#

ye different priorities

unborn echo
#

fun little vid about how much it costs for a whole apple ecosystem

keen nest
#

there's photographers on youtube that actually mentioned they went for 8tb macbook because they didn't wanna use dongles lmao

#

but mfer if I have 3 usb c ports i'M USING THEM

#

I'm only putting lightroom catalogs on mine anyways 1tb perfect for me

#

the ecosystem shit is so overrated ngl

#

I think copy paste between devices is cool

#

I keep trying apple watches though cause they unlock your devices or something if you have the setting turned on

#

do you know how many times it actually properly unlocked my phone or macbook

#

yeah less times than I could count on one finger so that was a lie

unborn echo
#

lmao

keen nest
#

that was between 4 different watches

#

shit is so inconsistent

oak lodge
keen nest
#

and 3 different phones

#

Honestly it's not really that stupid it's a niche

#

for their use case it makes sense

oak lodge
#

I guess in the end streamlining and making consumers dependent on "dongles" makes for funnier results

#

I misused "stupid" my fault haha

keen nest
#

ye it's a traveling youtuber and photographer I'd have to find his channel again but he was mentioning how he does a lot of his editing on planes and he hated having dongles dangling off the side of the trays and people would hit them and shit and the price of the storage upgrade was about what an external ssd would have cost anyways so

#

he was like fuck it

#

that being said still wouldn't do it because of the argument of backups

#

I'll swap to a razer blade laptop if they ever get a charger of the same degree as the macbook magsafe ones and add on like just a single extra usb c port

#

would be nice to.. actually have a gpu again

#

cbf carrying around a giant fucking brick anymore

#

this fucking apple setup video lmao

unborn echo
#

idk if it makes it better that most of them know the tech enough

#

it's like a "what if there is no other option" set-up though. still it's a looooot of money really

#

The woes of an artist

trim flicker
#

The worst thing to me is that I know for a fact that this AI art stuff won't die
It's built on this entire sort of "resentment" people feel towards artists and art in general, that they're incapable/unable to do it because they're not talented and weren't born with it or whatever

#

So it'll keep happening because I know for a fact that feeling will never go away

#

Everyone wants to do creative stuff

#

And they feel it's gatekept from them by uhhhh

#

skill and talent

#

And don't want to actually put in the work to learn stuff
And even people who do want to learn get turned off because they know they have a long way ahead of them

keen nest
#

Yeah this is what I figured was going to be next I'm not even surprised

#

Obv it's just a concept but yeah years down the line definitely can see this happening

#

Especially now that a physical shutter is getting removed in newer cameras

#

Maybe should post this in photography too kek

#

But ye I wouldn't mind a future where users could have both

#

Can never have a full frame sensor in a phone but having smart phone software and DSLR/mirrorless hardware get combined would be sick

#

Even if it just gets to point and shoot which he also mentions getting killed off lmao

trim flicker
#

Oh that's a pretty sick concept actually

eager parrot
#

Also I don't really get the point of a 1-inch (it's not really 1-inch, it's just 1inch-type) sensor with a full frame M-mount lens.

#

that's like a 3x crop factor

#

Obviously not as neat, but it also didn't cost $40K

#

and it had an actual aps-c sensor and worked with any E-mount lens (and any lens that E-mount can adapt like M-mount and larger flange distance mounts)

#

Almost 10 years ago now.

i wish samsung did fun stuff like that again and not just foldables

eager parrot

halcyon iron

eager parrot

they released a second version sometime after as well

trim flicker
#

Being fair Samsung displays has some cool tech

eager parrot
halcyon iron
#

samsung display is independent from samsung mobile though isn't it

trim flicker
#

yeah but they're responsible for the bending displays

halcyon iron
#

yup

trim flicker
#

they have some prototype extending/contracting ones too

halcyon iron
#

i never rly used them but LG phones were starting to get really interesting

trim flicker
#

Pretty wacky stuff

halcyon iron
#

they dropped a teaser for a rollable phone and dipped out of the market lmao

eager parrot
#

both LG and Samsung have some really awesome display tech

#

when everybody else was stagnating or abandoning projects, they pushed full forward with progress

#

both in OLED and Q-dot, miniLED stuff

halcyon iron
#

Asian companies are the only ones trying to innovate in terms of display tech it seems

#

or at least people talk about them more

eager parrot
#

I can't even name a western display panel maker anymore

#

And camera sensors are also pretty exclusively Asia-only nowadays too

#

Sony dominating the semiconductor scene for camera sensors

#

there's Canon and Samsung too

#

everybody else just uses their sensors

#

at least as far as most consumer/commercial and enterprise products are concerned, there's some specialized stuff for scientific instruments that involves other companies

halcyon iron
#

im pretty sure something every phone has samsung or sony parts or at least a majority of them

trim flicker
#

think almost all flagship phones just use samsung diplays

#

and a lot of them use sony sensors no?

eager parrot
#

I think only Samsung uses their own camera sensors

#

everybody else uses Sony lol

#

which to be fair Samsung has a sizeable enough marketshare, but still

halcyon iron
#

samsung tends to use as much of their products as possible in their phones which makes total sense

#

i mean doesnt everyone do it

#

if they can afford it

eager parrot
#

it's just once you get to the scales they're doing semiconductors it's practically indistinguishable from black magic and catching up for other companies would require some seriously huge sums of money and many years of R&D

#

by which point Samsung/Sony/etc. who are already key players would have also progressed further, the gap remaining lol

#

I think Apple's trying to do as many things in-house as possible, them moving their processor designing in-house was a major move

#

And they have enough money to secure big contracts with Samsung and TMSC's fabs

trim flicker
#

Yep and it worked out amazingly well for them too

eager parrot
#

surprisingly well, who would have thought they could get away with doing everything from mac pro down to their apple watch with in-house processors and it would work with very little issues for the average user 😄

eager parrot
#

It's not a practical concept imo just from an ergonomics and also from a processing perspective. That one back in 2014 used the same sensor as Sony's NEX cameras (mirrorless aps-c line) with E-mount, it had some success but they abandoned the idea eventually.

#

I know the market overall for dedicated cameras is shrinking, but there are better options than ever out there, even cheap full frame cameras you could use, in addition to your phone, and most offer a way to use the phone as a secondary screen or quick transfer as well.

#

like this.

#

Compact, fast, works with any EF lenses or any other full frame lenses that can be adapted onto E-mount.

eager parrot
#

How many mounts and dismounts will it take for even that sapphire cover to be damaged or break, and 3x crop factor, and sitting right on the back element of the lens doesn't seem like it'll give very good results compared to just using a Leica (of which you could buy 3-4 Leica bodies and several nice lenses at that price point)

#

Also sapphire on sensor, I'm sure there's some image quality issues there.

keen nest
#

Ye it's got a really long way to go that's for sure but I'm never going to complain about innovation. It's a sick idea

awful politicians with synthesised voices of them talking like teenagers can only bring them closer in vulnerability to common citizen... I'm sure they love that.

#

in terms of reputation that is

lmao, that shitty AI anime vid has reached my twt tl now as well

trim flicker
#

Sorry that happened to you

blazing depot
#

I mean, it's honestly pretty funny#

#

Here, let me show you why

trim flicker
#

even Bakshi couldn't escape it

blazing depot
#

He isn't particularly fond of it either

#

The comments are gold

trim flicker
#

I looked at it for a bit but honestly I'm just sick of this entire thing choerrydone

#

this AI thing understandably has been like a major point of discussion on basically any art space I'm on so I'm just done with it

blazing depot
#

It's the FUTU- gunshot

trim flicker
#

Unfortunately as I said previously i think this is here to stay, unfortunately
It sucks

eager parrot
#

Idiocracy is the future if AI takes over everything, from creative work to analytical work and otherwise.

blazing depot

I mean

#

You know what determines who gets to the job interview stage at most major companies in the US, right vivikek

#

AI algorithms be like

eager parrot
#

yep 😔

blazing depot
#

(Yes, I watched Last Week Tonight's latest episode)

trim flicker
#

And yeah people are already creating cosplayers, onlyfans models and whatever tf using AI lol
It's not only an art thing

#

Think a couple days ago someone created fake images of a protest in France with the officers hugging people

#

It didn't get as much attention I think but this will 100% be used on similar ways that are way more harmful

#

So yeaahhhhhhh

vital needle
#

The worst part is sentience discourse and people going "oh wow this is just like movie guys watch out haha" because it is pretending there is anything to get excited about when in reality things will just become worse and society will get worse and our lives will get worse just like they have been since at least 2008

#

I don't like when people have hope or look at the positive side of things

#

There is no hope

#

Fuck hope

eager parrot
#

that is an extremely pessimistic, cynical perspective, but sadly not wrong when it comes to the direction AI is taking.

I just open twitter to see this, this is fire i love it

it's almost like they want civil unrest

#

totally unsurprising that Apple would maliciously comply with regulations

#

kind of sad since they already were using USB-C on iPad Pro and all their Macbook lineup anyway without some of this chipped MFi nonsense.

hoary charm
#

nah thats a good thing

#

the usb standard is fucked

#

for example, my macbook usb-c cable that comes in the charger, can't do data, despite being a usb cable

#

apple isnt the bad guy there, the usb consortium is for allowing the usb standard to be fractured by features instead of mandating every cable support the full feature set

blazing depot
#

You're saying that as if there's an evil USB Inc. out there somewhere. It's by no means difficult to adhere to regulations and have USB cables that do both reliably. Apple just doesn't fucking want to.

#

for example, my macbook usb-c cable that comes in the charger, can't do data, despite being a usb cable

This is entirely and 100% on Apple.

Unfortunately i know of many kids who just keep watching tiktok all day without supervision

blazing depot

Rotted brains

trim flicker
#

But they're kids who imo shouldn't even a phone, let alone be left with one unsupervised

#

Bad parenting

#

🤷‍♂️

hoary charm
#

they're basically enforcing a standard common feature set that'll work with the phone, something the usb standard doesn't do

trim flicker
#

Yeah the usb standard sucks can't even blame em on that

keen nest
#

fucking apple lmao

blazing depot
#

That's... a load of bs, lol. The very reason that standard even exists and is even written into law is Apple themselves fucking around too much.

hoary charm
#

it literally isnt bs lmao, the usb standard is a fractured mess

blazing depot
#

You can't go and laud Apple for "fixing" a problem they themselves have caused by just going full circle and back to what initially caused it

trim flicker
#

Even if the usb standard sucks, having non certified cables be worse just because they can is awful tho

hoary charm
#

not necessarily. they can't guarantee a third party cable is rated for whatever power draw the phone needs

#

because again, the usb standard is a mess and allows cable manufacturers to pick and choose what features from the standard that they implement

blazing depot
#

So Apple doing the exact same thing is somehow better because... well, I guess because Apple did it. Fantastic logic.

#

If you can't see this is literally just Apple doing what they did before regulations were introduced and making you buy new chargers and cables for every new generation of phone I honestly can't help you

hoary charm
#

what are you even on about
the only way apple "caused" any of this is because making sure their stuff /just works/ is their entire MO, something the barebones usb standard cannot guarantee

#

i didnt say a thing about profit or anything, only saying its a good thing from a tech/compatibility standpoint

vital needle
#

You're trading the possibility that it may be not good enough for the certainty that it will not be

blazing depot
#

They already sell Official Apple Charger Cable™️ that work. Those are completely fine and there is no valid reason to artificially limit all non-official third party cables other than money.

trim flicker
#

Yeah unfortunately usb standards are fucking awful so having a way to tell if they work properly with iphones is okay imo, I just don't bite limiting other cables just for the lolz
