basically in Japan every Pokémon name is spelled in katakana, but they have a version of the Japanese name in Latin letters too that they use sometimes in merch and stuff
Pikachu is spelled Pikachu in Japan too but the katakana says ピカチュウ which you'd normally transliterate as Pikachuu—it's just a vowel length thing in this case
for ||Rayquaza|| it's more complicated because the official spelling in Latin letters looks like they were trying to do a multi-language wordplay by making it look like ||ray+quasar|| even if the pronunciation of ||quasar|| isn't that close to ||kuuza||

gen 7 had ultra beasts, Pokémon species from a parallel dimension
gen 8 had gigantamax pokémon, aka oversized Pokémon that got that way by living near this mysterious energy source
we're in gen 9 now and in theory there's ||paradox Pokémon, aka Pokémon species from the past/future that ended up on present day because scarlet/violet story spoilers, but we haven't seen it yet in the anime||

i always had the impression that stuff like, say, motor vehicles were a thing in gen 1 already, it just didn't show up in the game cause you were traveling by foot (also imagine trying to get across paved roads in the 4 greys of a game boy screen)

thankfully they switched to the Italian names in Johto already iirc

the way it works, using a grass tera-type sudowoodo as an example, is that it turns it into a mono grass type defensively but you keep all the original types offensively in addition to the new type. in case one of the original types is the same as the new type, you get an additional same type attack bonus (you know how moves of the same type as the Pokémon using them are 1.5x stronger? you'd get 2x in this case)
