I go up to R outside of puc events as well, but upgrade Rs only when they are prisms and within puc events (or when I'm forced to by a mission).

I haven't crunched the numbers, so it may not be optimal, but it worked well enough for me in SSJYP and SSYG.

You want at least R1 themes as fast as possible, to be able to meet the monthly challenges.

I used an upgraded C as fodder as well though, if a better one came along.

Recommend is fine. When upgrading high R cards, you might want to manually pick As and above, because C and B will rarely work (unless you upgraded them first). But the game displays the probability of success anyway. Don't go for low unless you absolutely have to.
