There's a specific reason why it happens (player's side, not game related), I think you'll pin-point why soon enough. And right after then why I'm not revealing it out in the open :p

Cause was what I suspected and nothing to be concerned about. It's not ST related, not security related, account and progress are not at risk. Devs can safely ignore the report. It's a very specific and rare circumstance but it may cause a slight embarrassment so I refuse to reveal it. OP got the info he needed and it ended there for me.
Players who do encounter the authentication error, simply restart Steam client. That's it. It should become pretty obvious why it happens and how to avoid it.

If it's so specific and rare then you figuring it out immediately is great. The are lots of people who have these types of hang ups, I can't think of any situation where restarting the steam client is embarrassing
