Finding your own creative path

Hello guys, I have a quick question and sort of a small vent out.

How did y’all found your path or your workflow in terms of creating music?
I’m kinda struggling myself cuz I’ve realized that some of the best work I’ve done comes from trying to replicate or imitate a whole song but I’m the process I end up making something completely different and from myself. It’s just that sometimes I get into my head and feel like I need to do something completely from scratch in order to be original or to sort of prove that I’m a “real producer”. It’s like “your not making music if your not getting everything from your own head” or “you are just going the easy patch by doing something that is already done”

If any of y’all could share some experience or give some word of advice I’ll be appreciated.

personally i use reference tracks (tracks that inspire me and sound similar) i also often have the progress of making something that's different. In my opinion it's not "unoriginal", i mean you still came up with the song yourself, so i don't see a problem in getting inspiration, as it mostly only makes your music better.

I just get some vocals in my daw and build from some chords and then try to build a full track from vocals and chords

Yeha your right. I think at the end of the day all music comes from inspiration or imitation of someone else’s

That’s really interesting. Do u just go with the flow and do what ever gets into your head or do u already have a style or idea in mind?

I listen to a song and if I get a good idea I make a cover remix I release it on spotify and other streaming platforms

There’s no right or wrong answer. That may not be what you are looking for but hear me out….Every moment you sit at the DAW is new so don’t over think the process. Anything that inspires you should allow you to flow. So don’t worry about making things from scratch. Use lyrics, a melody loop, a sample, start with drums. There are no rules bro. Just create have fun and be free.

Sometimes you might not have an idea or reference in mind sometimes you do. If the idea forms into something completely different then that’s ok too.

Being unique in your music is part being able to understand all your tools and general concepts, and then using them in your own music based on personal preference. For example, say you really like the way a kick and snare sound together when kick is slightly panned 10% left and snare is 10% right. Subtle things that you like that stack, creating your unique sound

Exactly its just to create music that you think sounds good
With your music you are your own biggest fan so if you dont like a song its best to just scrap it
