It sounds to me like there are a lot of other sounds on top of the piano. The piano itself sounds like it's EQ'd to be mostly mids.
As far as free piano VSTs go, Soundpaint 1928 Steinway is good
I think it's automated to cut the volume immediately after the note ends as well, so there's no sustain. The arrangement also contains a lot of ghost notes.

The sound itself i believe is リリースピアノなし (translates to no release piano. not sure what it's called in English sorry) from Roland Zenology (I think at least... I know for sure they do use it though). If you don't have zenology, find a similar sounding piano and turn the release all the way off.
If you can't tell, it's also really processed.
It sounds like it has multiband compression (ott).
For the cool warped effect, it's just automated lowpass or level, or the chord progression is played in reverse order, rendered, and re-reversed
