A big thing with why people go for old cars is because of the electronics as well, old cars are almost totally mechanical so it's just you and what you feel from the car when driving, and if anything goes wrong it's an easy mechanical fix. In all honesty the Rhino is a good plane and it got the Navy past a really bad time period. The 1990’s decimated Naval Aviation and the Super Hornet was the best of what was left after the dust settled.

The issue I have with it is that the integration of the Hornet just killed so many individual communities in Naval Aviation. Attack. Gone. Fighter. Gone.

Now we’ve got one airframe trying to carry the weight of the Attack and Fighter communities and it’s simply unable to do the job as well as the planes we would have for if the communities remained separate.

The Tomcat 21 would have made a superior fighter and the A-6F would have made a superior attack plane.

Instead we’ve got a plane trying to do both roles and the striking power of a carrier air wing is less because of it.

The Rhino is good and has risen to the tasks it has been given… but the Grumman alternatives could have been so much better.

weren't the tomcats dismantled and they're crucial sweep control components shredded in an effort to contain any spare parts flow into Iran? Also the fact that the plane became relatively obsolete and was kind of unreliable. It was also massive for carrier operations, got a cool close up view of it myself at the USS Hornet museum up near San Francisco (although its really just an aluminum husk). Still a legendary aircraft though, forever iconic

The plane was far from obsolete. The 2006 F-14D Tomcat had capabilities that the 2006 Super Hornet (the plane replacing the Tomcat) did not.

They weren’t as advanced because they weren’t updated. A modernized Tomcat would be superior to the Rhino.

The Tomcats were old and they never got the spare parts support they needed. It was very common for key parts to be pulled off of planes coming off of cruise to be put onto planes going on cruise.

When they had the proper spare support they were on point. As a matter of fact during the last Tomcat cruise they two Tomcat squadrons had better maintenance per man hour numbers than the Hornet.
