Keep in mind drones are so influential that the marines have talked about having a “drone specialist” for every squad. This is how the army has squads laid out. I’m not sure if it’s any different in the corps but I only know the army version lol

but marines are usually not going to go against mbts, their missions are against insurgents and pirates. their tactics have to be a way to counter entrenched defenders in apartment buildings and compounds. until we mount a machine gun to a drone, we're not going to get anything game-changing beyond visuals

Well tbf for an infantryman, especially anyone in command like squad leaders, PL’s, PSG’s, RTO’s, etc. having eyes on visual of the opfor is a massive help. I have little experience with it but being able to see the enemy before they see you opens up so many tactical possibilities

And in Ukraine rn, Ukrainians have made drones that can carry bombs. So it’s getting pretty close to mounting a machine gun lol.

@lyric bone in WW2 the role or aircraft as a decisive thing on the battlefield itself was huge, but it just quite simply isn't now. As I said, aircraft cannot play the role of artillery. They can carry some big ordinance yes, but using it on combat troops on the Frontline isn't really smart from the tactical viewpoint. They have range to destroy things outside the view or artillery and go for targets that need pinpoint accuracy and immediate destruction. They can perform effective combat missions but they are not the same as arty, they are used for a different purpose and while being important, the role of a fighter isn't as big as that of having good artillery support

We've seen Ukraine do pretty good with artillery only for the last few months. There is no fighters on their side in the air as of now.

I have seen the destruction of artillery pieces from both sides but that means very little. Pretty sure my average life expectancy in my wartime position is some couple of tens of seconds. Obviously they will be targeted but as far as I see, if you had no artillery but some 30-40 planes, those planes cannot add the numbers that the artillery can add to the fight. You cannot fight a modern war with planes only, but you can make it work with artillery only as long as enemy fighters are being held down to some degree

Aircraft can do a great deal of things. Air superiority, CAS (funny, how many times I've had to mention this), recon (given you have such aircraft), strategic bombing (same with recon), CAS with strategic bombers (America has done that, you know), and some other roles I can't think up of off the top of my head. Meanwhile, artillery does 1) target bombardment and 2) counter-battery fire. Aircraft can still do those two jobs.

Yes, I agree that you can do a great deal with planes but we've yet to see an example of all of this in a fight between two modern armies. Whatever the US has done, has been against nations with armies made up of people with 0 previous combat experience, poor strategics and leadership structure and old equipment. While I won't downplay that the US military is good, it's been fighting against farmers since the end of WW2. Also to mention the usage of artillery is pretty hard it a war where there is no Frontline. That's why their fighters are being more useful.

The war is still fought on the Frontline and artillery is what is truly holding that Frontline together. As said, in a modern fight, the purpose of fighters would be counter battery fire, precision bombing valuable targets and to counter enemy aircraft.

Don't get me wrong, without airpower, it's very hard to win a fight but on the ground, the work of the artillery will always the decisive thing on the battlefield. It's cheaper, it puts a lot more destruction in a bigger area than what modern fighters could with the amount they generally carry and overall just generally easier to deploy. Fighters are also the targets of the first strikes of the enemy as we saw in Ukraine. Either way both are needed and both do very important work on the battlefield.

I wouldn't want to fight in a war without fighters but Ukraine is handling it so far, which is what I base my claim on in the first place. But yes, no doubt they'd have a harder time had the Russians their fighters in the air

That's true, but CAS usually works as flying artillery, that is as tactical bombardment of the enemy. These aircraft still carry a wide amount of munitions. If we were to take the SU-25, for example, it has a few weapons. Just a few.

That's not something you want to do, it helps you be effective in battle. You still gained credits, but only a premium will make large amounts at that tier so if you have one of those use it for grinding credits

Um, it sorta depends. I run NJ flag, with Georgia and Ulrich (USN simp here). Really, if I had them and I wanted variety I could run NJ, Ulrich, and Polo since that's pretty strong.

Guess you could run NJ Ulrich Ark Royal, but you need to get the timing real good for Ark Royal since NJ reloads in about 20 seconds, but Ark does not without a bunch of fast reloading planes

Thing is, you can't just slap a VG ship into the backliner spot (of course) unless you have a retroed DDG like Anshan or Chang Chun, but even then, some ships have somededicated spots in the fleet. For example, when Ulrich is not the flag ship she shoots 50% at the cost of a 45% less dmg debuff. This actually works since she produces a ton of DPM with this set-up. San Francisco is different as well. When SF is in the VG flagship, she takes less dmg, and in the middle, she heals. In the back end of the VG, she and her comrades deal more dmg (do run her in the back; the tanking and the healing isn't as good as the dmg buff)
