The D model went out at the top of its game. But the killed funding for it in the early 1990’s and only bought 55 of them.

Cheney was Secretary of Defense. He called it 60’s technology and a jobs program so he killed any talk of the Navy buying more. It was supposed to be replaced by a navalized F-22 but that got cancelled. At that point the Navy was desperate because the intruder was being retired (it’s replacement was also cancelled) and the existing Hornets and Tomcats were getting old. McDonnell Douglas offered a new Hornet (in reality almost a entirety new plane) as a replacement for the Intruder and Tomcat and while it wasn’t as good as either planes it was replacing it was good enough to get by. So basically the Super Hornet is the best of what was left.

To be fair to the Super Hornet it is a decent plane and the naval aviators who fly her have done a phenomenal job with her. That being said she is not as good as dependent dedicated strike and fighter aircraft would be. But she is a whole lot cheaper.

The Tomcat 21 would have been better but that ship has long sailed.
