I think part of my interest is that while I’m a huge fan of the old EU and I’m not thrilled that Disney shitcanned all of it and overwrote it with new stuff, there are things in the periphery that I can kinda slot into my “old EU legends headcanon” like Doctor Aphra or whatever, and since THR occupies a slot in the timeline that even the old EU didn’t touch, I can slot it into my headcanon if I like it

I generally like the new canon but I really like that THR is its own, totally new thing that's totally separate from the Skywalker saga.

I started reading the HR with just the “adult” books and found it kind of unsatisfying because so many characters seem to have important stories outside those books. Then I gave those so called kids books a chance and I like them better than the “adult” books cause they are just more fun and have a wider range of characters

And, excellent taste with the porter hilt lol

I really hope it gets a legacy

But yeah those YA books were what really hooked me, they’re shorter too so not as much of a slog to read

Im listening to the audiobook for THR Light of the Jedi, I’m about 2 chapters in. I like that the narrator actually does unique voices for the characters and it’s got sound effects and music, it’s a bit more immersive than the narrator just reading text off the page.

I’m a little ways into the High Republic ‘Light of the Jedi’ audiobook and it’s pretty neat I guess? Like it’s juggling a bunch of characters but it’s not overwhelming, but I also have like 9 hours to go in the book. I don’t think “the impact” countdown has fully counted down yet. Marc Thompson keeps everything engaging and I like it.

the countdown feels a little weird when I stop and think about it, like we’ve got Jedi on the ground on planets or in orbit of other moons in space stations when there’s under an hour until stuff hits the fan, and it feels like their response time is super duper fast from “oh snap there’s a problem” to “arriving in the system and evacuating people and responding to incoming debris” especially if the countdown to impact is under an hour. I’m not letting it derail my enjoyment and I’m willing to handwave it as being a much longer timeframe than the book is letting on, but the back of my head is noticing it.

Yeah, but it’s not unlike the rest of Star Wars where hyperspace travel just kinda takes as long as the plot needs it to

Is it bad that I think that’s as it should be.

To my limited understanding of science, whatever hyperspace is, it’s not realistic.

Therefore it should totally assist in timing things for the plot. 😅

I mean that’s kind of how every science fiction show/series does faster than light travel. Only the expanse books try to be realistic with weeks/months of travel time, but even then the show dropped that cause no one wants to watch half a season of people doing mundane ship activities while they fly to their destination

Right, but it kind of feels like a slow motion asteroid strike against multiple targets that takes as much or as little time as it needs to for the plot to move. Like, it works I guess, it just feels weird when you stop and look at the bigger picture.

In my experience, books set in the real world don’t always mention the full make/model of cars either.
They might provide a color or a general descriptor (e.g. jeep) but otherwise the vehicle is open to interpretation by the reader.

Funnily enough I'm reading a book right now where the main character likes to drive race cars to relax, and she is all like "OMG IT'S A FERRERO ROCHER 5023X" and I, not being a car person, have no idea what she's talking about.

But the car isn't the point. Her excitement is.

And that is easy to understand and connect with, because it's how I feel when I see the Folio Society edition of Beowulf in someone's library when I'm at their house

If there's something important that happened elsewhere, it gets summarized. This has been the case since The Rising Storm.

People swore up and down that you "needed" to read Defy the Storm to enjoy Temptation and that's just not true

Yeah, it almost be like telling someone they had to read the Silmarillion before starting the Hobbit or LotR

There are definitely some legit critiques to be made for how certain aspects of THR were handled, but at the end of the day, it's an incredibly ambitious multi-media, cross-platform initiative with a huge number of interlocking pieces

And they've managed to pull it off pretty spectacularly, in my opinion

I’m excited for Trials! Maybe when I have free time years from now I can go back and read all of it

I've been a completionist from the beginning, but truly, it's a TON of material!

I don't necessarily recommend completionism for everyone who wants to experience THR. The beauty of it is that, like Discworld, or any long-running superhero comic, you don't have to read EVERY SINGLE STORY to enjoy the stories you do read.

There really aren't many projects like THR out there. It's truly not like a typical series like the New Jedi Order or ACOTAR or the Grishaverse or Game of Thrones or Murderbot, etc. It's much more than a simple linear reading experience, and that's what makes it unique and special. But that doesn't mean you can't also enjoy parts of it as a linear reading experience (i.e. just reading the adult novels)

I'm having one of those maddening "tip of my tongue" moments - Many years ago I read a scifi novel, where the premise was aliens would abduct humans from earth who were entertainers - dancers, musicians, etc. And these alien "talent scouts" would then employ them on some kind of galactic entertainer circuit. It was absurdist comedy along the lines of Hitchhiker's Guide.

My google searches for the themes of humans being abducted for alien amusement is coming back mostly with some "interesting" results.

Okay, found this from the American Booksellers Association: The U.S. and European Union struck a trade deal on Sunday, July 27, resulting in a 15% baseline tariff on most EU goods, as reported by Reuters. In addition, the White House announced that it would impose a 25 percent tariff on India beginning August 1. In the past few weeks, the US has made trade deals with Indonesia, Japan, the U.K., and Vietnam (see details at the bottom of this page). Whether these deals will exempt book production is still unclear, though the administration is expected to release more information to address all the recent deals that have been made in the coming days.

So I finally finished the last of the High Republic books (Trials of the Jedi) don’t worry, I’m not dropping any spoilers. My question is to the other fans of THR that have also read all the books. I feel like there is a huge jump/gap between the fall of the Path of the Open Hand, and the creation of the Nihil. The whole Evereni Ro family timeline is missing. Ends with Marda and then Jumps to Marchion and the Nihil. Did I miss a book somewhere? There are some mentions in the books of Asgar and the grandmother, which my guess is that it’s Marda, but I’m missing everything in between. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in advance.

Libby is not a ton cheaper, though. An ebook that costs you and me $20 or less costs the library $60 or more, and can only be lent a finite number of times before they have to buy another license for it.

Only one that ||is on the teams that I didn’t really find their hilts interesting are the twins Ceret and Terec. Also one of my favorite phase 2 Jedi Silandra Sho technically makes an appearance with her shield being with Raeth||

FR I just hate bending the spine on hardcover books, I did a number on my nice LOTR before someone pointed it out saying I must enjoy reading it

Ever since I’ve been a bit paranoid about how much I use my hardcover copies, and try to use my nook copies instead

Buuuut now that I’ve started I can’t wait 2 months to read the second half 🤦‍♂️

The spines on hardcovers are generally quite durable unless you're really abusing them. It typically takes dozens of reads before they start to come apart. (source: years of library work)

I do have reading copies and fancy copies for my favorite books quite often, but... Books are meant to be read!

My spouse bought me a first book club edition book from my favorite author from the 70s and like, I do have a cheapie paperback but I'm probably gonna read the "fancy" one because it's cool

I 100% agree, I’ve also just got this perfectionist collectors side that it hurts me to see my nice red leather LOTR in anything but pristine condition. I think that’s why my parents were like “wtf” when I insisted on being gifted phantom menace toys when ep1 came out, but then kept them unopened and in a display cabinet

And then they gave those toys away 😢

My teen self somehow knew they’d be worth something twenty years later, but my parents don’t think like that

Eh, I’m more upset about the like thousand SW cards, but even then they’d not have had any monetary value like Pokémon cards

My main regret is splitting the SW books with my brother rather than taking them all

So now I just have a random ass assortment of legends books

Whew, Trials chapter 22 ||Porter is a stone cold badass…and that ending. He casually shows off a shoto, then doesn’t even light his main saber for more than a split second, and that’s to execute Viess. “Tell her I said hello” damn that was cold lol||

I liked how ||they finally started describing Burry’s saber as a huge two hand hilt, I don’t think I ever remember any other author describing it like that||
