I would honestly not worry too much about going fancy with a build. What you're looking for first is something that will 100% work.

I'd suggest starting with #td2-build-advice > 📌 pinned-message > spreadsheet > builds > standard red DPS.
That is the one people want when they say to bring "the standard" or "a red dps".

After you get confident with the Raid, you can start to experiment. But learning the basics is a good idea first.

You want the highest combination of chance and damage. CHC is capped at 60%. If your looking at "Do I want 6% CHC or 12% CHD" multiply your options together and go with the higher option. So for example 54 chc and 162 CHD vs 60 chc and 150 CHD would be:

Just keep an eye out in the lfg raid channel for someone saying LF(x) (looking for x number of players) RV(x) (raid voice channel x) DH (dark hours)/IH (iron horse). When you see a group with open spots just jump in and ask who you need to add, then add them on uplay. Make sure your name in the discord channel matches uplay. Let people know your new so they can explain what you need to do and what your role is for each boss. Most people have no issues walking people through for the first time as long as your upfront about it. Ideally you'd have a dps build ready to go with +50 chc and +150 chd

I really dislike jumping into random open worlds with max directives as well. Very annoying. The pistolero and no regen one always makes me fall back to my umbra gr9 steady handed build.

The map directive is the one that impacts the game the least for me. Pistolero limits the builds you can use, as well as cool skills. Special ammo can be annoying but I generally run no map, special ammo and rushers.

During missions Fog of War is 100% always off, but in the LZ? NPC's have a nasty habit of running 5km away and taking pot-shots.

I've always got Music off too, but that's just because podcasts/music are on instead.

mine is a high-end one because I like the convenience of DCH, so slightly lower max damage than Tips or A&8 (still good enough to 1-shot elites in 4-player heroic, struggles a bit in 4-player legendary): Chainkiller, 2nd piece W&H, 1 Airaldi, Foxes, DCH, the Gift - all with HSD & handling. Skills are repair drone and decoy, weapons are mantis, bakers dozen, D50 w/Ranger

ammo regen from sharpshooter, the repair drone plays well with no regen and cool skills, and of course the decoy reset from mantis

Technically yes but you have endgame which includes getting your builds together farming countdown for expertise and pieces for builds. You can do summit. Level up your watch do raids. Do the manhunts etc

You also can max oit your gears stats
