Honestly, garageband on mac is more than enough
Something you should be spending more time on are the vsts
Also, cakewalk isn't on mac
But if you mean PC as in window-OS, a good list of free stuff:
fl trial (you can't open your own projects, making saving redundant), lmms, sound bridge, cakewalk (not beginner friendly), ableton lite (you can only use 16 tracks), and Reaper (as long as it isn't for commercial use)
These are all solid and more than enough to make good music. While they each have advantages over each other in convenient workflows, most of your music quality will come from 3rd-party vsts
