#Ideas for new AI tasks and routines

The neighbors so far don't feel like they're actually living a actual life. They just do the same couple of tasks over and over again, so I'd like to throw out a few ideas in here to help enhance their routine. Part of the fun of HN is being able to just watch the neighbors live their lives normally and it just doesn't feel that way in HN2 at the moment.

Officer Keith: Checks his car or radio on occasion and chats with his team, Reapplies police tape on occasion whenever he sees you cut it (outside, not on the stairs), investigates Mr. Peterson's house by looking at photos and inside cabinets, and can rest.

Gerda: Make it so she ACTUALLY bakes, making different types of treats to put into the display case like the croissants, donuts, and the pie (which can be thrown at ais or ais can even throw it at you to obscure your vision). That's not all however, if Gerda makes enough treats that her display case is full she will take a break from baking. Playing with Imbir with a cat toy, watering her plants (even turning back on the water valve if the player turns it off), going outside and sitting in the shade, and maybe just getting a well deserved rest. I got the image of like Quentin somehow asking for Gerda to make something and taking advantage of her being busy baking to go upstairs. This by extension will allow the food to get burned and possibly cause a fire, letting Gerda use her fire extinguisher again instead of it just being for show.

Otto: Re-enable his wood crafting and target practice task, if he has placed any traps, he'd go around the house and make sure occasionally that they're still there and working. Allow him to admire his taxidermy on occasion (and even notice if you've done something to one of the bears), maybe he'd watch a bit of TV or listen to the radio, and like other ais, let him rest (but have his rifle with him, cause of course he'd sleep with it in hand.)

Mayor: READD THE JUKEBOX, it was nice to get the option to make Mayor scared, dance, or even go to sleep. Mayor should be able to give Skipper a dog treat or even some water, it'd be cute to see him do so. He should be able to sit down and read from a few magazines, perhaps a boat show based one. Maybe he'd tend to the flowers in the greenhouse and let him sleep too.

Mr. Peterson: Allow him to work on his car and peer out windows and opened doors with his binoculars. A actually sad ai task I imagined is that if he still has his family photo in his room is that he'd sometimes come over and pick it up, looking it over and sighing sadly. Perhaps he'd go by the attic hatch and also try to shush Aaron as well. Another creative idea calling back to the old trailer is that he'd sometimes head outside to shoo away some crows.

Imbir: Let them wander around after the bakery chapter, occasionally stopping back by the bakery to rest. I like the idea of them jumping into windows and out of leaf bushes randomly as you go by (like a funny jumpscare)

That's all i can think of so far, please let me know what you all think and what ai tasks you'd add.

#

Note: I would have added Guest tasks but since he's more of a stalker ai i don't think he'd have tasks.

Another good suggestion

#

They REALLY need to rework the AI task system

sick plaza
#

This is a great suggestion
I do have to say though that changing the current AI task/routine system fully would change a LOT about the game and the way its played, perhaps maybe too much
I think the concept of the Neighbors doing different tasks depending on how far in the day you are is good for the campaign, its execution is just flawed. This suggestion can indeed work in tandem with the task progression, and apply perfectly to free mode

makes everything too predictable

#

the current gameplay just isnt fun especially on replays

sick plaza
# split marsh I dont like the task progression system at all

I think you misunderstand what the task progression system is and why it exists
The task progression system as it stands was designed with the game's linearity in mind. As the game takes place over a set amount of days/nights, the AI can't have fully dynamic routines, as there is no fully dynamic day/night cycle that can be had. In that case, the task progression system exists to give the AIs a routine they can follow as their level progresses - but its execution and implementation into the overall game design is flawed.

#

It's not nessacarily the system itself's fault, but rather its implementation into the game

#

The system needs to exist due to the way the narrative is structured and the way the game was designed around it, but what we CAN do is improve its implementation and improve upon its design

#

That's a lot of big words, so TL;DR - you're looking at it the wrong way

#

I agree with this post

#

it seems like they scripted their tasks puzzles wise from one puzzle to another

sick plaza
#

That's exactly what they did

All it effectively does is camp

# split marsh The AI task systems seems to have been made to make the AI artificially look sma...

Not necessarily what it does
The current system seems to be designed with linearity in mind, it seems to be modeled around a specific kind of playthrough as well. The AI isn't made to look artificially smarter, it's really quite obvious they're not really "smart" once you see Gerda going between the stove and dough for 3 minutes straight tbh lol
The design philosophy for this, as well as the entirety of Act 1, was to likely streamline the HN gameplay into a more linear and structured experience. To a degree, they did the right thing, but they went too far in all the places where it didn't need to go that far and not far enough in others

#

Honestly I can understand if EGS just kind of don't want to touch Act 1 with how messy the game design is

split marsh
#

I just dont like the idea as a whole since it removes the element of surprise

#

I want each playthrough to have something diffrent happen

#

Having a system that makes the AI do certain things at certain times just makes everything too predictable and boring

sick plaza
#

I tried to offer the best compromise I could

split marsh
#

I believe task progression is fundimentally flawed and its better to have a diffrent system

#

Ive only seen one person ither than you defend the idea

#

Which shows how unpopular the system is

I have oddly fond memories of watching Mr. P work on his car while I hide under the staircase.

Also new tasks for janitor and aN ACTUAL TASK for the librarian

strong mulch
#

I should have addressed the DLCs too, yeah.

#

in fact give me a second

#

No actually school DLC has a Better ai than the guest ...really It's reaaaally difficult to escape janitor...
The Librarian on the other hand..jeez..that old hag must have dementia or something😂

#

Well i think that considering the dogs too its not that bad overal..i mean..It at least offers a challenge

#

And then in My opinioni It makes sense that he Is fast cause ..i mean..he has pretty long legs that giù Is taller than a giraffe☠️

#

Because hhe Is the final neighbor

#

So he has to be slightly harder

#

Even if It doesn't make much sense

#

Am i the only One Who prefers the ambiente music than the Chase music in back to School?

#

I mean It's so sad and nostalgic

#

It makes U feel bad for the janitor

strong mulch
#

Janitor should do cleaning, check the furnace area, checking up on his dogs and check the classrooms (especially when he notices you solving puzzles)

dreamy scarab
#

Oh

#

However i really like the back to School dlc

#

It's beautiful

#

Perfect location,music antagonista and story

strong mulch
#

Librarian should wheel her book cart around (and even Quentin can too), sit at her desk and check through a book documenting book turn in fees...im not sure what else

dreamy scarab
#

It ties with hn base game but without being necessary to understand the story ...Just like any DLC should be

#

Yes however i hate that DLC cause at least After back to School U made the janitor Happy again while at the end of the library U solved nothing

#

Like the story Is Just:
Quentin enters in the secret zone of the library tries to grab the forest protections book but everything starts to cover in ink and he rurns away

#

While in back to School U see a poor lonely man destroyed by the Loss of all his students cause of the guest cult and that was once a good principal..and U help him to appreciate his dogs and understand he Is not alone in the end..It feels..wonderful..like U actually made something useful for. Him

#

BAHAHA naughty boy

#

U emphatize with the janitor..and he Is the only neighbor in the entire game Who Is actually good

strong mulch
dreamy scarab
#

He Is not even broken cause he kicks U put of the school not because he has secrets to Hide but because U can't stay there It's not a public Place for u

#

I think back to School Is really undertated

strong mulch
#

you...you shouldnt be allowed to do that.
