why is nicky in hello neighbor afraid of shopping, and can the thing manifest into different types of fear

in wtrb we see nicky getting haunted by the thing but in this sense, it’s actually peterson which is the type of fear

is it possible that the thing manifests in different forms and when he see him, the characters see their fears and not what we actaully see

the thing may not actually exist (which he doesnt) , but is a visualization when fear start’s to come to certain characters at specific times. For instance, nicky would be dealing with the trauma of peterson in his basement while peterson may be dealing with the trauma of his wife getting into a car crash, or Mya dying.

Tehnically i'm not sure why in the game but the books have their explanation on it.
Basically Nicky's grandmother once left him at a supermarket, when he was like 3 years old iirc, Since She was sort of spiritual and believed Nicky to be a "wandering soul"
