nicky escapes the house, and the son escapes
neighbor puts up missing poster for son and daughter, filled with grief and trauma
years later, nicky moves back in to raven brooks, into his old home
the trauma of being in the basement still haunts him, so he lays down, and goes through self therapy, beating his fears, and leaving the trauma, and the neighbor behind him

I know, I know, that type of thing gotta work for the narrative and all but making the townsfolk violent and unforgiving would not only fit in with the nature of the town (like, no wonder there are cults and whatnot if those people are savages), not only would it humanize them instead of just making them heavy baggage that gets in the way, but it'd also nail down that the antagonists MUST be careful, because dare they slip up, they'll be executed right away
