It goes SN, they abandon Nicky and are in the lobby, then HE where they get trapped in the sandbox and then escape, and then hnvr where they actually do save Nicky. It'll make more sense once you see more of the game

What I really wish for the HN franchise is that it doesn't constantly invalidate parts of the story.
Namely, that's always what I hear, that parts of the story become invalid.
Instead there should be parallel universes like Five Nights at Freddy's where the books and some spinoff games like FNaF AR are just there to explain parts of the story.
Of course, parts of the story are also invalidated, but not as extreme.
For example, the Fazbear Frights books take place in their own universe, but explain parts of the story.
That's how it should be in my opinion with the HN franchise.

for example, Nicky remembers a giant fence, but maybe the fence wasn't that big irl. and the house also wasn't that big. I guess when you're a kid, every house and room and item looks bigger than what it is.
but probably him escaping, and Neighbor going back instead of chasing him, to get Aaron, was true. I guess Aaron also attempted to escape, and did so, since Neighbor pulls him back in the beginning of HN2.
