Maps are split into 4 "zones" indicated by which keycard you need to open them (you spawn in 0, then need a keycard for each zone after that).

Sea of Thieves has a leaderboard based on how much you earn for a specific group in that period. At the end, everyone within one of 4 bounds gets a reward.
So, like, the top X players get the top reward and the 3 rewards below it.

But the main thing is everyone has a set of rewards they progress through at their own pace. So your next reward is the same regardless of when you get it, then it moves on to the next in the list.

So then the rewards aren't time locked, but you have to put in the effort to keep getting them, you can just do it in any leaderboard period you want.

A timed SN leaderboard with rewards would be nice, so my point is a similar system where you don't lose out on a reward for not placing that period (you just place next period and get it then instead, with the downside of it'll take you a little longer to get everything).
