If you didn't already know, keys always spawn past a keycard door.
So you spawn in level 0, then open doors to 1, 2 and 3. Keys never spawn in 0.
Each area will always spawn at least one key, and they can spawn in anything you can open, or on top (so, never on the floor or in a spot that doesn't make sense, like on a lamp or something).
On top of that, certain areas almost always have keys.
In the neighbor case map, map 1 in the custom game list, almost every game there is a key in the bathroom past keycard door 1.
Rarely two, occasionally zero, but most games it has one.

Same with the greenhouse, which can spawn up to 3 (at least, I've never seen more than that), and has 4 areas where keys can be.

As you play more, you'll get the hang of where to look.

It's kind of buggy, but can be sort of fun to explore the routes for the first time.

Oh! Some tips!
Every map has 4 levels to it: 0 to 3.
1, 2 and 3 are the areas behind keycard doors of the same number.
All that is obvious, but where I'm going is that keys never spawn in the 0 area. You have to go through a keycard door to find a key.

There's also red buttons around the maps (only the basement map doesn't have one). They reveal to you the location of every kid (not the neighbour).

And I could write a ton more, but I probably shouldn't make this too long.

If you play a lot, it probably wouldn't take you that long? It needs 327000 XP total on one character.
You'll probably get anywhere from 200-600XP per game, assuming you don't lose immediately. So that's a minimum of 545 games.
And if I did my maths correctly, you'll need to play a max of 5.7 days (time spent in a match) at 600XP for each character you want to be level 100 (this is based on the most time you can spend in a game being 15 minutes).
So you will definitely do it faster or slower, but that gives you a rough idea.

Desync can depend on how individual games handle their networking.
Like, if the Guest player grabbed you in range on their screen and the server said that's OK, then you're getting grabbed from anywhere.
I might be wrong, but I'd have said it's more likely a bug or the game's networking (since your connection is fine) than cheating on PS.

Anybody who's figured out how to bypass a current gen console likely isn't using it to cheat in Secret Neighbor, of all things. They're very secure, and while they're not impenetrable, the people who can do it usually keep it pretty secret.
I'd accept being wrong if there is some way to cheat in games, though.

Desync is an inherent problem in multiplayer games in general. Every game can have it, some games are just better at mitigating it (or desync might not even be a problem for that game). It just gets worse with your connection (which isn't necessarily a problem with your signal, but just getting that signal to the right server).
