Here's how trading cards work

You get 3 by playing the game
Another 3 by buying something on steam (as far as I can remember)

Eventually after that the trading cards will stop coming in, you'll have to make a in-app purchase or buy dlc from the game to allow yourself to get 3 more, trade for more, or just buy one off the market.

Rarely you'll get booster packs that have 3 random cards
