No, the full game artstyle was always planned from the start. Look at old concpet art from the kickstarter period and even older art from before any alpha release.

The alpha art was placeholder material, even the textures, most being stock assets.

It was always meant to be cartoony with a sense of realistic erieness. We can see this in all older builds like even older trailers and concept art showcasing the games planned things (that include the look and feel).

But the game was planned to be more nicer on looks aswell, mainly just more model props and not an actual change in style.

Not exactly that. Really Nikita didnt really have a specific style before the cartoonish one which was made before the pre alphas release. And Nikita said this in alpha 1 stream and previous dev comments from a long time ago this was stated.

And the alphas of HN were full of place holder stock assets. Some art being by nikita and other artist, but they didnt fit nikitas vision on the game which is the current one.

Yeah but Nikita and even other developer logs of the game said that builds mainly pre alpha and alpha 1 had placeholder stock assets and were never meant to fully capture the games look and feel because it didnt fit nikitas vision. Sole models were created by the devs as planning but they were never planning on a fulky realistic artstyle. Even in those builds you can tell with Mr. Petersons design, and the alpha 1 house having the rollercoaster and the rooms planned for when that was going to be the final house, and even previous artworks made before any build of the game was even created.

There were a few things in the main games look that didnt make it like more model props and a more vibrant textures and even more wacky items that are in the files and were never planned to be fully removed. And even way more gameplay features and stuff that also wasnt meant to be removed, just didnt make it with the amount of money and time they had.

And this obviously impacts the future of the franchise in a way.

And horror was never the core of the game. They added the horror aspect because of the premist and that psychological aspect and dream like liminal feel would give the game a better message and have more opportunities for gameplay features to be satisfying, and the game to have an identity.

They promoted that horror and spooky aspect of the game way more in development because of how popular that aspect of the game got, mainly with the promotion of stealth in breaking and entering, solving puzzles, and having to run away from the creepy genius character who is hiding a dark secret in his, mysterious basement. That takes place in the setting like a kind of monster house, summer of 84, and disturbia like feel, in a weird dream like exxagerated fantasy sandbox world. And which is part of why this game became a multimedia franchise with multiple games, books, and a tv series. And while having a recognizable name, art style, and character designs.

And the older edgier jokes like peterson swearing a little more and others they showed whoch I cant say (for obvious reasons) that took inspiration from older cartoony comedy shows and old comic book panels they removed because of it not fitting too well and felt a little out of place and was too much. And the fact that the mod kit you could just make him swear if you want with mods, and the art book had stuff showing and that was a little more mature in rating.

We as the protagonist are going on our bi-yearly tour of the country we live in but breaks down in a strange town that isn't showing up on the map. Putting that to the side we walk down the streets finding them practically barren until we discover, the guest/Forest guardian. We get rushed by this figure when another character rounds the corner and the guest is gone, we then continue on our way exploring the town to discover that the mechanics has been shut down for years, so to get out we will have to wait for either help or find the parts to fix our car ourselves. This leads to us interacting with the town's people building relationships and running into the guest a few times until we eventually finish our car or help arrives. Allowing for us to leave.
