Will HN3 allow the player to inhabit a house in the town that has been abandoned? I think that functionality was planned for RBO previous and it would add a lot more depth to the game so that you can see how the town develops around you. You could decorate the house with items you find around the town, adjust the layout of the house with resources you find, build a vegetable patch to grow food that can give you certain perks etc. Friendly AIs could come visit your house from time to time. During the nighttime, AIs that dislike you could try to sneak into your house on certain nights to steal items. It would be very cool if your character goes to rest of the night and an alarm goes off, you get woken up and then you need to creep around your house in the dark trying to find a character stealing items from your house and catch them.

Why’s that? Having your own house was originally planned in RBO. It would make the town feel much more alive if the AIs came at night to steal from you too. Also you could then upload your house and have friends try to break in and steal items as part of challenges (with the house protected by one of the AIs).

Even though it’s an interesting concept, the gameplay of HN3 is a totally different thing. Look at it more like Outer Wilds, but with much longer timeframe and world around you is simulated in real-time (oppose to being predetermined like in Outer Wilds).

Don’t know where to start, honestly. Of course I am biased to judge, but it’s a crazy step from P1. Team did an amazing job, it’s such an awesome prototype.

It’s an interesting thing to have. But it brings indeed many challenges. Will see if gameplay benefits outweigh the challenges for us.

will characters eventually get their own unique animations to further show their personality? (for example, things like the exercising task in p2 have the characters use the same animation if I’m not mistaken)
It’s hard to say. Especially what is considered “everything”. I personally played at least 10 hours and I did do “everything”. It’s really personal. Simple answer might be 3 to 15 hours. But it reeealy depends on many factors.

There are some pros and cons to it.
Pros:
- you have extra freedom of movement
Cons:
- It really complex mechanic to support and develop
- it takes away players natural freedom of platforming and exploring in unconventional ways. Since climbing do many stuff for you basically. If there is no HN2-style climbing, game got it be built such way so natural platforming is interesting and rewarding, because you feel you actually did it.

trading was one of their ideas for RBO but ofc since the game changed from being multiplayer to single player unless you meant if we could trade with AIs
I'm not sure what you mean by the first con, as it was handled incredibly well in HN2 by the programmers and animators.
I understand how you want unconventional exploration to be a thing, but omitting the feature entirely because of that wish is arguably a bad move (no pun intended) for players.
There was some problems with it, like: You could skip with spam jumping and it would instantly teleport you to the top.

The climbing feature in HN2 feels very nice, in HN1 stacking boxes was sometimes annoying imo
You just see the result and do not know what it took people to develop it.
It’s not about unconventional exploration. HN3 is focused to be a sandbox with total freedom. A game where you can set goals for yourself and achieve them. Game never tries to steer you in any direction or tell you how to do things the “right way”.
Automatic climbing goes against that concept. At least in the form it was in HN2.

my ideal vision of a mantling system given this context would be more like a safe guard, if you slightly miss your jump you can mantle onto the surface and not fall and lose progress, rather than mantling being the way past a obstacle

Well of course, I'm sure it took a lot of time to get it right. Surely the experience from that could be transferred over here, avoiding a lot of the same potholes this time around.
You're saying the game is focussed on being a sandbox with total freedom, and yet when I stand directly in front of something like a small wall - I am not able to mantle/climb on top of it like I would be able to in real-life, thus breaking immersion and, more importantly, limiting me (which also goes against the concept of total freedom).
It's a double edged sword.

Like you should be able to mantle yourself on top of a metal barrel but not be able to mantle yourself on top of chain-link fence.

Although there's nothing really blocked off by chainlink fence in that game so you just can't jump some fences
Yes, I couldn't really think of any examples of tall things that are thin that can block you other than chain-link fences. :P
I think mantling can be done in a right way just to support the player without making it OP like it sometimes was in HN2
As an example, there's a moderately sized fence that you could jump through but you'd need to eg. do a near perfect crouch jump, instead the game could let you mantle said fence
But, make it so that it wouldn't boost your jump height like in HN2, you can only make it through if you already jumped high enough
In HN2 it's only OP because the game checks well above your height if you can climb something
(that and the ocassional bugs like clipping through things)
I don't think the game absolutely needs it but if there is parkour already then I would prefer to have it
In an ideal world, it would be interesting to have P2 with and without mantling and seeing just how much of a difference it makes. Of course, it all depends on whether or not there even is parkour in P2 (P1 didn't have any) - if there isn't, then it's basically pointless to include mantling.
But also since the game is supposed to be a sandbox and you can theoretically do whatever you want then extra freedom of exploration is always welcome

It really depends on how the world is built, but in something like the HN2 alphas it opened up new possibilities for exploration mechanics, like items hidden on various rooftops

one of the biggest complaints people had for hn1 was 'this is a game about breaking into houses why is there parkour'

I have a question about development. Prototype 2 to prototype 3.
If the prototype 2 map is nicely done, why not just build upon the prototype 2 map, adding more npcs and places to explore? Wouldn’t it be more convenient instead of just starting a whole new map?
If that map is so nice, why not just keep improving upon it until the full game releases, then you would have a load of content.

I can't answer for him, but I think it's just because sometimes it's more convenient to redo a map than modify it
Because again, one thing I was still concerned about was the fact that every alpha or build was a different game from each other, and thats why I think it was recieved so poorly by the community.

P3 map will be built off P2, but it still will be changed significantly. As we improving on art style and increasing number of locations and its much more complicated that “just add a house” since we want to be good and not a bunch or random houses 🙂

How about this: What if they make it like Far Cry 4 had it. Where you could climb only places which is marked or something, but the places that aren't marked won't let you climb. Ofc you could mantle still on windows, fences.
That would then still have normal gameplay AND there wouldn't be speedrunners using mantling tactics.

this thought might be contested but i just want hn3 to be a simulation game, instead of just puzzles, its like a viewing game, you cant interact with npcs, and just be a part of the town as a whole, take part in festivals, gets a job, go to prision, ect
I had a HN3 dream where there was a HN3 update of course but there were a lot of Jacob's it was like some silly update and then there would've been some festive update to secret neighbor or something and the end of the trailer said Festive of the Neighbors and it showed all of the neighbor models from every hello neighbor game looking sideways

Hi, Nikita! I have question. Will there be FOV adjust feature where people can choose their fov how they would like to have it, because in HN2 there wasn't any option to change FOV and it was too zoomed in.
But there is an option to change FOV in HN2

Hey Nikita, I always had a problem with HN1 that the only reasonable stackable objects were boxes as there were many of them and it was simple. do you think in HN3 there will be more stackable objects or climbing utility for platforming. And will platforming be a key feature for the game?

I really hope so, haven’t heard anything on stealth in a while but I still believe it has the most potential when it comes to stealth in the franchise.

I think the best way to do it, is if you tap the button to open the door it opens all the way like currently, but if you hold down the button you can drag to open and pull the door allowing you to be sneaky and see what’s on the other side before you enter, would be great for stealth.

I don't think they even used this in the end for HN2, but it was eventually used in Nicky's Diaries.
The style of HN3 is definitely improving so far imo.
The props in prototype 2 look more stylized.
HN assets, except for the very old art style - which had hand-made LODs, have unfortunately always had bad LODs.
Because they rely on UE's automated ones and don't tweak the values.
HN1 full game LODs are some of the worst in the series

A lot of the meshes are 'smoother', like doors having bevels and such, while in HN2 a lot of things (particularly in the old style) had very rough edges.
Elena definitely incorporated a lot of detail in her assets, except for maybe the fridge as an example.

We've hardly seen any HN3 assets yet, and the ones we have seen are clearly placeholders.
It was kind of hit and miss, some models had an absurd amount of details (like this car), while others had rough edges, plain textures etc.
Though of course not all assets in that era were fully finished, but still.
HN2 Alpha 1.5's red wardrobe with blue sock textures are a good example of that.
This translates a bit to the HN2 full release as well, because there's a lot of props with low quality textures and barely any geometry.
I think the low quality textures are because of their tech artists going too far and making everything compressed as hell.
I still can't believe they kept Q & T at 1024.
Some of it yeah but others were just made this way
Hammer (first seen in that Theodore render where he has the rusty nail in his mouth) was made at at least 2048, and when it eventually became usable in Patch #9 it was at 512...
I hope they don't do anything as drastic as that for HN3.

HN2 got many updates because of bugs and stupid AI
Many of said updates introduced content that was made before the game even came out.
And in the end they barely managed to fix any of the AI issues, and introduced more of them as well.
If they don't rush HN3 they won't need to update it with content that was supposed to be there at launch.
I'm sure there'll be some bugs at launch, but hopefully they take time to polish it to the best of their ability before the game launches.
Tbf Europe is the general area the Team is working and living in, most things such as nature and locations are based off of things in that area even if in-game RB is in the Missouri.

this franchise has evolved much more, past the neighbor, to the point were he isnt even the main antagonist anymore, but still, having the word hello neighbor does make it more relevant, since people are bound to know its part of the franchise 🤷♂️

HN1 was called HN because of the Neighbor, HN2 was a sequel and now had multiple neighbors, HN3 is another sequel with more neighbors and while yes we aren’t living in RB we are there for the entire game, everyone we meet are pretty much neighbors in town to us and the other characters.

It's not that I don't want them or anything. There is no place we can integrate them as everything you experience happens procedurally. Of course our goal is to make characters a lively as possible, but everything you'll see ||(except first intro or something)|| will be in real time, without taking away your control. This is just how HN3 works.
There's one thing I was wondering
sometimes in HN1, I tend to just mess around with the environment to see what happens, even if it's without any real purpose

Hey Nikita, the other day I was talking about a feature that would be really cool. Basically, you can open and close doors normally with a tap of the interact key as usual, but if you hold down for a period of time, you can move the mouse the open the door

Ideally sneaking is possible and useful. But it's not like you forced to sneak. We changed approach to level design, so it works a bit different from what you saw in previous games.

Currently doors are physical (RBO-style). We have certain ideas on how to expand on it in the future. Your ideas are interesting! Opening door with mouse will break the pacing unfortunately as the game is somewhat snappy and dynamic. Thanks for the ideas, anyway!
