Cheater option: carry tinder and a pocket billows
Tough option: practice making and gathering material a lot

Getcha Sstuff. stack some sticks like a lil’ square fence with tinder in the middle. Light that 'er up. Strike your match, get that tinder burnin’ like your heart when you see my wife walk by, and just blow gently if it needs help. Once that kindlin’ catches, start feedin’ it bigger sticks, then finally your logs.Tend to that boy. Don’t just light it and walk off like a yellow-belly. Keep an eye on it, poke it now and then, and make sure it don’t go wild or burn out too quick just like my ex. That's what my pappy told me.

me and my friends just get a lot of dry grass then we put paper or a napkin below it then light it

#

and put small sticks and medium sticks above the dry grass

Feather sticking/shaving, making birdsnests from bark, getting birch bark, getting fat wood, etc

Pack some dryer lint and waterproof matches. If you don’t have those, magnifying glasses work too. Flint and steel work as well, but that’s much harder

Don’t carry like actual flint and steel though

#

Ferrocerium rod

#

Or just a friggin lighter

#

Put some duct tape around the lighter and when you go to light, roll up some pieces of the tape and light that

#

Works as tinder reasonably well

#

Also a magnifying glass only works under full sunlight - this is really an option for perfect conditions

Lots of tinder. Soft woods usually burn faster and hard woods burn slower. I like to use pine needles and tiny sticks to get a fire going. Reeds straw long grass make great tinder cattail heads as well. Keep a lighter in a zip lock bag. Cotton balls in vasloline or wax are great.

I pretty much always have firestarters with me

#

fires are fun to start from scratch but having a wax based firestarter on hand just makes things so easy'

#

super cheap to make or buy

#

from scratch though you'll want to start very small

#

starting with a bunch of piled wood/brush while on paper it'll work, it takes a while. Start with an empty pit and dry sticks. Have everything on standby and as you build up coals, add more stuff

#

I often start a big fire out with like a 2"x2" area of twigs

Pocket lint, go!
