I've been fishing a little bit the past 3 years or so. I've barely caught anything. 3 years ago, I caught like 2-3 rockbass the entire season, then last year I caught about a 1.5 LB smallmouth. Those pretty much consist of everything I've ever caught. Fishing has become very discouraging for me but I want to improve. Any tips to actually make a trip worth it? I fish a local river as it's the only water source I can get to. Some spots are pretty snaggy and most of it's moderate to high current. It's a somewhat large river.

Do you have anyone you know that fishes?
Fishing is one of those things that having someone with you even for one trip can help exponentially
Yeah. I’ve been in your shoes. I went about 2 years with nothing, not even a bite, then changed things up with my grandfather (a literal fishing god) and now I catch almost every trip. Try and find someone you know who fishes or find a group of people in your community to go with and I’m sure they’ll help you out
Also is the river shallow or deeper? If it’s shallow I’d recommend fishing for trout but if it’s deeper or slower you could try a ton of other things
I have beens fishing for 9ish yrs only recently have i stared to catch fish. It’s all in the bait/use of bait. Message me if you want more info
I am a lake fisherman
Unfortunately not. I wish I did.
I can help with lake/pond fishing
What did you change with your grandfather?
He just taught me new stuff
It's large, high current in most of it. A few small-medium water falls. It's through the side of my city. (Small ish city)
He started fishing with his grandpops i think
You have any lakes?
Congratulations @grand mesa on becoming a Member.
they can boost confidence
I've only started fishing on my own for the past few years as I've gotten older. My dad occasionally took me as a small kid. He doesn't do that anymore.
Gotchu
I see.
If there are random fishermen at your local spots talk to them
If it’s high current you might want to try fly fishing (only if you’re experienced). Look for inlets to the river and places the water might gather to form a calmer area and I’m sure there’ll be fish there
There's a conservation place nearby. About 6 KM. Funny enough, I went to get in yesterday but I forgot my money. My dad said he'd make up for that and take me today.
For inlets I would try a night crawlers and for the calm areas I would do a spinner or lure of any sort
I have been talking to a local who is the best crappie catcher ever (cought close to a state record last week)
I typically will. Say hello, have any luck yet, what bait they are using or what fish they will catch.
Just ask for the locals advice
Ask where the good spots are
I don't have any fly fishing gear. I only have very very basic stuff. I can pack all of my gear and have room in just my backpack.
For lakes trout are the best way to boost confidence
I hope to catch some trout or pike today.
Ok then don’t fly fish it won’t be worth it for the gear and knowledge
Use these for trout
I don't have any money or a job to afford stuff if I'm honest. I'm going to get a job over the summer. I'm still in school so I've got to prioritize that over a job.
I get 3-10 per day with this at my local lakes
Ah
I have some rip off power bait thing.
Yeah use power bait and artificial salmon eggs
These power eggs kill em
For trout only
Worth the $4-6
Cats will take em every so often
If I did have a job and my G2 or G license, I'd have a lot more fishing opportunities. I have to bike or walk to my spots. I also am very limited with my gear. Once in a while my parents may drive me, but thats mostly it.
Where can you get those?
Do you sink or bob them?
Sliding sinker with 3-5 foot leeder
Just above the weeds
How do you guys find people your age to fish with in your area? I don't know many people in general, let alone to fish with.
The cutbow in my pfp was caught on a sinking setup
Make friends with the locals
How so?
VERY valuable
100% find people in your area
Usually
They are happy to talk
Vast majority
They’ll talk unless you get too close to their spot or too nosy
I'm saying, how do you find those people. I specifically mean in the same age group. I don't think adults I see out fishing would want to be friends with me. I'm only in highschool. I don't know any other people in my school who fish.
Don’t ever get too close to their spot unless you’re going to talk
Im friends with a local 25-30 yr old fisherman
Ok.
Fisherman are very chill
I try not to be close to other people fishing. I don't want to cross lines, get in there way or whatever.
Smart
Also offer em worms if you have some
Whoevers there first should have priority over the spot within a good amount of space.
Fishers appreciate that
Ok.
Very true
If there is limited space just ask politely if you can join em
9 times out of 10 they will say ok
Trout like the middle
In rivers they like eddies
Like I mentioned earlier today I plan on going to a local pond/lake. It's all man made though. It is also stocked.
The middle should be fine
What’s in it?
This is what the website says, I've seen pictures/articles/reviews of people catching trout though.
If you have power bait eggs and sinkers you will catch trout
How do you rig those up?
It's a fairly large pond. It's like the borderline of pond and lake.
Put 3 of them on the spine of the hook
Ok.
Maybe
What about the sinkers then? What size hook?
#6 hooks
One second, let me get my bag and see what hooks I have.
Bread would work good here
Dont start with bass
They are hard to catch
Ok, I'm back.
My plan was trout or pike.
Good
All I have is 3 3/0 hooks.
Those long spines would work amazing for trout
Congratulations @agile wigeon on becoming a Member.
I'm going to be leaving in a bit I think. I'm at least going to start getting ready to go. I will have my computer open for a bit though.
Yep
Are you planning to go fishing at the lake you send the picture of above
The one with the list of fish
