I run Kali using VirtualBox. My host OS is Debian Linux. I have 12 GB of RAM and I think 8 processors. I use 2 procs and 2-4 GB of memory for Kali. Runs pretty good. Make sure in Vbox you drag the video memory up in the settings for the VM. I think 128 MB is max. this is where VMware shines. way more video memory. in the GBs. anyway. hmu if more questions.

it's also just generally good to have a dedicated VM instance for a given engagement so that any files, credentials you exfil and modifications you make to the system for the sake of that operations are isolated from your host filesystem (and any other VMs' filesystems), and so that you don't have to worry about changing configs too much because you're just going to throw it away at the end of day and spin up a fresh VM when you begin again.

CompTIA gets shit on but they're on the list of government recognized certs and they're widely known by HR. Sec+ and Net+ are good starts. If you want SOC specifically CySA+ but I recommend Sec+ for a foundation. They're cheap and study materials are all over the web.
