if we are solving htb labs diligently, learning from htb academy and revising and practicing content, analyzing deficiencies (for example ig we need some knowledge in areas like python programming etc - just a small example, I think along the way I am able to find areas where I need to put more effort into) and carefully planning and practicing in the weak areas...is that good enough...like do we still need to grind on other platforms like tryhackme, picoCTF etc ...????
also I think consistency matters a lot..
so my question is that would you recommend me (as a newbie at this stage) solving one retired machine per day for practice? or alternatively switch between labs on a day, academy on the other...or any other way..

I would recommend Academy. You need to learn the fundamentals of pentesting. Once you understand the fundamentals you can explore more advanced stuff. When I started doing boxes I found myself looking at writeups only to ask myself "how the hell would I know to do that?" Academy teaches a broad fundamental overview and shows you the methodology you need as a foundation. Then you can start working on more advanced stuff like learning programming etc.
It all depends on your goals. If you want to learn, just do the modules. If you want a cert, do the paths. Academy will give you strong foundational knowledge.

Highly recommend getting the theory down in academy first before attempting any of the labs, that being said once you do finish a module that has a very practical aspect I'd try to fit that into your methodology and attempt retired challenges or machines related to it.
