Hey, it depends on what you already know and how much time you plan to spend studying on HTB. But I think the general opinion is: if you're a complete noob and starting from zero, you can do all the Tier 0 stuff for free and then upgrade to Silver when you start feeling the need. Or, if you're sure you're going to keep going through the modules without giving up, you might as well pay anyway because you're always going to need cubes to unlock new modules. Just my opinion, of course.

also you now have a labs x academy thing which gives labs with similar things to what you learn in modules

so they work really well together

What I meant by that was to break on the boot menu, and edit the grub init param to exec bash or whichever terminal is available. Then you can check out the filesystem (logs etc) without bothering with booting from a usb or something. Imagine with an encrypted fs things may not be so simple.

As for the tty, once the VM has booted, or not, ctrl+alt+f1-f12 will switch tty. Handy when installing and something goes wrong, and will get you to a standard terminal login if your window manager is crapping out, so you can check logs

The closest I ever got to GRUB was when the nvidia driver stopped working on Zorin. I had to remove it, and then I was left with a completely black screen, after that, somehow I even managed to disable the wifi card (doint ask me how lol). It was a total adventure trying to fix Zorin, took me two days, but in the end I got it working again just to break again with sudo apt update
