I have a question. Can anyone please give me some advice on how I should approach HTB machines?

When I’m working on a machine from HTB, I’m not always sure how I should approach it properly. For example, let’s say I do some reconnaissance and discover that the machine is running Technology X version 1.2.3. After searching, I find a CVE for that version. I try the exploit, and it works.

Do you think I should do a deep dive into the technology and the CVE to fully understand it, or is it okay to just use the PoC and move on?

For example, if the CVE is related to the kernel itself, it can take a long time to fully understand why the vulnerability exists and how it works. It may even take days just to understand the technical details. Sometimes, there isn’t much detailed documentation available about the CVE. Also, some HTB machines use multiple CVEs, and in that case, it could take a very long time to fully understand every vulnerability involved.

I’m trying to improve my skills and become a better pentester, so I’d really appreciate your advice.
